Well, it's absolutely a story that can be adapted as live action. But for some reason they usually just can't help but change things when doing live action adaptations of things, so we'll see. I do know the director is pretty famous, though I haven't watched his films yet.

It's by the director of Shoplifters? That movie is amazing. This adaptation is gonna be good. How come Fujimoto gets the best people in the industry to work on his stuff.

sorry to be that guy but the odds of this being even remotely close to comparable is very unlikely

Wasn't interested until I saw Kore-eda's name. This man makes peak. Like Father, Like Son and Shoplifters are 2 of my favourite Japanese films

I’m a bit skeptical about this, because the manga is almost like an ode to art, and you can see that in the anime too. Idk how that’ll translate over to live action, unless they get creative with it.

Uhh I don't see why they're doing this, especially when the animated movie just came out.

But Kore-eda is a respected director, really enjoyed Shoplifters and Broker. Maybe he has an interesting adaptation in mind. The source material is probably too short for a feature-length movie anyway.

Yeah, most "adaptations" are essentially a spin off, I feel like anime is the only medium dedicated to actually adapting it's source material

Animation is literally the best medium that exists and people keep wanting to ruin everything by making live-action.

That being said, I'm definitely curious about this one because of the director. I've only seen Our Little Sister, but it's beautiful, maybe it will be a good movie.

Edit: it's still not on Letterboxd, I want to add it to my watchlist 💔

@Ronninn Exactly. Anime are 99% of the time fully faithful to the source material and it's rightfully taken for granted, with the rare exceptions (like original endings and such) being highly infamous. But then you look at live action and pretty much every time it feels like they're changing stuff for the fun of it, and you wonder why they don't just make a faithful, good adaptation of a good source material. Like, I've recently watched the Pancreas live action movie and all the original stuff feels just so wildly out of place, I don't understand why they bothered to add it.

All that said though, this might be one case where some original content might actually be the right choice, if not inevitable considering the short length of the original. The director is good and it is definitely possible to make it a bit different while keeping the core intact. And considering that the anime adaptation of Look Back is simply perfect already, we'll always have a great adaptation no matter how things go with this movie.

Kore-eda is a colossus. This is definitely gonna be good. I hope more people find out about Look Back and Fujimoto's other works through this live action.

Very curious how the art direction will translate in the live action…the director seems to have really good works so perhaps I’ll check out his stuff in the meantime.

One of these rare ones that could actually succeed, in terms of enhancing/adapting an Anime-story, without looking too goofy.
