We're all here because we love anime, but I guess most of us love animation despite the country it comes from. So, I was wondering.. what are you favourite b&w non-anime cartoons?

My first pick would be The Skeleton Dance from Walt Disney's Silly Symphonies

Another good one is a retelling of Snow White featuring Betty Boop. Not only for the story (which is rather fun) nor the animation, but mostly for the amazing song by Cab Calloway (4.20 to 6.01)

Currently I'm literally obsessed with some pre-war experimental movies (Lan Lye, Norman McLaren, Oskar Fischinger... though first two created mostly colour shorts).

Lan Lye, Tusalava:

Norman McLaren, Le Merle:

If we're talking about more conventional story (and my beloved puppet animation), then the firsts Starewicz's films are still great:

though the about Fox is better - but it's a normal movie (duration: more than hour); first part, if somebody's interested:

And in sand/salt/etc. department of animation (it counts if it's in black&white?), Korejwo's Swan is quite nice - very skilful work, without doubts.

Hmm well what first comes to mind for me would be the 1930s Popeye created by Fleischer. I think Popeye the Sailorman was a lot better back then and much less formulaic. (whole set can be found at karagarga)

I also enjoy the Skeleton Dance as well, would have brought it up if you hadn't already! It really is a fun little short.

Personally I think most of the good cartoons were in color though. Color cartoons popped up way before color anime. I'm a fan of the UPA Jolly Frolics series in particular.

I just saw this list yesterday on cracked called "5 old children's cartoons way darker than most horror movies", kind of found that one fascinating though I wouldn't say any of them turned out to be 'favorites' or anything like that.
