Methode is such a soothing character. Love her.

@fantaghost

i mean, its just supposed to be funny. It did not work for me but it also does not bother me.
I was more bothered by the nosedive in animation quality in this episode, the ton of far angle wideshots with no details in the faces at all.
Like there are 3 shots where Genau/Methode literally have no face, that just looked cheap as hell.
In Season 1 characters in such wide shots had fully detailed faces so this was very noticeable.
@Ogami1978

The animation itself was fine but the blank faces really threw me off and broke the immersion. As you said, in S1 that didn't happen so I'm a little disappointed. Still a great episode overall, maybe even my favorite.

Decent episode, albeit a sad one. The baker's son was so terrified he trembled in fear of the demons. Rest in peace to the blond baker's son, Genau's childhood friend. I hope Frieren's party and Serie's party treat the demons PRECISELY as they treated the hometown of Genau and the baker's son.

That aside, I do have one question. How precisely did the letter go not just from the pigeon to Frieren, but from the pigeon to the rabbit and then to Frieren? I ain't ignorant or illiterate, I know how pigeon messaging works, but a rabbit? How did it pass from pigeon to rabbit to Frieren? What the eff?
@Skuvan

I am pretty sure the implication is that the message with the bird was send to the Nord company, they then asked the Continental Magic Association for help who in turn send out messages to first class mages in the vicinity, in this case Genau and Methode and also Fern.

What a great setup episode for the next big demon fight. On that note it was terrible to hear that for some reason demons also kill when they're not hungry.

Regarding Genau, it was interesting to hear Frieren mention that his spells have bloodlust to them and I think its because his village was decimated but I hope that doesn't lead to him making irrational decisions when they confront the demon boss.

On a lighter note, haha jealous/overprotective Fern. I swear that every time someone compliments Frieren she pouts and it doesn't matter if it's a guy or girl:

Absolute Cinema incoming

Frieren or anyone killing demons is so satisfying. Every single one of those deserves nothing short of death. And the series never fails to show how brutal demons are.
Genau is owed a revenge.

Methode turing into Mama Creek lmao😭😭
Fern pouting when she called Frieren cute and smol😭😭

Bread/brick eating is so peak.

This was a fine, slightly mixed-bag episode. I liked the more serious tone this one had with being the start to this short arc and figuring out the mystery of the demon that took down everyone at the village, and how to fight it. Was nice seeing Methode again after a little while too. While it was mostly decent, it did feel glacially slow. Like not much really happening there to note of. It is just the start of the arc, and this is a 5-6 chapter arc with 5 episodes to work with so I can understand this episode eeling a bit slower since the action scenes can account for more time taken in the upcoming episodes. But it did show a bit of struggle with this week in my opinion. Little more could be shown to the process of the letter being delivered beyond just the end. Still a decent enough episode for the most part.

@Ander6on I laughed at the crunch of Genau's bread at the end of the episode.

Oh you are right! I confused him with Richter and I don't even know why. Maybe they look similar and I was lost. :D
@FrozenRaider They definitely do look somewhat similar, but honestly I think Genau needs screen time anyways since he barely got any personal character development during S1.

A formidable new enemy is emerging for Frieren's group. It will be interesting to see the upcoming fight with him.

Beyond that, it's a shame for the villagers. Although I haven't seen the child's corpse from the beginning... I don't know if that's a good or bad thing.

Oh, and I loved the messenger squirrel, haha.

@Doc69 Genau lost his home village and all the people he knew there, and you say nothing important is happening? Okay, guess character development isn't important.

Methode mommy is bacccc,

Fern got jealous again. lmaooo

and here,

the one with better mana concealment is Fern right?

it's difficult to tell who's who because Frieren appeared out of the direction the of the silhouette where the better mana concealment was from.

i was like dual sword style? huh Zoro does better... then quad sword style mentioned.
FAAAAAAA

and Frieren mentioned that the captain was far stronger than stark. if she's actually scaling starks strength and not like stark himself that demon is lot of trouble.

feel bad for Genou tho

@ultramb It's 5v1, the enemy may have 4 arms but combined we have 10!

We finally have a new episode of Frieren after a 1 week break! I missed my Friday dose of Frieren :(

This episode was much darker than usual for Frieren, since it starts with the POV of a villager that was hiding from the Demon's attack, which later we know was (kind of) a childhood friend of Genau, which just adds more to this beginning part of the episode. The first seconds of this episode really show the brutallity of Demons, killing humans left and right. Later in the episode we find Genau killing those demons, that ask for mercy, since they have a "son", which once again reinforces the idea that Frieren said countless times: Demons are monsters with the abillity to talk, and they'll use these "secret words" to gain compassion from humans. As expected, there was no son there, especially considering that Demons don't raise their offspring, so it wouldn't matter anyway.
Frieren is showing once again why it's a show with such an amazing narrative. After that, we see Genau finding a sole survivor, that ends up bringing to the church. What was interesting was this villager knew Genau (later revealed they knew each other from when they were kids), and asks him what happened to the villagers, to which Genau says that they're safe. At first, this scene made me wonder why Genau lied, or rather, why this villager was asking this, since he clearly saw the other villagers getting killed. But by the end of the episode, with Genau's talk with Stark, this question makes much more sense, since Genau wasn't saying that the villagers were safe, in the way that they are alive, but rather that their bodies are safe, and weren't destroyed or eaten by the demons, and this was what this villager wanted to know. The way we can see the villager's hand lose its grip after hearing Genau's answer was such a subtle way of showing that the villager was able to move on to the afterlife after knowing the bodies of the other villagers (and his own) would be safe. After that we see Genau continuosly talking to the villager, even when there was clear signs he was carrying a lifeless corpse, especially when he says he doesn't mind not getting to eat fresh bread, he just wants to eat his experimental bread, like the old times... I found this scene especially emotional and really well executed, especially because it adds a lot of depth to Genau's character, which we have seen in the 1st season as a rather cold person, and in this episode he clearly states he has almost no bond with this village, yet, we can see him mourn the destruction of the village throughout the episode.
Cutting this scene to Methode praying for the other villagers that died in that attack was also one of the most impactful scenes of the episode, showing perfectly the aftermath of the Demon's actions.

I feel like this one of the best narrative moments of the season so far, and my favorite part of the episode. Seeing Stark, Fern and Frieren together with Methode and Genau is also really cool, and I'm especially surprised by the amount of dialogue we got between Stark and Genau. Also, it's great to see Methode again! Her character wasn't that explored during the 1st class mage exam arc, so I'm interested in knowing her character better. Also, it seems we have a really exciting arc to come, with a lot of fighting, considering this demon is a quadruple-wielder, and is really strong. Frieren's arcs are always really good when they happen, so I'm really excited for this one!

I also have to say there's nothing like watching Frieren to cheer up a thougher day like today was, and that for itself is enough reason to praise this episode even more.
I'm certainly not ready to say goodbye to my weekly dose of Frieren in 4 weeks... Can't believe we only have 4 more episodes left.

To end this post, here's a screenshot of one of the most impactful moments of this episode:

The Method is simply adorable, but overall the episode is quite sad, especially the beginning. The only question is about bread. It's understandable when they were traveling, but in a small village this problem could probably have been solved, although maybe there is some obstacles.

Oh for God sake...
The episode has an intriguing intro, there's a demon battle, attacking a village. Pretty brutal fighting, some of the monsters looked ridiculous but I can forgive that.

What I can't forgive is everything that followed the intro.
So there's a priest guy I suppose a first class mage named Genau with a deadpan voice who kills the last demon and finds his best friend's body. His blank face and deadpan demeanor is a clear character trait- but in an anime with so many characters who already have mostly blank expressions and deadpan speech- it makes the following 20 minutes a chore to get through. They stand around and talk
And talk
And talk

At one point they're munching on stale bread. Talking. There's a lot of expository dialogue about every little detail of what makes this demon attack different etc... an entire episode wasted on muttering about what comes next... and what was the big reveal, what did AN ENTIRE 23 MINUTE EPISODE spend all of its budget to give to us- it's some famous demon with four fucking blades. Oh no! (He's not here now, but maybe next episode we'll see him)
ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!!
How can you people deal with the pacing in this show? It's painful. Any other anime that dared to be this flat and boring would just be tossed in the bin. But everything I watched today is "absolute peak"
Peak boring is what it was. Fucking hell. I was impressed for the first couple minutes- things are about to get real. Then Frieren does what Frieren always does- suck all the life out of itself, followed by the pretentious closer with computer animation made to look like colored pencils which it is not.

Calm ep

Nice AO scene to start off the ep and show us how Genau's hometown was destroyed before he got there.

LMAO, these demons dumb asf.

RIP to Genau's homeboy.

Good lord, Frieren always ready to get active. Even on Genau who's litereally moving like a demon internally, despite being a human with such a cold demeanor.

Methode's fine ahh is back. Ngl, I thought her outfit would be black, but perhaps that was silly thinking.

Eating them brick breads, again. Frieren and the gang are THAT poor. 😭

We got four-arms as a demon. This will be quite fun.

This ep adapted ch 71 and 1/2 of 72.

glad to see another get together for a side quest

also they made alot of effort to cover frames on the introduction that could hint the enemy 4 arms so i actually went back and theres only a SINGLE frame at 01:12 that suggest said composition. Def a big fish, one of the sages of destruction for sure.

Cause this episode barely covered one whole chapter lmao. It’s almost akin to One Piece anime pacing, even. Not that it’s a bad thing since it added even more anime original content that brought more value to the arc being covered. For example, the opening scene with the village being ransacked by demons was barely much of a single panel in the manga and that was more so a narrated flashback in that case iirc.
