Honestly, there is no secret, I watched everything in the chronological order that found on some website, in theory it is the correct order to be watched, but I don't think there are big differences from the release order, it is a bit similar to the Gundam formats.

Keep in mind that the Macross franchise has multiple timelines and parallel stories, so it's possible to watch different series and films independently. However, if you're interested in understanding the franchise as a whole, it might be helpful to start with the original series and then explore the other entries. I hope this helps.

Watch it in production order:

SDF -> Plus -> 7 -> Zero -> Frontier -> Delta

The movies are not compilations, they are alternate versions~

Macross is very easy to get into as compared to Gundam. :)

Going to mention @TheMechaManiac because he is better than me at recommending people into Macross~

The movies are different continuity from the TV show. it's best just to follow release order

TV series first, then the two movies, then the FB7 musical and the short film that was released with the Delta movie.

Novels I have read/am reading pending approval: since November 10 2022

Yeah, you probably won't understand a ton of things. It's full of references to older Macross works, mostly SDF and to a lesser extent 7.

Alternative versions: for the first episode, watch the Yakh! Deculture version - that's by far the longest cut of it as it unifies the previous Deculture and TV version scenes. Then just watch the endings to the latter two since they do differ.

The movies are a completely alternate retelling of the story so they are worth a watch. Just remember that with Macross the rule is most movies are always a retelling, not a compilation (Plus is the exception to this rule but it also has new scenes the OVA doesn't have).

Side material - as long as it's manga, not required reading. Not in the slightest. Macross is anime-original and anything you need to see is, in fact, anime. The "Ore no uta o kike!" movie is tied to the chronologically previous show, Macross 7, so if you really have to start now with Frontier, and decide to expand into the franchise - hold that one off until you watch 7.

Anyways, I think Macross is a package and SDF (yes the 1982 original) is the only true point where to start from. It's an iconic show for both the mecha genre as well as idol series (and remember this: Macross is strongest when it has good idols and good mecha scenes).

@TheMechaManiac
We meet again.... 🥀 Thank you for the reply in the previous macross discussion, I'm halfway through watching the Macross series.... ( I'm still watching M7 ) So this macross frontier is the same as SDF: TV ➡️ Alternative ending Movie ➡️ FB7 Musical ➡️ Short film Macross Frontier: Labyrinth of Time

Do you think this is the correct order?
Maybe I can skip watching FB7.....

@SakurakoMikage Yes, absolutely! All Macross shows except for Plus and 7 (which doesn't have a retelling but several short movies and Dynamite instead) follow this format. Hope I helped, it's not easy to get into well over 40 years of interconnected shows.
FB7 will depend if you like 7 and want just a neat call back from Frontier's time period - because believe me 7 does tie into Frontier quite a bit.
