Which of my ideas do you think is correct?

I was thinking about Ghost Banri (see ln/manga/anime discussion topic) yesterday and I decided to make this poll, because I'm curious about what other people think. The question - as it's clearly in the title - is: "What is Ghost Banri?". I personally have three theories:

1. The Supernatural Theory: Ghost Banri really is a spirit/ghost/kami/whatever as described. He clearly defies physics, and he is trying to posses his old body, where the new Banri spirit dwells.
2. The Sci-Fi-ish Theory: The naming here is not really accurate but I wanted to counter point the previous one. The idea is that old Banri's personality is still living in part of Banri's brain, observing the world and he can think on of his own. This leads him to think he's a ghost, because while he can observe, he can't really control.
3. The Metaphorical Theory: In this version there is no living, thinking ghost Banri at all. Instead Banri has memories of the time before the accident, but only in his sub-concious part of his mind, but they are slowly bubbling back. Since describing this can be both hard and uninteresting from a writer's perspective, she choose to write it with the ghost-Banri metaphor.

Personally, I think #2 and/or #3 is true, but I'm not sure if we'll ever get confirmation for either of them.

What do you guys think? Why?

I personally think it is a metaphor for his past love and life, etc. I am far too tired and it is now Christmas day so I'm going to get some sleep, will elaborate tomorrow if I remember/could be bothered.

Heh - all of us chose metaphorical. While supernatural would be interesting, there isn't anything else in the story that lends itself to it. Sci-fi really isn't applicable here.

Though I really wondered at first if Takemiya was taking an excursion off into the supernatural, the more I work on this series the less it feels like that to me. With the exception of Banri's Ghost, the entire series is firmly grounded in real life, and on top of that the behavior of Banri's Ghost is very much like a walled-off portion of Banri's mind, all the way down to his occasional ability to "possess" the physical Banri.

I realized this morning that he can't be purely metaphorical, since at the end of book 3, when he does the full possession in the middle of the night for a few minutes, he clearly starts with saying "I have a body", meaning that he (at least believes that) did not have a body before. So Ghost Banri is a concious entity and not just a metaphorical one. So I would like to change my vote to #2, Banri actually does have a separate living thinking consciousness in his head.
(However the part of me, who read Umineko no naku koro ni and was an extreme fan of it would argue that since there was nobody there when he said that, there is no way to prove that he actually said that.)

I agree that he isn't purely metaphorical . . . but rather more like a split personality, with the "new" Banri on top by default.

Maybe he's the anti-Banri.
What if the Hokey Pokey is what it is all about?

After this episode, the anti-Banri is a better description. He is such an ass.

There are several names I'd like to call him! Rat-Bastard is one of the tamest!

We should make a list. I've never seen such a selfish character in a very long time. I just wish he'd go away and leave the new and improved Banri alone.

I think he's a ghost because I remember in the latest episode that Ghost Banri was saying something like making New Banri's life a living hell, and New Banri who was in deep thought in his room said "What was that". Not sure if Ghost Banri's presence has be felt, but maybe his dark presence is enough to bring bad events to New Banri.

Ghost-Banri can control weather and human emotions so far...so i assume banri is some kind of god which cant remember his true self or that ghost banri is a wraith with special powers...either way there should be a supernatural power to explain last episodes of anime

I don't think he was "controlling" things. He just put Banri under a curse, which made him have bad-luck in general. Banri's good nature briefly lifted the curse in the late afternoon, but in the long run, that only contributed to the issue at the extremely chilling cliff-hanger ending of episode 15. (Which, from what I understand, is the end of book 5... Three more books and 9 episodes to go...)

I love this story!

yeah, this Banri has the attitude to make lemonade from lemons. If it was the previous Banri he would have been crying in the corner.

well you know, you might have a change in your personality when you, you know.. die, and then forced to watch another person occupy your body and carry on with your life.

It's completely a metaphor, When Tada Banri lost his memories, they didn't vanish completely, rather his memories took place in his subconscious and weaken his subconscious, which lead to an inner conflict between his past and his present. This conflict was presented as ghost Banri to make it tangible for the audience, which made it so much more interesting, don't you agree?

I think it's something supernatural, especially in the final chapter when it allows him to recover the ring he had lost.
