| I didn't mind this first episode, it honestly did a good job establishing Guts' character, while also making me ask questions that would get me interested on what will happen next. Screw the demon flashback though gave me a headache, atleast OLM and the anime industry learned their lesson with the Porygon episode of Pokemon that same year. (Yes, OLM also animated this) |

| only reason i watch this is because i like the two arcs black swordsman and golden age arc. and this episode didnt disappoint. forging of the sword and the night time animation are damn pretty great. i dont mind the still frames. they are pretty good works of art. music somewhat matching. opening tho is another matter. Nobutoshi Canna did excellent job of portraying berserk the main character. |

| This is a clear example of "do not judge a book by its cover". The first episode is disconnetted from the plot, it takes a little piece of the manga and it doesn't even try to explain anything. I like the '90s animation, I remember stopping at first episode like a couple of times and then reading the manga (which is so much better to explain Guts past). After this one, there is the Golden Arc, I really hope they don't cut too much. Censorships are mandatory for something so gore as Berserk, but it seems like a generic show from the first episode. But I really enjoy the animation, I don't think I'll ever be disappointed by battles in this '90s version. The opening is a bit weird and happy like a straight-out of a Spokon. The ending is more melanchonic. |

| Coming from the manga (and the movie trilogy) my hopes were high, and this first episode delivered. I have heard this is the best adaptation of berserk from many people and ive had my eyes on it for some time and after this first episode im already loving it. I dont remember much of what happened early on in the berserk manga so i was kinda lost at the start of this episode but as it went on i knew what was going on. This first ep had some really amazing moments, from the start of the episode with the bar fight with Guts and those guards to the end of the ep with Guts fighting that snake dude. The action throughout paired with the violent fights is amazing. I watched this first episode in dub and i plan to watch some episodes in sub aswell but the dub is actually pretty decent. This animation style really fits Berserk's dark world in my opinion and it would be really nice to see a full adaptation with a dark animation style such as this. |

| This is my second watch, and wow.. I wonder what I watched the first time, because I don't remember any of this.. I don't remember seeing Guts' recollection of the members of God-hand, him saying Griffith, his brand, the behelit(!!).. all of this in the first episode.. these things I remember seeing in the final couple of episodes.. The direction is so good.. I am also reading the manga again, and see that the writing for this episode took a short-cut to Behelit and didn't introduce Puck... and the swirl of dark souls haunting Guts also is done in such a way that they seem more like his hallucination than actual thing that exists, as we come to see later on in the story.. Very good direction.. Guts' emotions and the drama of this story are well-captured.. as I did in my first watch, loved the final freeze over the scene <3 ... I just love the post-credits commentary on preview of next episodes.. Gosh. |
