Looking up the standard definition of the "Yuri" genre has its limitations. One
very useful resource I can suggest is this fairly comprehensive article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuri_%28genre%29

There, they give two lists of anime series, sorted by:

(1) Yuri as a central element
(2) Yuri as an additional element

Just like anything else, a formal theoretical definition starts to make a lot more
sense after you have studied many specific examples. If you have not viewed
three of four of the series on these lists then you might not be well-positioned
to make comments on the genre, whether good or bad.

Yuri or not, whether they get boyfriends or not, my goggles say Riko x Maki is a potential otp yuri pair. I'm already happy with that conclusion.

Yuri-flavored

Zac Bertschy, the Executive Editor of Anime News Network, wrote that
Love Lab is "yuri-flavored". He also said,

. . Neither of them really knows what they're doing with boys, but hey,
. . they don't swing that way anyway. So these two are falling in love,
. . which is the likely selling point of this show. There are some other
. . cast members according to the opening theme, but I'm not sure
. . you're meant to care about anyone other than these two and their
. . blossoming romance.

You can find his full preview about half-way down this long webpage here:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/preview-guide/2013/the-summer-anime/zac

Another ANN reviewer indirectly hints that it has "yuri content". See here:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/preview-guide/2013/the-summer-anime/theron

Still another ANN reviewer uses the phrase "rampant girl-on-girl crushes":

Oh, for fuck's sake. Why you even bring those assholes here? They know shit about it. There is no romance between Maki and Waki. Berthy. go rewatch Aku no Shit.
Dammit. I can already see reactions after episode with boys from people who read these ignorant opinions.

I thought you would find it interesting.

Today I just happened to be reading ANN for a completely-unrelated reason,
since Zac recently criticized Stella Jogakuin C3-bu. Normally I never ever read
ANN. So it was pure luck that I found all of these comments about Love Lab.
I felt completely amazed to see what those three regular ANN reviewers were
all writing. I don't want to jump to final conclusions, but it seems that ANN is
unanimously classifying Love Lab as Yuri based on seeing Episode 1.

There is no romance between Maki and Waki.

Agreed. However, I think that plastic blow-up doll might be in love with Maki.

Actually, I've seen many websites where they purposely leave certain spoilerish characters out of the respective section UNTIL said characters appear in the actual show. This however, may not be the case with Love Lab.

In LL, I don't think the guys are super major characters anyway - or at least, they most likely won't be in the anime adaptation. Regardless, while I personally want this to be a yuri anime, that most likely will not be the case. I can sense that the male cast will be coming sooner or later.

I do find it rather odd how someone in the student council meeting mentioned that Fuji students aren't allowed to date, but yet, these girls proceed to find boyfriends anyway.

Well, I think there'll still be a lot of gags and 4-koma style scenes even after the guys appear, which is why I think the boys aren't considered main characters. I'm just going to look forward to it, even if I am disappointed that this won't be a yuri anime. I found the first three episodes to be HIGHLY amusing and really funny, so I have no reason to drop this series. xD

For those people who were hoping that Love Lab will be Yuri, it looks like you are
in for a very big disappointment. In fact, there is a Yuri anime drought that has
been going on for a very long time.

The most recent true Yuri anime series was Sasameki Koto (Oct-Dec 2009). If
you will accept just exaggerated comic nosebleed Yuri as a side element, then
the most recent one was Yuru Yuri (July 2011). A serious emotional depiction
of Yuri appeared in A-Channel (Apr-June 2011) as a side element.

Basically, the Yuri anime trend started with MariMite (2004) as a huge hit as a
light novel, manga, four-season anime and live-action movie. Some other anime
series followed. Then the trend stopped with Sasameki Koto (2009) after it
bombed.

However... it was announced just last month that a new Yuri four-panel slice-
of-life anime series "Sakura Trick" has been green-lit. The two female main
characters will actually kiss as opposed to just practicing how to hold hands.

Here are the information sources I used:

If it's supposed to be written like there is no romantic undertones between the girl main cast, but the audience percieves it as there is, does that make a reason to place a lable as Yuri or Shoujo-Ai?
(I'm also ignoring the person who started this topic, since my opinions clash with him.. on so many levels, I'd rather ignore him)

Only a little philosophical thought that occured to me. okanagan, do you have an opinion about this too?

Hi rsslayersr. Thanks. I would say that adults should enjoy the anime and
ignore the labels while children should be supervised by their parents and also
ignore the labels. So this thread does not really matter. However, I enjoy
getting into the philosophical details so...

Well, it doesn't look like that kind of story to me. But it is okay if other fans
use those words to express their ideas about what they like about the show.

Well explained, I learnt some things from this. Maybe it's your objective view to the show that gives you the other point of view than some of the 'I definitely see some romantic development here and there', but I'm pretty sure some indeed see it like this.

Not that it should matter. To add at least a bit to the reason of this topic. It's childish, in my opinion, to not watch a series over such a reason. Though, it's also childish to call people childish over having a different view than you.
I'd rather not care, since people do what people want for whatever reason.

I do think, though, that people will lable series with things like Yuri or Shoujo-Ai, even if the creators and writers didn't intend it, if they have the view of such a person I described earlier.

Now, my opinion about this series having anything to do with girls having romantic and/or illicid relationships with each other (and throw the pedofilic reason in there too, for good meassures); No.

I didn't dare to get into the definitions of the Yuri and Shoujo-Ai words. I've always been scared to get into the philosofical realm of language. Even if I would try to explain that in words, of look it up, the words that would've defined it, could've changed definition as well. I won't go into discussion over the definitions (though it seems this topic had it's fare share of discussion about this as well..)
With that said though, still thank you for explaining that view as well, eventhough I was more getting into the social pressure side of the question.
