THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

Wow, it took them 9 episodes to get Crinn in the cockpit of the titular mecha.

I respect that. Rather than rushing him into it so that they could sell models, they took their time to develop the setting and politics. Very classy.

The dialogue scene between Donan and Samalin should be extremely important but it's as mystifying as everything has been so far and just as bad at accomplishing its apparent goal (creating sympathy for the rebellion).

Samalin's supposed clever point about his shackles falls flat because he's been arrested as an armed rebel against the government. If he were an intellectual publishing arguments for independence and was arrested in a censorship regime, he'd have room to be smug about morality. As it is, he's looking down on the Earth forces for imprisoning him for trying to kill them. What else are they going to do?

His point about equality is also lost. Before the fake coup, Deloyer was a colony and after it it's a full member of the Federation. Then why is it not equal to the other members? There could easily be a legal equality and a wide practical inequality, but we're not shown it and can't just assume it exists.

He was correct about "false democracy" assuming he was talking about the way Donon forced Federation membership through using the false coup, but while this is an undemocratic, unilateral act, it doesn't necessarily mean anything bad for the people of the planet and hardly seems worth killing over.

Lastly, his line about being a "historian of the future" was glib and silly.

Once again Donan comes off as interested in peace, understanding and compromise whereas the rebels are bent on war for no demonstrated reason.

Crinn's apparent relief at hearing Samalin say he wasn't like his father was kind of pathetic. He just seems like a child craving approval.

To reply to both your posts in the episode 7 and episode 9 discussion threads, to say I disagree is an extreme understatement and tbh what you're saying comes across to me as some colonial apologist rhetoric. I fully sympathize with Deloyer. The Deloyeran government was forcibly overthrown in a Federation conspiracy, a new Federation-backed leader with near-dictatorial power was placed at the head of the provisional government, Deloyer is placed under martial law, a guerilla hunt is enacted for the purpose of silencing any independence movement and independence-sympathizers (as seen in the beginning of episode 8 where Rocky's sister quiets Rocky from criticizing Stein) and turning the Deloyerans against one another, and this was all done against the will of the people and by ignoring the democratic process. Many scenes, such as the violent gangs that beat Deloyerans on Earth and the constant shots of the dilapidated buildings of the poverty-stricken Deloyer neighborhoods is indicative of the racial tensions and the economic inequality at play.

is something I find particularly disagreeable
