One of the saddest images in Strawberry Panic is in the original opening credits. It's during the sequence when they do a wide shot of a character and then a closeup. The wide shot shows Chikaru walking by herself and the closeup shows her looking lost in thought but I can't help but think that she seems sad or disappointed. She then perks up and dons a smile for whoever is looking at the characters from the camera's perspective.

Is Chikaru putting on a happy face for her classmates while secretly harboring depression? I'm reminded of the Pagliacci joke from Watchmen. Where does Mother Figure Chikaru go when she is the one in need of a pair of boobs in which to cry? Kagome might be able to sense such sadness but there are some troubles to which a first year may be unable to relate. Teddy bear head pats only go so far.

I think she was the only emotionally stable character in the entire anime, honestly. I think she absorbs a lot of people's sadness and carries it and tries to turn it into positivity since she is a generally happy person.

While I agree with your assessment, I feel that one needn't be emotionally unstable to feel sadness. We've got Shizuma chasing Nagisa, Tamao chasing Nagisa, Yaya chasing Hikari, Hikari chasing Amane then back to Nagisa chasing Shizuma. No one is chasing after Chikaru and I would think that such a thought couldn't possibly make Chikaru happy.

She's got a gaggle of Lulim goslings to have fun with but who among us sincerely wishes never to have a special someone show an interest in you?
...and say that they want to spend time just with you?
...and say that they want to be yours?

It's possible that Chikaru doesn't want to worry her flock over things which aren't going to turn Astraea Hill upside down. I know that my mother kept me in the dark about certain things so that I could have a worry-free childhood. Perhaps Chikaru is doing the same.

Just in case anyone is wondering, I haven't completely lost perspective here. I know that this is a fictional series. :) Maybe I just need to shut up and write a fanfic so that everyone can enjoy my thoughts and ideas.

People don't normaly smile as their standard facial expression. I'm not sad, but im not smiling right now. If you're walking alone, unless you're thinking about somehting funny, you probably wouldn't be smiling. =\

However, i guess if it's shown that way in an anime or something, there's probably some meaning to it.

I doubt Chikaru herself would be sad about anything. True, no one is chasing after her, but i doubt if she wanted love she wouldn't easily be able to find it herself, she's one of the most looked up to girls in the school. It's much more likely it's someone elses problems bothering her, since she is the mother figure of the school for a lot of the girls.

Then again, interpreting it as a frown might not be right in the first place. she could be deep in thought, perhaps thinking of an ingenious scheme. (or what to dress Kizuna and remon up in next) :P

this is coming entirely from the light novels so it may not make sense for the anime, but it's possible she was plotting something or trying to work out a kink in a plot and was surprised to see someone standing there so she had to put on her normal mask so that no one suspects anything. they didn't really go into that angle of her in the anime though so who knows.

funny thing is i haven't seen the anime in almost two years and i remember this scene exactly. i guess she made a pretty big impression on me even before i read the novels and got into her character more.
