(This is kind of long. Sorry 'bout that!)
---
Zaine looks around a field. He wonders to himself why everything is so much taller than him. Looking down, he discovers that he must be a child. (Weird.) Curious about his surroundings, he wanders through the field until he sees a black smoke cloud in the distance. (What's going on?)
He runs to the top of a hill...
...to see a great city under siege.
The dark smoke is winding it's way upwards slowly, as if to revel in the moment. Most, if not all, of the buildings in the city appear to be in flames. Ships fly overhead dropping explosives below. Buildings collapse onto each other, and on those who could not get away. Screams and wails echo throughout the valley.
Tears run down Zaine's cheeks. (What the hell is this?!)
He sags to his knees, unable to move or looks away from the horrific scene in front of him.
"Zaine!"
"Zaine!"
Two people are running up the hill at him, a man and woman. The woman is bruised and her right arm dangles limply at her side. She is fair skinned, though it is hard to tell with all the grime and blood that covers her. The man is dressed in full armor, his black hair sticks out under his helm at places. This pike, along with his armor is shaped into looking like a dragon. Blood runs off both as he runs to Zaine along with the woman.
The woman hugs Zaine fiercely. "Zaine. You are alright." She sounds relieved. Her voice is like music.
The man comes closer. He looks at Zaine fondly, then puts down his spear and hugs them both. "We thought we had lost you." His voice is deep, with a rumble in it.
Zaine stands there, dumbstruck. (What...?)
The man stands up and grabs his pike. "Come Irrilla, we must hurry."
The woman releases Zaine. "Yes. There is little time." She holds her hand out to Zaine, and he takes it without question.
The three run for a time, down the hill and into the woods, farther away from the burning city. Finally, they reach a clearing that holds a small shed.
The woman waits with Zaine while the man brings somethings out of the shed and assembles them. She sits crosslegged, Zaine in her lap, and strokes his hair.
"Do not be afraid." She says to Zaine. "All will be well."
Zaine looks up at her. (She's beautiful.) Her face, though covered in dust and dirt, seems perfect to Zaine. Her rich brown hair frames her face and falls down past her elbow. Her mouth has a gentle curve to it, her nose is small and rounded, and her eyes, which are the same gray-blue as Zaine's, seem to emit love. As he looks into them, he finds he feels completely safe, there in her lap.
The man walks over then. "Hurry. They will find us soon." He walks them over to the finished shuttle.
The woman bends down to Zaine's level. She kisses him on the forehead. "Remember that no matter where you go, I will be there to watch over you."
"As will I." The man says. He removes his helmet, showing his square face. His chin is covered by a short beard, and his black hair is tied back into a short ponytail, though two strands hang down in the front. He removes his necklace, and puts it around Zaine. Zaine recognizes it immediately. "Never lose this. It will help guide you when you are lost." The man smiles at Zaine. He picks him up and sets him in the shuttle. The man and woman stand next to each other proudly.
"Do not fear." The man says. "The road ahead of you will be long, but never give up hope. Though our paths are now diverging, you must never forget those who love you."
The woman has tears in her eyes as the shuttle door closes. Zaine watches with a sense of dread. (Where are their pods?!)
The two wave at him with sad smiles on their faces, and tears running down their cheeks.
Zaine puts a hand up and waves at them too. (What will happen to them...?)
His pod flies up and into the atmosphere without incident, watching as everything grew smaller as he went higher. After only a minute he reaches space. There, hundreds upon thousands of ships fight each other. More than once his pod was roughly banged into by a passing fighter. Eventually, even those became smaller until they were mere specs. The planet looks to be molten from what he guessed were battlefields and other burning cities. (How could this--)
His thoughts were cut off as the planet turned inward on itself, then exploded. The force was intense; the ships that were specs before vanished in a wave of fire.
(NO!!) was the only thought Zaine could think before the pod was hit by the wave and was surrounded in a sea of flames.
---
Zaine woke with a start, breathing heavily. He looked around the room, half expecting to see fire. Sunlight crept in through the window, signalling the start of a new day. Cyn slumped in a corner, asleep. Alexi was gone. Alan lay on a bed still.
Zaine let out a shaky breath. He sat on the end of his bed and put his head in his hands. |
