Ok, whats are your theories on what location of Haibane Renmei is?
After at a few viewings of the series, I started to think in one sense the hb world might take place in some type of purgatory world where those who died under dire circumstances early in life are given a chance to sort out their sin or lives a little bit longer before being allowed to pass to next life, be it the afterlife or being born again.
For example:
- Day of flight and that every Haibane seems to look forward to it with mixed feelings.
- the wings and the colorings of the feathers.
- what each Haibane of remeber of their 'dreams' for which each of them are named for.
- walled city with only gate that only a select few are allowed to come and go.
- The trying to destroy of one's blackening sin alone only leading to more heartbreak until someone else steps in to help.
- the fact that every Haibane seems to be of the age of a teenager or younger when they came out of thier cocoons.

The series to me is the first anime to get me to think about my life and everything that I've been through and affects on others. Haibane Renmei is always on the top of list of Anime recommandations to people. It's story stays with you.
Plus, in some respects I can relate to Reki.
"When does a man die? Is it when he's shot in the heart with a pistol? No. When he's stricken with a deadly disease? No. When he eats soup made from a deadly mushroom? NO! It's when he is forgotten!!!" Dr. Hiriluk (One Piece)

I've heard a theory that the town is kind of an alternate universe sort of Garden of Eden. This doesn't explain everything, though. Or maybe it's a purgatory for the Haibane just set in an ordinary town. The Haibane showing up just changed the rules a little. I mean, the non-Haibane seem perfectly normal.

Well at first thought it seems like limbo, right? ABe has denied this however. I'm more inclined to say either that it's a stage between lives in which the Haibane must come to terms with and understand why their previous life ended and be at peace with the conclusion to continue to their next...

Or, that the Haibane have been taken "out of time" and still have a chance to return to their old lives and make a different decision which stops their previous life from ending. Either would mean them leaving Old Home.

These interesting mysteries, the thoughtful, slow paced nature of the show and the deep characters are why I love Haibane Renmei.

Whatever Abe said, Haibane should not be reduced to one single interpretation. The limbo theory fits well, even if that conception is likely to be more appealing to Americans or Europeans than to Japanese as Christianity is not the foundation of their civilization.
But there is another interpretation that is probably the one Abe had in mind, haibane renmei might be an adaptation of Murakami Haruki's novel, "Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World". In this novel, the narrator appears in a town he can't leave. The only creatures that can go in and out are unicorns (crows in haibane). I will not reveal the entire plot, but if you read it you will see many similarities.

I'm not so into making concrete theories about Haibane Renmei, such things have been discussed elsewhere and I don't feel like repeating what others have said. It's more that I have a feeling about it, a sense about the story.

It reminds me of the novel by Lois Lowry, The Giver. Although their plots and ultimate messages are markedly different, they both take place in idyllic communities surrounded by an air of mystery and unexplained rules. They both deal with the importance of memories, and the journey to discover self and one's purpose in relation to the world around them.

That's really the best extent to which I can describe my personal interpretation. The beauty of Haibane Renmei is that it is art; there are multiple legitimate meanings to its story elements and symbols, and each one is deeply personal to different individuals.
