Probably not. I think its got some potential to be successful with more mature fans who're willing to give it a chance but considering how limited the market is and how limited the appeal of YKK is, i doubt theres much chance it with, sadly.

BUT WE CAN STILL HOPE!

A related topic from the occasionally functional The Age of Evening Calm, formerly known as ykk@pander.net

I'm not expecting it anytime soon but that doesn't stop me from hoping. One of my old classmates recently mentioned that he got interested in Neil Gaiman's Sandman series since his philosophy professors also read it along with Gaiman's other works. If YKK were somehow able to gain a niche like that, publishers might consider licensing it.

Hmm, even with the '?' the level of excitement managed to shoot up winning lottery ticket high, then drop all the way back down in a matter of seconds.

I'd rather it came out in the UK :P

The Neil Gaiman angle is an interesting one. His works *were* a pretty cult thing until he moved into novels, and those novel started getting picked up for film. But remeber he still wrote in Engilsh - YKK getting picked up by hollywood is far less likely (or wanted - can you even imagine it? XD) Given the fact that some mainsteam manga never get fully released in English because of poor sales, it's hard to see anyone taking a chance on YKK.

YKK isn't a manga for everyone. =(

This is sad. YKK is the best manga ever.

As much as I love YKK I'm not willing to call it the best ever and I still hope it will make the trip over here. Yes I think YKK Is in the Top Ten of manga in my book.

No you wouldnt, hahah. If it did, it would probably take twice as long to come out and be more expensive.
As much as its great to support our own industry, it ends up being easier to import from the US, heheh.

YKK is still a somewhat obscure manga even in Japan, so I think they've already decided that there isn't a market for it in the U.S., or for any of Ashinano's works for that matter.

That is apparently the case, which is sad because it's critically acclaimed, and I'm sure if it was licensed, many of us would be willing to buy the manga. But apparently we just aren't a large enough amount of people for them to justify bringing the series over. But I do wonder just how well series like ARIA (notwithstanding the switch to Tokyopop) and Mushishi are selling.

If it ever did occur, I would be fine if Del Rey handled it. :P

I think they'd be my choice too.
Though after originally thinking about it, I was thinking i'd rather have Dark Horse as their treatment of series is really top notch. But for something like YKK, I think Del Ray'd do a smashing job, as they've done with MushiShi.

Heheh. How so?
Maybe they'd try and make it all edgy. I can already see it now:
"Get ready for the sure to be, manga smash of summer 2009!! YKK!! Set in a post-alpocalyptic world, where lesbian biker chicks rule the land. 1 women. 1 job. Coffee.
COMING SOON."

Would be epic i tells ya'.

I was actually thinking Tokyopop might license YKK due to its similarities to another title which they took up (BLAME!).

2) When you think about, a lot of the chapters could begin with the words, "Another day in the life of Killy..." In a sense, it's also a slice-of-life manga every now and then.

Hahahhahahaha, wonderful.

Hm... I'm curious, do people think that Viz's starting up of an online version of Ikki magazine, featuring scans of mostly seinen series, improves the odds of YKK eventually getting some sort of official release? I mean, something like Children of the Sea can't exactly claim to have mainstream appeal (unless mainstream is a pun, since it's got all that marine biology-type stuff going on...), nor would it seem like it would do reliably well based on its art, which is not only nowhere near as pretty as YKK's, but is frequently just kind of... bad. And that was their -flagship- for this new line. (Of course, said line also includes Bokurano, which means I must now end any criticism of Viz with "...but they did license Bokurano," for the rest of forever unless they screw it up somehow. I may also owe them my soul, I'm not entirely clear on the arrangement)

And on a serious note, how -would- you market YKK to English-speakers? I mean, forget advertising, even, what would you call it? Not as a rhetorical question, I'm genuinely wondering if anyone has any ideas... the title isn't particularly a strong point of the series. It captures the "nothing to do with anything" nature of most of the "plot," and it gives the series bookends, but that's about it.

Anyway, if all else fails, this series is one of those things I plan to beat my friends who want to work as translators one day about the head with, until they whine at their bosses and make it happen somehow. Or something like that. Hey, a plan with a couple dozen "yeah, if..." statements in it beats nothing, right?

Aye. It's vague and not even that symbolic compared to, say, The Catcher in the Rye.

Since describing the day-to-day activities doesn't sound exciting either, it's probably best to emphasize the general mood/atmosphere and themes instead. Words that come to mind are "mellow," "comatose relaxation," "retirement," and "twilight of humanity." Maybe suck in a few elitists (or perverts) by having a disclaimer stating that the manga is meant for older and more mature audiences.

As for Viz, it probably depends on how many and which chapters would be made available if they chose to include YKK in their online lineup. The most representative chapters I could think of from the early volumes are chapter 0 (Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou) and the short essay in volume 4.

No Kimagure Orange Road, no Ai-Ren, no Living Game, no Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. . . It just seems that slower paced slice-or-life manga never get released over here. I'm amazed that Maison Ikkoku did.

I think when the money problem ease and people have the funds to spend things may change. As to Maison Ikkoku this was brought over by a big player and sold fairly well from what I have seen, so give things some time and try to find some other titles to read for now.

It doesn't really matter to me whether it comes out in the U.S. or not, I've read it online and can do so however many times I wish.

Though I suppose it would be good to get a powerful series like this introduced to the wider public through a licensed release. Even if its chances of becoming big wouldn't be...well, big, due to the rather marginal audience it's targeted towards.

When you're a collector, simply reading is not enough. You WANT it. That's why I'm so completely rotted at TokyoPop for not finishing Aria.

MAL is so incredibly old at this point that it is one of the few decently-sized websites where you could see a thread from 10 years ago updated recently. So, for my own morbid curiosity, I went and checked to see what has become of the participants from this thread. Here is a list of the participants from most recent list update extending backward into the past of inactivity:

Alas, OP was the first to go inactive less than a year after starting the thread. Of the 14 participants, only 3 remain active on MAL (excluding myself).
