Aurelius Lazard Lazard had arrived at the location described at the missions counter. Of course it was only a very vague information, something along the lines of: "The ruins are somewhere to the north Hohenheim. Go to the rendezvous-point and meet up with you partner." "What very reliable information. It resembles finding a snowflake amongst many others at the top of a mountain, while receiving help from an unknown spirit." Lazard just loved saying things like that. They were part of his personality. Still, he needed to wait for his partner to arrive. Given the location he is at, his partner should be able to spot him immediately, as Lazard was now standing before a vast desert... "Of course, old ruins just had to be in deserts. It is like their natural home." Chanting an spell, Lazard proceeded to at least fend off this unimaginable heat. "Coryza Velarium." Upon saying this, Lazard was slowly being enveloped in a blue aura, giving off a slight chill. "This is better. Now I just need to wait for my partner, before venturing off into this grueling desert."

Youko had no trouble finding the meeting location. When she was younger she had no clue where she was going and couldn’t navigate at all but with experience everything changes. The meeting place was hardly exciting as the closer Youko got the more barren the landscape became. The good news was there was absolutely no one around so she didn’t have to worry about her magic being seen. As soon as she got close to the rendezvous point see could see a figure waiting in the distance. She wasn’t as naïve to assume that she was his partner but she had guessed it would most likely be the case. After crossing the final few hundred metre Youko was now only a few metres from a Halfling she recognised from the scarlet headquarters. Given her approach he should have been able to see her coming from quite some distance and if he had taken notice of her at the headquarters would have come to the same conclusion as her. “So I assume we are to be partners then?” Youko asked politely leaving the details at that. She had hoped he would confirm that and at least mention the mission name to so he clarified things. Probably an unneeded precaution but it was simply in her nature.

Aurelius Lazard It was not long after he had arrived here, someone spoke to him. Turning back, Lazard saw that it was the fox-girl from before, although since his "Conspectum Magicis" was not casted on him, she looked just like very young girl. "Partners? And who might you be little girl? You certainly look to young to be a mercernary, but given that you are the only one to arrive here, I assume we are." After a brief pause Lazard continued speaking. "May I introduce myself. My name is Lazard Aurelius and it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance." As usual, Lazard gave his polite introduction and rounded it off with a smile, awaiting the response of the young girl.

From his response it appeared he hadn’t recognised her from the headquarters. Of course he might just be feigning ignorance but she doubted it was case. What was more interesting was the rest of what he said. He claimed she looked too young to be a mercenary, which showed he had assumed a great deal about her just from her appearance. It was such loosely based assumptions that led to disaster more often than not. She had thought similar possibilities when she had first seen him but hadn’t stereotyped him because of it. For all she knew he could be thousands of years old and have skills beyond her imagination. Due to his ignorant comment she doubted it was the case but she wouldn’t rule it out. After all he could be trying to fool her. Most wouldn’t think the same way as Youko did. She was aware of how she operated and suspected everyone else of doing the same. This was probably the reason why she had travelled alone for so many years not being able to find anyone she truly trusted. After the mistakes she made when she was still a teenager she would not be easily fooled. The rest of what he had to say was simply confirming the fact both of them were to be partners followed by an introduction. She had hoped he’d said a little more but she could still force him to do so. Again, it was a trust thing as seeing him at the scarlet headquarters wasn’t enough to confirm for her they were partners. For now she’d have to play the part though. She had allowed herself to flow naturally from her cautious question before into a more open one. It was as if the response he gave was enough to make her comfortable with the pairing. “Don’t make fun of my age, I’m more than capable.” She answered with a big, confident and almost childish smile, “It is my first mission so you might have to help me out a little, hehe.” She regressed a little after admitting the fact. Technically, not a lie but he was most likely to assume that as she had no experience. “Oh, and my name in Youko, Lazzy-chan, and I’m a swordsman.” She added proudly, “I also know a little magic and to top it off I’m amazingly beautiful. What can you do Lazzy-chan??” It would important to know what each other could do and he had no weapon but seemed to carry around books. Was he some kind of spell caster? He would probably answer that question for her.

Aurelius Lazard "Lazzy-chan? You seem to have quite an unique sense for naming people. As for what I can do... well just see for yourself..." Lazard spoke with a smile. He would show the locations of the ruins to her... After all, before she came here, Lazard had been pondering in thought why a desert was here. Instead there could have been some old castle or something like that, but that was not the case or was it? He knew there was something behind this. And after he had casted his "Conspectum Magicis", he had already realized there was something wrong... "A very interesting safety measure indeed... We are currently not in a desert, but merely an illlusion probably to keep strangers from entering the ruins. They are right in front of us." Upon releasing his magical sight and his "Coryza Velarium", Lazard prepared to draw a large magic circle on the ground. Aligning it to the element of water, the circle gained a blue colour while Lazard infused it with some of his energy. "Dispell" was the magick he was trying to cast. It would only temporary dissolve the desert illusion, but it would last long enough. Right after he had finished the circle, it began to glow and produced fast magical waves reaching across the barren wasteland, revealing an interesting location... and only one moment later, the ruins were standing before him. ![]() Truly they were just as beautiful as Lazard had hoped them to be and would the girl think the same way? "Welcome to the ruins Youko. A marvelous revelation intended to satisfy the living being by its utmost beauty... Now that we have found it, shall we go in?"

As she had requested he began to reveal his magic to her. It was enough to really tell what kind of magic he used as dispelling illusions or perhaps creating them didn’t give her enough knowledge. She couldn’t tell if his words were meant to mislead her as to what he was actually doing as well so it could very well have nothing to do with illusions as well. As she’d be unlikely to let people actually learn what her magic actually was she expected other mages to do the same. A noteworthy thing was his apparent need to use circles to cast magic. Whether he actually required them or not if he continued to cast in such a way he wouldn’t be suited for close combat. This left the job of taking the lead to her. Of course if he thought differently she wouldn’t interfere as it would surely be easier to let him do all the difficult things for her. After all she had hoped her character was somewhat endearing and he wouldn’t be able to leave her alone. As for the mention he made of the ruins and the whole reveal it had suited exactly what he wanted to hear from him. With that and the fact she had seen him at headquarters it was almost a sure thing he was her partner. Of course she still had the usual doubt in her mind but it was more than enough to proceed with the mission. Still playing her character she decided to appear to act before thinking which would allow her to take the lead. Her eyes lit up with wonder as the ruins were reveal to her and it was visible how much she wanted to go to them. Almost in awe she remained quiet until Lazard had finished his explanation. As if his final words were a starting gun she immediately responded by dashing towards the first set of stairs. She had observed the situation in the time she had been in ‘awe’ and recognised nothing that suggested any traps. It wasn’t that it was impossible that there was any, but it was unlikely. Youko was quite nimble and had herself 100% prepared before dashing in though it definitely didn’t appear that way. After reaching the stairs she swirled around energetically and called out, “Hurry up Lazzy-chan, it’s time for an adventure.” She was sure the ruins had many things to look out for and she definitely wouldn’t take them lightly. If it wasn’t for all her experience over the years she wouldn’t dare try to keep up a false persona but she was confident she could keep herself safe while her persona appeared to be lucky and amazingly powerful. After all she could show him and whatever else appeared whatever she wanted them to see so why not make it amazing.

Aurelius Lazard "Haha. No need to be in such a rush. We can take this slow." The girl's energetic self made Lazard laugh. She seemed just like a child and it piqued his interest, why she would be a mercenary. Well, it would not be very long until he will see her capabilities... Following the girl at his own pace, Lazard took his time to look at these beautiful ruins. There ought to be a hidden library there with many unknown books that are yet to be discovered. This would surely be an interesting adventure...

With the reports on the ruins and the initial illusion Lazard had dispelled Youko knew there was something more going on with these ruins then what was originally mentioned. The report had suggested it was haunted and overrun with monsters but yet now it had a magical shielding to prevent people from entering. All of that had to be to protect something and the magic suggested there was some sentient force at work. Perhaps the 6000 gold pieces the job payed was not because of the lord affluence and actually the difficult of the job. It was a troubling thought but until she saw further evidence she wouldn’t assume to be the case and if the reports were true they wouldn’t have to wait long before finding out. In her act she impatiently waited for Lazard to catch up. He also called out they could take things easy. A little relaxed given the situation Youko thought but it was perhaps caused by her appearance. She didn’t seem in the slightest bit focused and it might have infected him as well. With her leading it shouldn’t be too much of a problem. He didn’t show any signs that suggested he was corrupt so she at least try to keep him alive. As soon as he caught up she was off again skipping up a few steps only to turn and wait from him again. “Aww, but being slow is no fun.” She said waiting for him before skipping ahead a few more steps. So far there was little to worry about, but with her inhuman hearing she heard something in the distance, a rattling sound, and her inhuman sense of smell picked up the smell of rotting meat. There was definitely some danger ahead but there was no way for her human act to know as she appeared to be gleefully skipping up the stairs. After the same process had been repeated a few more times she neared the top of the stairs. There was little to see as but by now even her companion should be able to hear the rattling and maybe even the smell though it wasn’t particularly strong. It appeared they would meet with whatever laid ahead of them before even reaching the entrance to ruins. Youko had predicted as much for a while but had wondered how her partner would react. After all in her act she had no intention of stopping. “Ah, I can hear something coming, friends? Playthings?” She said excitedly, “Let’s hurry up and meet them.” She dashed ahead to reach to the top of the staircase and the opening of the ruins. She stopped for only a second observing the new location which was likely to be a battleground before beginning with her magic as she left her illusion of herself in place while she slipped away to the side under a cloak of invisibility. A better explanation was she made an illusion of herself and hid herself in an illusion. This would be how she intended to begin her assault. Out of the darkness of the ruins the enemies she had anticipated started to reveal themselves. They were feral (undead). From her previous observations it wasn’t much of a surprise since it wasn’t her first time fighting these things. They were simple minded which was the best kind of mind for her illusions. They wouldn’t even question the most ridiculous of illusions but she still had to keep her partner fooled. “Plaything!” Youko’s illusionary self exclaimed. Without waiting another second she began her assault as both her and her illusion drew their weapons. Her illusion charged into the first of the enemies and slashed downwards across its body. Normal the attack would have just gone through the undead’s body without any effect but she had followed up the illusionary strike with one of her own finishing the first of many enemies. The retaliation on Youko’s illusion was low as those nearby tried to lash out but failed the reach their target as the illusion jumped back. The whole purpose of using the illusion was to test the enemy’s strength, they were quite low level and with them piling out through a narrow corridor their numbers would never be a problem. Her illusionary self drew out the paper fan she liked to claim she used for magic and swiped gracefully through the air and summoned waves of blue flame sending them towards the feral who had swiped at her. Again she matched her timing and delivered concise strikes with her blade to defeat as to allow her illusion to appear real. Both her and her illusionary self jumped back a few steps. She realigned with illusionary self and took a combat pose with her sword facing towards the enemies with the fan held high behind her. “Lazzy-chan! This is so fun!” She exclaimed hoping to see what he could provide in the current situation. Her method of killing would take too much energy and in fact would prefer to sneak into the ruins but with her partner she could do such a thing. Hopefully he’d have a more effective way of dealing with them.

Aurelius Lazard Lazard had followed the girl all the way to the ruins and both of them had entered together. As expected, the place was overrun by several monsters, particularely the undead. Although, they were only living skeletons, Lazard had plenty of experience with magic, so dealing with them would be no problem for him. However, the girl rushed in first and began to immediately start the assault. He wondered how she could be so careless and just rush in, but since these foes were weak, he did not need to worry. What followed was quite an unique display of skills. The girl locked herself in skillful close combat and also casted magic with her fan. After a while she cheerfully called out to him, although some undead were still left. "I am glad that you have fun, but let us give them their final rest. It is surely not easy for them too..." Lazard spoke with a hint of melancholy. To him the dead should not be disturbed and especially not be abused as weapons. After all their suffering in life, why can't they rest even in death? Losing his smile, Lazard assumed a more serious expression. He did not want to see them struggling any longer. Taking out one of his books, he began to chant a spell... "Light that shines through the darkest of nights. Vanquisher of shadows, hear my prayer... Lux Inlustre! While chanting his incantation, Lazard stretched out his arm, his palm creating a large white rotating magic circle. Glowing brighter with each moment, the circle fired of a enourmous light beam, engulfing all the undead and obliterating them in the process... After that, the circle vanished and Lazard let out a sigh. Immediately assuming his usual expression afterwards, he smiled and turned to Youko while speaking: "Now, shall we continue?"

Youko stood ready to strike again as the ferals crept closer. As she didn’t want to deal with them she was glad to hear Lazard hadn’t wimped out and intended to join the fight. With that knowledge she twirled into a powerful slash knocking several feral back and then swiftly jumped back to his side. She lowered her weapon and closed her fan and turned to her companion. The chance to see his magic was too big a thing to miss. For once she remained quiet while she focused on what he was doing. She never knew when she might want to imitate him through illusion and learning more about different magic never hurt. He again used a circle in his casting though this time he chanted some words read from a book. The spell was much different to last time as it summoned a beam of light that finished off the remaining feral. The casting was impractically long for most situations but the power it held was quite significant. Youko liked it. She was in no way powerful as her magic was all trickery and her swordsmanship was to do with grace and agility. It appeared that as a partnership they suited each other well. She would still like to see more to know his abilities a little clearer but with number of books he carried she assumed he could cast a number of different and useful spells. The mission wasn’t over yet so there was still a good chance there’d be a lot more for her to see. With the spell finished and the feral gone Lazard had turned to her asking if they should continue on. She looked up to the remarkably taller man and nodded with a smile on her face. She sheathed her sword now that the enemies were gone but still chose to hold the fan in her hand. With everything away she skipped on ahead into the darkness of the tunnel the feral had come out of. It wasn’t that dark for her but the further they progress eventually her natural ability to see in the dark would fade. With a quick snap of her fan she produced several small balls of blue, ghostly fire which floated next to her. Due to the nature of her illusions they would provide light though she had kept them dim so even though she could see far into the distance she doubted Lazard would be able too much else but her. She imagined he would have his own source of light but with her keen sense she should be able to notice anything the might interfere with the two of them. After taking a few steps into the tunnel Youko whispered, “Lazzy-chan, shhhh. We should keep quiet while we’re in here so we don’t attract any ghosts.” It was natural for humans to be scared of the dark and she felt playing that part would be better for the both of them. She believed the feral from before had been sent due to their fiddling with the illusion and believed it wouldn’t be long before something else would be sent their way and this time probably a little more intelligent. Announcing their position to enemy was foolish and it wasn’t like they were talking about anything interesting anyway.

Aurelius Lazard The girl was willing if not eager to continue on. Despite her young appearance she was quite the ambitious one... As Lazard and Youko ventured further into the cave, the source of light gradually began to diminish. During these situations it was very practical to he his magical sight on. Closing his eyes, Lazard casted "Conspectum Magicis" on himself. It was a spell that did not require any form of incantion, only pure concentration was needed to activate it. His partner used a different way to deal with the darkness. She had created some floating blue fire balls which where illuminating a rather small area. After that she had suggested staying quiet in order not to attract any monsters. Lazard nodded with a friendly expression, after all he would do anything to avoid having to fight... As they got deeper into the ruins, Lazard could see a faint light to his left. To describe it more precisely, he could see a room being illuminated by light, although everything was blue to him, he could at least distinguish between light and dark. Deactivating his magical sight, Lazard could see it very clearly as he went further into the ruins. ![]() There was a single gate before him with a picture of a tree. He knew that there were two options what would be behind it: The puzzle box or... a library. Especially the latter was very interesting for him. Maybe it was time to finally get a new book he had not read before, but how would one open this door?

With the source of light dealt with and her partner ready to follow her, Youko made her way further down the dark tunnel. Her keen senses allowed her to limit the risk of danger significantly though things were strangely simple as nothing blocked their path. The traps that had been set up had all been triggered earlier or disabled. Something definitely wasn’t right as someone else had definitely entered these ruins before the two of them had. She couldn’t say how long ago it was but it was still worrying. After make some headway into the ruins Youko was able to see a faint light coming from the distance. It was an unusual thing to see but given it was the first clue they had found on anything in the ruins so far it was probably best to investigate. She didn’t pick up anything with her hearing or smell as she approached closer. As she approached closer she couldn’t shake the feeling something was wrong. After the initial attack it had been too easy to make it this far. It felt like they were being drawn in purposely but with no other choice they had to press on. Reaching the room she saw the light cascade down from the ceiling. It illuminated a door on the other side of room with an illustration of a tree on it. The room itself was had a high ceiling and apart from some column along the side and stairs to the door at the other end it was completely empty, or at least from what her sense could pick up. The situation didn’t sit right with her. After passing through set off traps they now reached a closed door with absolutely no sign of the people that might have come before them. They may have made it further inside and sealed the door again, but for what purpose. If not, did they become the feral Lazard had dealt with earlier. Either way this room appeared to have a trick to it. With so many uncertainties she couldn’t just run into the room and had to keep up her act she would have to remain scared. She turned to Lazard showing distress on her face, “This place is scary.” With that established she would let him enter the room first to trigger anything dangerous. It might be underhanded but if she could, she would save him from whatever may be triggered. If it was beyond her power to avoid and deal with in the first place it was better it was him then herself.

Aurelius Lazard Lazard approached the sealed door, but the girl had turned to him and said that this place was scary. Bearing his usual smile, Lazard would not let her down and try to make her feel a little better. "Don't worry. If anything happens, I will keep you out of harm." He spoke in his soothing and calm voice. After all, he was the older one out of them and thus it was his duty to ensure her safety, or so he thought... After having calmed the girl down, Lazard turned to the door again. The tree reminded him of something. Maybe he could use his "Conspectum Magicis" to see what could open it. The spell was easily casted and it revealed an unique revelation to him... "Sephiroth..." Indeed, this tree was a picture of the ten sephiroth of the tree of life. As he looked closer at the image he could see it. At the bottom there was Malkuth. Then there was Jesod. To the left was Hod, Geburah and Binah. To the right was Nezach, Chesed and Chokmah Lastly there was Kether. Lazard repeated them as if he were entranced. "Malkuth...Jesod...Hod...Geburah...Binah...Nezach...Chesed...Chokmah... Kether." Repeating these words Lazard fell into deep thought. Something was missing... Suddenly his eyes opened, his iris glowing blue from his "Conspectum Magicis". There were only 9 of them! All in all, no matter how much he counted, only nine sephiroth were written on the tree. The last sephiroth, "Tiphereth", was not here instead there was a depression visible in the place where Tiphereth should have been. It was round and it seemed like one had to put an orb there or something. "Little girl! Have you seen an orb on anywhere? An orb with "Tiphereth" written on it?

She followed a few steps behind him as he crossed the room. Nothing was triggered and they reached the door without problems. Maybe Youko was over thinking things and it would be a simple job, but the fact nothing had happened only made her more suspicious. There must be something to do with the door. Whether or not that was the case the door still stood as a formidable obstacle. It was sealed shut and no force of strength would be able to open it. They might be able to succeed through destroying it with some magic but there was a high chance it could cause the ruins to cave in as well. The only clue they had was the tree and text associated with it that had been carved into the door. It was hardly a stretch to assume that the door might be some kind of riddle given what they were looking for. The picture and words meant absolutely nothing to her. She barely knew how to read and had trouble reading the words that were written. She had never studied in her life so it was little surprise it made no sense to her. Luckily, her companion seemed to be on to something as he started reading the gibberish. She tried to follow what he was thinking but it was impossible for her. The ten random words he said she couldn’t relate to anything. Youko was forced to do nothing while he continued to figure it out. To her luck, it only took a few more seconds before Lazard called out giving her something to do. An orb with the writing ‘Tiphereth’ was some sort of clue. Her scan of the room had brought up no such thing but a few places in the room were hidden from sight from the path they had taken. It was possible it was hiding in such a place. As usual everything she did she had to coat with her act. “Is it like a game?” Youko questioned, “It’s a game!” With her question answered she jumped to actions as she started to hop around the room. The most suspicious places were the columns along the side of the ruins. Around half of each one she had yet to see so she danced her way through them looking for something with writing on it. It wasn’t long before she came upon a column with writing located on the left side of the room, second from the back. She paused for while she tried to read the writing, “Tiferith.” She proclaimed not sure if she had read it right but it sounded similar to what he said. She still had half to room to search and she intended to do so. If this was the thing he was looking for it would just be to put her mind at easy but she didn’t want to jump on the answer if the right one hadn’t been given yet. She would let him do as she pleased as she moved to the other side of the room. Again moving through the column she found yet another orb imbedded in the column with the same writing on it. She may not be able to pronounce it but the letters were definitely the same. “Tiferith.” She called out again. This time it was located on the right of the room, seconded from the front. Was there something more to this puzzle Lazard hadn’t figured out? Youko couldn’t even start to theorise not knowing what ‘Tiphereth’ or any of the other words meant.

Aurelius Lazard As soon as Lazard had asked her the question, the girl began to think that it was a game and happily jumped around the room. Her childish energtic behaviour made him smile. Still, an valuable orb would not be easy to find and he again fell into deep thought, muttering words to help hims olve the puzzle. "Tiphereth... the beautiful sun..." Just as he pronounced these words, his gaze fell to the spot where the sunlight was shining down. At the exact same location there was a large symbol of a sun as big as the circle the light created, however, only the circle of the sun matched the light with its pointed-looking sunrays being in the dark. He was sure that if looking from bird-eye view it would look like this. Looking back at what the girl was doing, it seemed that she was inspecting the pillars for clues. As the girl went from the left side of the room to the right side, Lazard looked at the pillar she had been looking at before. It read "Tiphereth". A symbol in the middle of the room and pillars with the sephiroth written on them. All these had to be connected in some way or another... Upon closer inspection, Lazard found an a small mirror looking thin in the column, although it would not really look like a mirror if he hadn't actived his magical sight. The mirror and the sun symbol probably would not have been seen on first glance unless one had inspected it in great detail or if one used other means to reveal them. Of course, as Lazard touched the mirror hidden in the column nothing happpened. He had probably found the answer to solving this puzzle, but not the means on how to do it. According to his theory, the mirror needed to reflect light in such a special way that it would illuminate the pointed sunrays. The mirror was already directed in the right way, but how would one reflect only pointed sunrays? Lazard decided to leave the mirror for a while and went to see how the girl was doing. She was standing in front of another column, but this time Lazard was surprised at what she had found. An orb with the writing "Tiphereth" on it, but sadly, it was not the orb he had seeked. Furthermore it also had the same sun symbol as the ground yet without the circle and only with the sunrays. At this moment, it had struck him and Lazard began to smile. "What a marvelous revelation. The secret hidden away in the sun's face, being illuminated by bright light and creating such a unique riddle, can now be solved." As Lazard went and proceeded to touch the orb... nothing happened. "How can this be? I am sure it was supposed to glow and create the solution." Lazard was puzzled. Originally, if the orb would have activated, the sunrays on the orb would have shone to the mirror. The mirror would have directly reflected it to the symbol, illuminating the sunrays in the process and thus he was sure the true orb would have been revealed. However, just as he wanted to inspect the rest of the room, shadows jumped out of the orb and gathered together, creating a very unholy creature... ![]() It was a grim reaper. One of the most malevolent forces in existence. Even Lazard had to admit that he was a fearsome foe... However, given Lazard's nature he was not one who would run away if confronted with obstacles as his desire to read arcane texts was stronger than his fear of death. "So, even death itself has come to greet us. Well, I am quite honored to make your acquaintance as well, Mr. Reaper. Youko. If you don't want to confront death, then I suggest you get out of here now."

Youko finished confirming there was nothing on the final remaining pillar as her partner had followed her in her actions and was making his way over to the second pillar that had ‘Tiphereth’ written on it. With the room investigated there was nothing left for her to do but re-join with her partner. She didn’t think there was much chance of understanding what was going on but she would still watch him in hopes she could at least learn something. She was an extremely curious being and hated being left in the dark. Throughout her life she hadn’t had any chances to learn anything formally and with her driving passion she had learnt a lot about combat, her magic, and her street smarts but she was always intrigued by new things she saw or heard wanting to investigate more. In some situations she had, and in other she had reasons that prevented her from doing so. Whatever Lazard was talking about was going to be the latter. This place was unusual and her gut feeling was they shouldn’t leave as soon as possible. It was hardly the time to ask her partner to explain everything to her and by the looks of it, it shouldn’t take too much longer. Lazard appeared to be onto something as he started talking about the sun and light or something. Youko didn’t really follow but the boy looked so sure of himself so she didn’t see any point to interject. Lazard proceeded with his attempts to solve it but nothing came of it as even he seemed to be confused now. Youko had thought maybe they had missed something but it would have been nothing she could have picked up as she had searched the room thoroughly. Given it appeared it might have something to do with magic there could very well be some magical thing she had failed to notice. She was on the same train of thought as Lazard but neither of them would have time to do anything else. As if drawn out by the touch to the stone something beyond her wildest thoughts had appeared before them. The darkness that sprouted forth from the stone had swirled together to form the body of a reaper. The sheer absurdness of it would have startled her if she hadn’t been the veteran she was. There was one thing she knew, and that was that this job was near impossible to complete if this was to be there opponent. Not once in history had there ever been an incident where a reaper had been bested in combat or magical prowess as neither had no effect on such creatures. If they were lucky the creature would appear to be nothing more than an illusion and if not she doubted their chances of survival. After all she doubted they could even run at this point. Her young partner, Lazard, was the first to act. He foolishly spoke down to her and appeared ready to die with his foolish and rash actions. It was the case with most of the young people who tried to take on such feats. The world wasn’t some sort of game and overstepping your boundaries would get you killed. Youko had learnt this, and also seen several inexperienced humans die because they overestimated themselves. She didn’t want to see Lazard follow the same path, and if she didn’t do anything she’d surely die herself. She dropped her act though her illusion of her appearance remained. “Lazard!” She firmly said, “Don’t engage it.” The seriousness in her voice reflected a completely different side to her. It should have been able stop him. She then turned her attention to the reaper deciding it wasn’t worth continuing with the mission. She wouldn’t risk her life for the sake of a pitiful 6000 gold pieces. Even if it was an illusion she didn’t want to take a chance it was actually the real thing. “Reaper…” She again pronounced firmly, “We had entered the ruins to retrieve a puzzle box, but if you don’t wish for us to continue we will leave quietly and not return. If not is there something we can do for you so you'll let us pass.” She had given her proposition and still had a few ideas left up her sleeve if that didn’t work.

Aurelius Lazard Lazard was taken aback by the serious voice of his partner. Indeed a reaper was very dangerous and upon encountering a hostile one, the chances of surviving were extremely slim. His partner tried to negotiate with the unholy being. Lazard however, had his own suspections. Why would a reaper appear in this place? Why would it come out of an orb? There may be a possibility in which the threat before him might not be what it seemed to be and Lazard would have taken the chance to confront it. Youko however, had stopped him. Indeed, it might have been foolish to blindly take the chance, but that was his nature. The thought of acquiring new texts was simply too grand. If it weren't for his partner, his obsession might have been the end of his rope. Originally, if the monster that the orb spawned had been defeated, he was sure that the puzzle would be solved. In this situation even Lazard himself was at loss what to do. If confronting him was not an option, what else would there be? Not once had he heard of negotiating with a reaper, but there was also a slight chance for things to turn out in a way differently than he had expected... The reaper himself did not seem hostile and upon hearing what the fox-girl had said he only raised his arm with his finger pointed at the door with the tree. As if he were inteding to convey a message he then pointed at Lazard. Particularly, at the books he was carrying around. Lazard took a defensive pose and his face showed a rare expression on his side. Seriousness. He had a feeling what the reaper intended to tell him. "Do not take the books inside" Of course this was only his own assumption and there might be something more. After the reaper finished, he released the light of the orb and what followed was exactly the sequence of actions Lazard had expected. The symbol on the ground revealed the orb and again the reaper pointed at it as if he would grant the trespassers access to what lies beyond the door. Following the reaper's request, Lazard took the orb and put it into the depression of the door. Slowly the door began to open and it revealed a huge and ancient library surrounding the puzzle box on a podium. Lazard could not help but be fascinated by the revelation. His urge to read one of them was great but the reaper was constantly watching. "Reaper. I do believe that it is forbidden to take one of these books?" Only nodding in an attempt to answer Lazard's question, the reaper then pointed a Youko and then to the library as if he were commanding her to go inside and take the puzzle box and then leave immediately which is why he pointed his finger to the exit afterwards.

The initial reaction for the reaper was a good one as it appeared to listen to Youko’s words. She didn’t lower her guard in the slightest given one wrong move could mean death. For the time being it appeared the reaper meant no harm. The question was why did it appear before them? There must be something it intended by showing itself. If it wasn’t to guide either of them to the afterlife then Youko had no clue what it could be. The possibilities drew Youko curious nature but she wouldn’t risk saying anything other than what was required. The actions the reaper had taken said more than any words it could have used. The first thing it did was point to the Halflings books he carried with him. To Youko the action was confusing as she wasn’t sure if the reaper wanted the book, or perhaps didn’t like it. The true meaning could have been anything but it appeared that Lazard was able to formulate his own reasoning as to what the reaper had meant. Youko felt he would be able to understand action better than her given he had more information about himself, and about the book he carried, which could be used to derive the meaning. With those steps taken the puzzle Lazard had solved unravel as he had expected. To Youko everything seemed slightly random as she had no clue what any of it meant but surely as he had mentioned it did involve light. With the puzzle solved the sealed door engraved with the illustration of a tree had opened. Why all of a sudden it happened Youko didn’t know but she decided to take it as a sign from the reaper that he would allow her to continue. She would have taken action if not taken back by the sight that was set before her. It might have been foolish for her to relax but the sight of the ancient library that was revealed was beyond anything she had imagined. The books that were held in the shelves were older than any she had ever seen and just the sheer number was amazing. Youko assumed there had to hundreds of unique books detailing things beyond her imagination. It was highly unlikely that she’d be able to actually read or understand the books but just the libraries existence triggered her curious nature again. She wanted to know what they had found. What was so important that a reaper guarded the gate, and just why it had opened the door to them? Before she could ask any questions her partner, Lazard, spoke up. He had questioned the reaper whether it was forbidden to take any of the books, and the response was a solemn nod. In conjunction with the previous actions Youko was finally able to understand what the reaper had meant earlier. The books in the library weren’t to be touched, treasures that had one of the most dangerous guardians. In a way it answered part of what she wanted to know, but it didn’t answer the main part as to what exactly was this library that it was so important. Still she couldn’t ask the reaper as it wasn’t the talkative type. It gestured again suggesting Youko take the puzzlebox and leave. She wondered why she had been allowed to take it given it was obviously the centre piece of the library when the surrounding books were off limits. Not wanting to anger the reaper she nodded before respectfully entering the library. She tried to take in as much as she could walking past the bookshelves but not being able to read well kept her from getting any book titles. In fact she had no clue what to even look for as she had very little experience with libraries and even less with ancient ruins. Unable to comprehend any of it she reached the podium. She took the puzzlebox and left the library without as much as a hiccup. The situation didn’t sit right with her. The reapers involvement was definitely unexpected but its actions also confused her. The puzzlebox obviously had some significance but it was willing to let them take it. She couldn’t comprehend why. The other thing that was on her mind was all the stuff that made her feel unsecure entering the ruins; the desert illusion, the ferals, and the set off traps. Absolutely none of them appeared to have anything to do with the reaper, or the library. There were still a lot of mysteries that remained unsolved. As curious as she was she felt it would be better to avoid learning the answers. She felt her curiosity would lead to her death. “Lazard,” She said, “It’s time for us to leave.” She didn’t know what was going through his mind but she hoped he would follow. Through they had retrieved the puzzlebox she felt the mission had only begun. She felt the box was going to cause more trouble than it was worth as even the reaper seemed keen to part with it.

Aurelius Lazard Reluctantely, Lazard complied to Youko's request. He was very eager to at least look at one of these books, but he was not allowed to. If it weren't for the reaper Lazard would have done so. "Alright...Let us leave this place..."
