Ok so I recently started watching Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo and I just got to the fourth episode. It is all about the main character wanting to leave sakurasou because he doesn't like that everyone who lives there is more talented than him.

This is not the first time I have seen this plot setup. In fact it seems to be quite common in anime. The thing is that I have always found it pretty much impossible to relate to. Sure I understand that you can be jealous of your friends for a bit but to me that has always been about wanting to be just as talented. Not about wanting less talented friends.

This has bugged me since I ran into this setup. Am I just weird and this is actually a common feeling or is it merely bad writing. Could someone please give me a second opinion on this. That would be awesome ^^

Be sure to remember that this anime could have been written by someone in a completely different country and thus social environment to you, Given i have no idea where your from at this time but that is currently my only logical answer to your question ^.^, but it is at the same time understandable to a degree when it seems most people's first reaction to the question Hard or Easy? is almost always going to be easy so finding new friends is the obvious choice when compared to working exetremely hard to become more talented.

P.S. You are not weird i have never felt this way either : 3

I see. But I am not talking about the situations were you are in an obligation to be as good as your friends. Such as when peoples lives are on the line depending on your performance and the character feels like they are in the way or something. That I can understand.

I'm referring to the situations were there are just normal people who for some reason want to get away from their talented friends.

You are probably right in that it may be something cultural. We will need some more opinions on this ^^ worst case I'll have to track down a Japanese person and ask xD

P.S. I'm from Sweden btw ^^

I answered based on the assumption that they were everyday normal people x3 so my answer is still my belief at the moment, and yes that is my first choice, that it is cultural.

Ahh i see i am from America, Florida to be exact : )

Ok It was just the part with the hard or easy choice that you mentioned. Were you would have to chose between working hard or leaving. I was just wondering why someone would come to the conclusion that that was the case to begin with ^^

Because i don't think like most people xD so i come up with things that most wouldn't, and i meant that in the sense of everyday life i mean would you rather work or relax, or study or game? things like that just the general sense of "im not doing it if i don't have to", and "if i do have to, make it quick".-Houtarou Oreki, Hyouka

Haha yeah xD that's not really the way I think. I'm probably a bit more like Chitanda if we were to continue with the Hyouka references. I'll do anything which I find interesting ^^

Well yeah but in the episode he comes to the conclusion that he is going to feel terrible if he stays with them. Presumably after having given up on being equal to them. That is the part I can't really understand.

Well i have had that feeling before, i play a basketball for a travel team as in we practice and play in tournaments in the area and the occasional tournaments outside of state. A while ago i saw myself as the worst person on the team and that my other teammate blew me out of the water when comparing skill. I did decent when ever we played but compared to my other teammates i was like nothing. It made me feel like crap when ever i messed up, every once in a while i would get really frustrated and wanted to stop playing. But i got over it, but yeah it really sucks when you start to think "am i dragging the team down"

I personally have seen this situation many times over, within my own group of "friends" and other such teenagers. I am currently on a Robotics team filled with INCREDIBLY talented individuals, these kids are being offered internships, positions at universities and jobs already and they haven't even graduated high school. They are are all amazingly competent at school and within the robotics team. I personally feel like I am miles behind them in skills and abilities, enough so that I became insecure of my own talents. Because of this insecurity it's hard not to wish that the people that surround you weren't as talented as they are.

That being said the feeling of inferiority is a huge theme that is often explored again and again because of it's recurrence in everyone's life. Haven't you ever just looked at some particularly talented individual and honestly felt deep jealousy for their skills. Shows like Sakurasou just amplify those feelings and spreads them within a group of friends. It's such a common topic because everyone enjoys hearing that perseverance can pay off. Sakurasou just seems to go a bit deeper into it and explores the realism of failure, fate and bad luck. I don't believe it's bad writing, it's just a theme that has shown to be popular and so is introduced repeatedly (often badly though).
"There stood a high school boy, who for selfish reasons had twice beaten an elementary school girl unconscious, and had gotten all nihilistically worked up about it. Actually that's still me."

Hmm well I have of course felt jealousy. I can count up a few people that I know who I consider to be just plain better people than me. People who are more athletic, smarter and better friends. But I can't say that I have ever wished to not be around them because of this jealousy.

But if you say that you've felt this way yourself then indeed it is not bad writing. That I've never felt it doesn't mean that no one has felt it. It is probably as Hia says a cultural thing. Sweden is after all very different from Japan and it shows all the time in anime. Just the fact that Mashiro was able to ace the tests with just memorization is something that would probably never happen in a Swedish school.

@DensetsuNoBaka The "am i dragging the team down" feeling is not really the thing I was referring to. I was more referring to the jealousy. Feeling guilty for dragging a team down with me is luckily something I have also felt xD
