Idk why but the idea of Sugimoto getting involved in some arranged marriage is funny.

I like the change of scenery since Aspira's kidnapping though. Also, about time we got to see some food on the table again. It's been awhile since the previous seasons.

Sugimoto with a buzzcut, really suits him, a lot.

I felt perfection Kaeko Kaneko, the beauty, the voice, the wackiness.

No surprise Sugimoto is fond of Kikuta. Them as a duo is fantastic.

Everyone is connected.

I was waiting for this arc to be adapted! Definitely needed a breather from the previous episodes, it's just funny to me that Sugimoto met every relevant character in the show without knowing it. Finally, more Yuusaku content. I also love how they protrayed Kaeko, she's so funny.

I like that they didn't cram all the chapters into one episode. Looks like next week's episode will be a mix of lighthearted and serious.

Sugimoto hums Singin' in the Rain which was published in 1929, not 1901, but it's a song that fit perfectly with his character.

Unexpected kind of backstory episode this time. Guess neither Sugimoto or Tsurumis group remembered each other the way they never mentioned it up till now.

Surprised how much Kikuta is involved with the Hanazawa family, wonder if he'll find out they murdered the dad too.Cant say ive got a good feeling for the girls fate.

Also did Yuusaku got lost seeing how Tsurumi got there first before he did lol

Flashback this time around and a breather from the earlier episodes with the Tokyo Love Story arc. I'm pretty sure the song Sugimoto was humming came after 1901 but I'm not too sure. It might be a bit anachronistic but it's fine, the content from the episode was typical Golden Kamuy wackiness with the virginity protection storyline for Yuusaku Hanazawa (played by Sugimoto in this time) and it works. The pacing was actually better than I expected for this by not having this all done in 1 episode, but I am curious about whether the season will have enough time to finish the whole adaptation while maintaining a respectable sense of pace. I sure hope so. Also there was a bit shown with the girl that was shown from Tsukihima's story earlier on being in Tokyo which is a nice little add. That girl Kaeko was in a famine with how thirsty she acted to get 'Yuusaku' till the end of the episode there. Wouldn't say this was the best the season offered but it was a change of pace and still managed to entertain.

Funny arc, but it's so weird that the author shoved that in here, especially as things got intense and was entering the final stretch.

Also, Ogata has seen Sugimoto before, then. Just dressed up as Yuusaku. Or maybe the meeting was so quick and outrageous that he ended up never making the connection?

Manga readers.... do ya'll feel like the math ain't mathin? Like 5 more episodes and thats it? Is it getting a part 2 or a movie that I don't know about. It just seems like 5 isn't enough episodes to really finish it properly

Don't know why but this episode felt really out of place after the insane last few episodes. I don't mind the episode itself, it's just the emotional whiplash in tone lol

@A_Ghost_Queen agreed, i've been thinking of this all season too
after this episode there's 36 chapters, which is crazy for 5 episodes. i really hope they follow this season up with a movie :/

This episode pretty much cemented the theory of the story not ending with episode 13 this season. With how much love and care they have put into this season so far, and with today's ep adapting only 3 chapters (which is the lowest amount any episode has adapted in a very long time), it's just not believable they are gonna cram the remaining 36 chapters into only 5 episodes, even if they were gonna rush things they would have done so before the finale.

Nice episode btw. Probably the weakest this season while still being very enjoyable and making Kikuta a better character. But I would have preferred some more progress on the main plot seeing as we just had a flashback sequence about Wilk already

This flashback story was very amusing with how Kikuta helped out Sugimoto. It also felt fitting that Sugimoto starts off this episode singing along happily before getting into a slugfest fight after the OP credits ended! XD

Kaneko seems to be a nice girl, although even here, the crudeness of the jokes that this series is infamous for always makes me laugh out loud, especially how she wanted to see him naked.

Another thing of note was that the pacing for this episode was slower than normal, which made it all the more enjoyable for what was shown here. Having said that, while I haven't read the manga, I can understand as to why the manga readers are worried about how the pacing for the remaining five episodes will play out. It does make me wonder if there will be a continuation of some sort afterwards or if the final episode will be an extended one at that. Heck, it might be neither.

All we can do is wait and see what will happen in the near future of how the series will be wrapped up.

So we finally get to see the origins of Sugimoto’s relationship with Kikuta, it is a bit odd we’re veering off from the main plot when we’re so close to the end but I don’t mind it, I’ll take my Golden Kamuy whether we’re hunting for gold or protecting virginity lol. So Sugimoto got roped into this scheme by Kikuta to keep Ogata’s half-brother Yuusaku from getting married to this girl named Kaeko so he can keep his flag-barer position in the army, and Kaeko going after Yuusaku was instigated by his own mom because she knows the horrors of war after working as a nurse, quite the convoluted situation but it made for some fun moments, like Sugimoto’s looks having an effect on Kaeko so she became extra thirsty lol.

And in the process we got a bit more of Sugimoto’s backstory with his old friend and past fiancé, Kikuta spoke some wisdom in response to that, although he took it too seriously at first lol. And I like the way Sugimoto is taking the situation with Yuusaku, he could simply do as he is told but he’s actually concerned about how Yuusaku feels in all of this, I respect that a lot. And wow so Sugimoto met some of his future enemies back in this time too, just casually ran into Tsurumi, Ogata, Tsukishima and Usami lol (RIP once again), if only they knew what awaited them in that moment. And we ended on quite the scene with Sugimoto busting out of the bathroom butt ass naked to save Kaeko, somehow he still seemed cool despite that lol, I guess that’s just how Sugimoto is.

And it’s interesting to hear what manga readers are saying about how many chapters are left to adapt, personally I hope it’s not a movie finale because I think that kills the hype, so I’m hoping for a long final episode instead.

While I expected that the arc would end mid-episode, I didn't expect that it would do that next week rather than now. They're marketing this mini-arc fairly aggressively rn (they released a whole episode trailer and key visual), and the drawings did look really good. But animation-wise, this was probably one of the worst animated episodes in the entire franchise: it felt like the recent Lightning bandit OVA that had a similar amount of uncharacteristically still frames. This is a shame, as both mentioned arcs are pretty good. Hoping for the next episodes to pick up again.

🎯 Truth Score : 8.4/10 ⭐⭐⭐⭐🌑 (Very Good)

🇺🇸 A solid and controlled episode that maintains the series’ quality but never truly elevates the experience.
Life's too short for mid anime/manga. Don't like it? Drop it.

Assuming my math is correct, if the pace of around 4 chapters per episode keeps up, we’ll be right chapter 297 (of 314) by episode 13, which is around the point where the final arc moves to the train.

There haven’t been any rumors or hints to another season/movie being made, but I just don’t see how it’s possible to condense the last 37 chapters into five episodes (when we’ve only covered 33 in the past eight). I could definitely see the second half of the Hakodate arc made into a movie. But again, no confirmation.

@amararose they've been doing 4-7 chapters per episode, with as breakneck as the last few chapters are it will probably work out. There definitely isnt enough material left to adapt into a movie

@billybub I disagree.
Right now we've covered around 32 chapters in 8 episodes. Assuming the pace keeps like that we get to like chapter 297.
That would be 17 chapters left.
4 chapters per 20 minute anime episode means, 17 chapters can be adapted into a 1 hour 20 minute movie. I guess it will be padded a bit and end up with a 90 minute movie.
I'm not reading any replies or comments directed at me at all. I know my truth and if you disagree: that's fine but i couldn't give a damn about :)

Did we ever get an explanation for why Sugimoto is so strong? Even with starvation and everything else, he's a beast. I don't think he can beat trained soldiers yet but I guess we will find out next week.

I didn't think we would be dealing with Ruroni Kenshin Boshin war content.

Thought this will be OVA

@sukisan1 finished the manga like last year, I assumed that final arc might fit like 6 episode quota but this mini arc being a regular instead OVA means it might need some extra engineering in final episode like a one hour special, a movie for final episode feels too much to complete ecerything

Another great episode, but as a manga reader I echo the concern regarding how they're gonna fit everything left into a mere 5 more episodes. I've actually been worried about that the last few episodes tbh. Golden Kamuy doesn't deserve a rushed ending of any sort. But I guess we'll see...

Man, I didn't expect Sugimoto and Kikuta's dynamic to be this good. Such a shame we had to wait till this final season to witness it.

Amusing episode overall. Not sure why we are getting this apparently inconsequential backstory this late into the show but hey, I won't complain. Still had tons of fun watching it.
