As I've written before- I have an impression that most of the "anime girls" are produced by men for boys- even the "strong" girls like Sakura from Naruto are just men's imagination about what that character should be.
The same thing is with anime parings- usually "mr dumbbest" is sentenced to have harem of "lovely" girls or at least something who I'd call the slave. Most of the anime creators think that girl is happy enough when she just find a man- no matter how.
Luckily, on the other hand, we can find some examples of real partnership. Strong females doesn't have to be alone- sometimes they find real man with whom theiy can share their lives maybe not heroically but with style

My favourite one is Lafier& Jinto from BOTS- it was my first anime when not girl devoted everything for love. They both had something to lose- it was their mature decision to be together. Real love wihout flying pans

I agree, although it's also true for reverse harem shows like Earl & Fairy and Harukanaru. I think there are some decent relationships in shounen though, for instance, the girl and guy in Blue Gender. Sorry to mention this again, but I love Gatsu and Caska from Berserk. The two couples left at the end of Speed Grapher were also pretty good. Can't think of any others off the top of my head...

I feel like the common thing in shonen anime, where the leading female beats down the main character, is a poor way of trying to show that the girl is strong. A lot of the time, that same character is pretty weak-willed, at least compared to their male counterparts. Haruno Sakura from Naruto is the first that comes to mind, for me.

A lot of these women don't seem to have the same drive as the men they end up with. The men in shonen anime are famous for dreaming big, and having an unbreakable will. I don't see many instances where their love interest is able to match those traits.

Ewwww, quite right. :/ Or when they try to show that the girl is strong by pitting her against weak fodder characters...or only against other women...it just ticks me off...would it kill their egos if they could actually win against a decent opponent or something...? -___-;

Shounen, its hard to think of strong love interests. But in Crimson Hero, Nobara's in love while remaining cool. :) So is Katara from Avatar the Last Airbender, if that counts (although I don't really like her, I do admit she's pretty good for a female love interest). Erza from Fairy Tail is pretty cool, but I found that when she became more of a love interest (Gerard), her character was weakened, as if that would make her more attractive. :/

And yeah, don't even get me started on Naruto...xD'

Just kind of going off of this, I think the best love interest in Avatar the Last Airbender is Sokka and Tsuki. I mean, Tsuki is an amazing female warrior that can kick any guy's ass (especially Sokka's. Lol) but is still able to hold a very lovely relationship. What I liked about Avatar is that it didn't show females as being the weaker sex. I mean just look at Azula and Toph. They completely dominated in that show.

Another two relationships I love and find hilarious are Bulma and Vegeta and Goku and Chi-Chi from Dragonball Z. Bulma and Chi-Chi are two examples of very strong-willed and independent women who fall in love with, physically, much stronger and egocentric (at least in Vegeta's case) men but are totally able to dominate the relationship despite who their partners are. Vegeta and Goku aren't idiots either so it's not like those two women were paired with guys who were just all muscle. Also, there's Videl and Gohan from Dragonball Z as well. Videl follows in the same footsteps as Chi-Chi and Bulma in that she dominates the relationship she has with Gohan even though he's clearly the stronger of the two (and he's incredibly smart as well).

I think Toriyama kinda likes this trope. Bulma, Chi-chi, Videl, android 18... they wear the pants in the relationship with their husband. And in 18's case, she's also physically stronger than Krillin.
