And the interesting thing is Buddhism indeed tolerates all these different belief systems without as much of schism or heresy suppression as in the Judo-Christain-Islamic (or Abrahmic) religions. This is why the view of Buddhism being "neither" mono or polytheistic somehow makes sense.

This is another western view of Buddhism I had that didn't survive my actually looking into it. There were plenty of buddhist interpretations that were suppressed in Japan. A well known example is the Nichiren school, but if you look into the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, they mention other examples of elite Buddhism smashing upstart versions of Buddhism, starting from the early 8th century all the way through the introduction of pure land Buddhism. It is hard to read the "Tale of the Heike" without noticing that both Hiei and Kouyasan had standing armies of Buddhist "monks" that would descend on the capital. Some of the fiercest opponents Nobunaga and Hideyoshi fought were Buddhist, including the Ikko-Ikki movement and again Kouyasan.
Well, actually I did not come from a western school of view (I am Asian after all) so I don't know much about the western view of Buddhism. For me, the more I read about Buddhist history the more I think the schism and heresy suppression is not as severe as in the west. Nichren school was suppressed but also grew tremendously successful over time, and one reason is because the suppression was never as systematic and thorough as the suppression of, say, the Albigenses heresy in medieval France. The Buddhism schools may have fought each other in the past, but it seems it was more over political influence and material gain than over dogma and an "orthodox" interpretation. Those schools usually have back-ups from various political factions in the court or feudal lords and the fight can be viewed as an extension of the power struggle among the political elites. The standing armies of Buddhist warrior monks like Hiei-san are also more about safeguarding their interest and to make the Heian court do its bidding. The Ikki uprisings was more about peasants revolting against feudal lords in the name of religion and Nobunage's burning of Hiei-san was more about eliminating political stronghold of opposition lest the warrior monks from Heian era reared its head again. Sporadic episodes like these all happened, but severe suppression based on a perception of heresy committed is not as frequent as in the Christian or Islamic world. The only really large scale one that continued for an extended period of time is only Nichiren - though ironically Nichiren and its many associated branches are now one of the most powerful Buddhist sects in Japan.

For RDG, Buddhism never once crosses my mind. As for why Kumano area is picked (though the exact shrine in the novel/anime does not really exist) perhaps it is because of the region's fame of being spiritual or it is an area that the author is fond of.

For next episode I can't help but feeling that we may end up having more questions raised than answered (again). We will see more about what the power balance of the various factions in the school works, and perhaps we will get to know more about the power of the various main characters as well as what the school is supposed to be for with all those judges and winning the "competition". I am not sure if it leaves much room to reveal more about what Himegami is and the implication of her manifestation, past and future.

So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

Have either of you been to Fushimi Inari shrine? It was one of the places I stopped at last November. I didn't know much about it before I got there and had only planned an hour or so, but then I discovered the trails behind it on the hills and ended up spending almost 5 hours, and still only got through about half the trails.

Yep. Love that shrine. Was a bit lucky in a strange way, there was an actual thunderstorm the day I went there, and it gave the shrine a peculiar electric feeling that made it seem even more supernatural. Even had a "fox wedding" shower. Very appropriate for an Inari shrine!

Little bit of trivia. There is an excellent chance that the Fortune Cookie was invented there and from there was imported to the US.

That's a good way to put it. I'm not a religious person but that place grabbed my attention in that sort of way - very moving.

My other "spiritual" event occurred when I went to Izumo Taisha on the day when all the gods in Japan return there for their annual monthly party, and it was a very similar day where you can feel the static electricity in the air and the winds are blowing through the trees, swaying them with that swashing swash sound like, well, a bunch of spirits murmuring as they blow into the Shrine.

Still pretty confused about what's actually going on :') The whole power struggle thing vs Takayanagi, I think it really needs to be properly explained. Wasn't expecting Mayura to sort of turn on Miyuki.

Can anyone explain what Mayura meant when she said whoever wins becomes a World Heritage Candidate? I've tried looking up the term on google, and all I get are references to preserving historical landmarks. Are we supposed to understand what she's talking about? Izumiko seemed to, or at least she stopped asking questions at that point.

Loved hearing more about what is actually going on in this school. Things just keeps on getting more and more interesting and I am starting to really like this show. Damnnn Mayura sure turned the whole mood serious there at the end. Looking forward to seeing the confrontation next episode.

Lol at Izumiko getting drunk and Miyuki panicking about it.

This is getting more interesting indeed. Some revelations and as well as there are more questions about the Academy and these characters. I don't usually d/l the version 0s but I'm grabbing the ep 7-8 now. :3

Oh btw, lovely sceneries in this episode. I'll definitely visit these places when I got the chance.

Okay, okay. I really need some help here! ^^
I enjoy the series overall, the atmosphere and the art is very nice, but I am having a lot of trouble following the story right now.
I would HIGHLY appreciate if somebody could sumarize in a few sentences what is actually going on here...I think I can enjoy it much more then.

Would be very nice! :-)

This episode, by the way, was slow paced but nicley done in my opinion. Like I said though, don't really understand it. XD

Pretty good episode, but the pace is so damn slow. Every single episode it feels like something big is about to happen but nothing really happens in the end. I keep looking forward to more even though there's no real reason for that...

I don't even know what they're trying to get at with this whole Mayura faction vs Takayanagi faction with the student council being the 'judges' and all. The last couple episodes were great but it did slow down here.

I'm enjoying this anime. There isn't a lot of action, but the story is good... I don't care too much for Izumiko. She is just way too naive/ignorant of... well, everything.

I don't see why this show is so confusing. Everything is explained or at least hinted at in the dialog. Itzumiko's nature was already explained after the first time she became posessed. The fact that all of the students have been gathered to be tested has also been explained. And of course if there's a test, there must be judges - hence the Student Council. Miyuki has already said that he and Izumiko should merely pretend that they are partners, that's why he doesn't see any point in fighting... unless he's lying to everyone. ;)

The story is not that complicated, but you do have to keep in mind that this is not an episodic series in which everything is wrapped up in 30 minutes. You have to pay attention to every conversation and make connections between episodes in order to keep up with what's going on. And of course it will be boring if you can't do that...

Isn't Izumiko already a WHC? Interesting.
Your mean should be an even bell curve only if you watch every show that comes out. Having a high-slung mean doesn't mean you're rating improperly. It can also mean you're selecting shows well to watch mostly things you enjoy.

Agree. The most confusing was why was there still any power struggle with Takayanagi when he was so humiliated and defeated last time around and then we where told he started keeping a very low profile.
Now suddenly Mayura tells us that she suspects the whole school might even been built for that loser(it was probably built for Izumiko i think)?
I don't get this shit? And the student council are judges? Judges of what? So in the end is like one big tournament of who is the most powerful in school?

Too be honest i feel little annoyed because it doesn't really seem that things are extremely complected but we get confused simply because they are presented and told in a very half-ass way. If they want to keep secrets to reveal is fine but why to they have to present the information they give us in such an unclear way?

It's been six episodes and I'm still pretty confused on what's going on LOL I need some explanation. Not subtle hints.

So, I guess I have mixed feelings towards the anime. There are some moments when I feel like "Wow, I love the vibes RDG gives off!" and some moments when I feel like "Are these kids kidding or what?"

It's kind of like a mix between the earlier episodes of Hyouka, some Shinsekai Yori episodes and Tari Tari. LOL

Shinkou is a pretty nice nickname for Miyuki.

Things I lol'd at:
When Mayura and Izumiko were being hit on, Manatsu and Miyuki came to the rescue!
Izumiko got drunk by eating too much! She's pretty funny when she's drunk.
SMF = Souda Mayura Fan Club.

But in reality, SMF is a club part of Mayura's faction in some sort of war between Mayura and Takayanagi in order to become a World Heritage Candidate.

And Miyuki actually has been hiding his true power! Looks like he'll have to show it or he'll lose the battle with the masked men.

But to be honest, even if this episode explains a lot, I am still confused.
I’m always searching for something, for someone. This feeling has possessed me I think, from that day… That day when the stars came falling.

For people who are still at this episode and confused about the "World Heritage Candidate" thing, remember back when Yukimasa came to the school as a teacher? He told Izumiko that the school was created to bring together young people who have the ability to commune with the divine, foster their abilities, and protect them. The reason? The ability to do so is getting more rare with each generation, making people like Izumiko, the Souda siblings, and the obnoxious shiki user basically an endangered species. The competition is to be selected as one of these protected individuals, presumably. (Though it may be something more Yukimasa like, such as a selection to see who is capable of helping protect the Himegami.)

With the information Yukimasa provided and the conversations between Izumiko and Mayura, it really shouldn't be that hard to follow.

Another good episode, yet now I have more questions. This show needs to make things more clear, sometimes I feel like they are going all over the place.

It would appear that they are cutting stuff from the original source.

Still that scene where she was outside with the other twin was nice. I would have liked to have seen Sagara's reaction.
