We finally have a new episode of Frieren after a 1 week break! I missed my Friday dose of Frieren :(
This episode was much darker than usual for Frieren, since it starts with the POV of a villager that was hiding from the Demon's attack, which later we know was (kind of) a childhood friend of Genau, which just adds more to this beginning part of the episode. The first seconds of this episode really show the brutallity of Demons, killing humans left and right. Later in the episode we find Genau killing those demons, that ask for mercy, since they have a "son", which once again reinforces the idea that Frieren said countless times: Demons are monsters with the abillity to talk, and they'll use these "secret words" to gain compassion from humans. As expected, there was no son there, especially considering that Demons don't raise their offspring, so it wouldn't matter anyway.
Frieren is showing once again why it's a show with such an amazing narrative. After that, we see Genau finding a sole survivor, that ends up bringing to the church. What was interesting was this villager knew Genau (later revealed they knew each other from when they were kids), and asks him what happened to the villagers, to which Genau says that they're safe. At first, this scene made me wonder why Genau lied, or rather, why this villager was asking this, since he clearly saw the other villagers getting killed. But by the end of the episode, with Genau's talk with Stark, this question makes much more sense, since Genau wasn't saying that the villagers were safe, in the way that they are alive, but rather that their bodies are safe, and weren't destroyed or eaten by the demons, and this was what this villager wanted to know. The way we can see the villager's hand lose its grip after hearing Genau's answer was such a subtle way of showing that the villager was able to move on to the afterlife after knowing the bodies of the other villagers (and his own) would be safe. After that we see Genau continuosly talking to the villager, even when there was clear signs he was carrying a lifeless corpse, especially when he says he doesn't mind not getting to eat fresh bread, he just wants to eat his experimental bread, like the old times... I found this scene especially emotional and really well executed, especially because it adds a lot of depth to Genau's character, which we have seen in the 1st season as a rather cold person, and in this episode he clearly states he has almost no bond with this village, yet, we can see him mourn the destruction of the village throughout the episode.
Cutting this scene to Methode praying for the other villagers that died in that attack was also one of the most impactful scenes of the episode, showing perfectly the aftermath of the Demon's actions.
I feel like this one of the best narrative moments of the season so far, and my favorite part of the episode. Seeing Stark, Fern and Frieren together with Methode and Genau is also really cool, and I'm especially surprised by the amount of dialogue we got between Stark and Genau. Also, it's great to see Methode again! Her character wasn't that explored during the 1st class mage exam arc, so I'm interested in knowing her character better. Also, it seems we have a really exciting arc to come, with a lot of fighting, considering this demon is a quadruple-wielder, and is really strong. Frieren's arcs are always really good when they happen, so I'm really excited for this one!
I also have to say there's nothing like watching Frieren to cheer up a thougher day like today was, and that for itself is enough reason to praise this episode even more.
I'm certainly not ready to say goodbye to my weekly dose of Frieren in 4 weeks... Can't believe we only have 4 more episodes left.
To end this post, here's a screenshot of one of the most impactful moments of this episode:
