My favourite episode and studio of this OVA coincide nicely for episode 5, Working Through Pain by Studio 4C.

Runner up episode+studio, again tied together with episode 4 In Darkness Dwells and 6 Deadshot, both by Madhouse.

Episode 3, Field Test by Bee Train, felt the most in line with the movies, but didnt do much for me, visually or storywise.

Episode 5 was written by Brian Azzarello who wrote US graphic novel 100 Bullets, do check it out if you havent, its brilliant.

Studio 4C got my attention when The Animatrix came out (much better than this OVA in my opinion) and I've yet to see Tekkon Kinkreet or Genius Party but this studio are definitely on my radar now.

Really disappointed with I.G's episode, didnt look good at all to me.

Madhouse and episode 4 here, especially considering that 6 is my runner-up. I also dug 1, at least in terms of the animation and stuff considering it gave me that sketchy, vibrant animation style I love from Studio 4°C. Maybe not quite as well done as I would've liked it (although the backgrounds were pretty epic), but much more interesting than what was to follow. Production I.G.'s episode failed the hardest of the bunch. The writing was pretty atrocious for most of them, but not only were the conversations between the cops badly written in that one, they were super poorly acted as well. Episode 3 was also terribly boring. A golf tournament to benefit homeless people? I hate rich people...Not to mention James Bond called, it wants it's Q scenes back.

I'm still at a loss as to why they hired BeeTrain. All of their shows up until now have been subpar to mediocre, which was again reflected in their segment of the film.

I mean WB had a whole load of talents they could have hired in their stead. Gainax, BONES, Sunrise, KyoAni are just some to name a few. Maybe they ran out of money when they hired 4C, Madhouse and Ig and had to settle for something "cheaper".

Bee Train stepped up and finally answered that eternal question: What does Christian Bale look like in anime? Now we know, people. Now we know.

EDIT: And yeah Absolutely_Steve, I.G's episode was amazing in its fail-hardery.

Favorite: Episode 4 - "In Darkness Dwells"
Runner Up: Episode 5 - "Working Through Pain"

On a side note, Production I.G's episode was epic fail. Way to make me feel bad after wanting to watch this just because I.G was doing something in it.

It was hard to pin down my favorite episode since I think each of the last 3 episodes were very good for different reasons. Since Madhouse did 2 of those 3, I voted them for best studio.

As far as Production I.G.'s episode goes, I disagree. I'll acknowledge that the dialogue was pretty wooden and overall the content pales in comparison to eps 4-6, but I think the camerawork was very stylish, the character designs were good, and it captured the darker mood of Batman. I also loved how manly and awesome Batman was in ep 2 even if it was exaggerated a bit.

In my opinion episode 1 was the worst bit of animation I've seen in a long time in every way except for background animation. While the backgrounds may have been beautiful, the characters were the worst things I've seen in a long line of sloppy characters in shows of late. I was very disappointed since I've seen a number of 4C's previous work and I'm a fan of their studio. I thought the premise of the episode had potential with the word of mouth storytelling, but Batman was made out to be a complete failure in that episode.

The terrible animation in this episode might have biased me to the extent that I fell in love with episode 2 at first sight.

I picked Madhouse, since eps 4 and 6 were my favorites, 4 being my first on the list.

Madhouse for me as well, 4 being my favorite of the set, I prefer their animation style to the others.

My favorite was definitely episode 5- "Working Through Pain". I simply loved it.
The runner up would be episode 4- "In Darkness Dwells".

Seems I am alone here, voting for Production I.G.
Like always their dark animation is amazing and cool.

I enjoyed their episode (2) the most along with 5 from 4C. But since 4C also made the weakest (the first one), 4C got the last place, while Madhouse and BeeTrain share the second place together.

But to be honest: They were all great episodes (despite from 1, but 1 wasn't bad either), so actually I liked the work of all 4 studios.

4°C definitely. (I can't believe all the disrespect *tears*). Madhouse is second. Love 'em too. And I.G. disappointed. Bee Train gave about as much as I expected, maybe a little more (I'm sure that was because it was a short.)

Working Through the Pain was 4°C? No wonder it was my favourite. After that it was Feild Test. I've never heard of Bee Train, and I would love to check out some more of their animation.

Have I Got a Story for You would have to be my favourite of the bunch, and I'm pretty sure it was done by 4°C.

Think before you open your mouth

Actually IG is the one that likely hired BEE TRAIN considering how much tweening they did in the film

Episode 5, Working Through Pain, was definitely the best. It's fucking Studio 4C. Of course, their first segment wasn't all that interesting in comparison. I hated how Batman was depicted throughout, even if it was fictionalized.

I'd put both Production I.G's Crossfire and Madhouse's In Darkness Dwells(mainly for the style) tied for a close second, followed by Deadshot.

Bee Train was LOL. Why were they even involved?

Overall, though, as a Batman fan, it's not like this OVA was that great anyway. Mask of the Phantasm is still the best animated work, as far as Batman is concerned.

Favorite episode: Working Through Pain [Studio 4C]
Favorite studio: Madhouse [ep.4-6]

I really like the animation style of Madhouse, with Batman it was very '90s.

Here's how I rank the episodes, from best to worst:

- Episode 6 (Madhouse)
- Episode 5 (Studio 4C)
- Episode 1 (Studio 4C)
- Episode 2 (Production IG)
- Episode 4 (Madhouse)
- Episode 3 (Bee Train)

So, if we assign points... with first place receiving 6 points, and last place receiving 1 point...

Studio 4C: 9 points
Madhouse: 8 points
Production IG: 3 points
Bee Train: 1 point

This point system is somewhat unfair, though... since only two of the studios did multiple shorts.

Anyway, I consider Madhouse & Studio 4C the heavy hitters, regardless... but I will still say that Madhouse comes out a bit more on top.

Overall quite amazed of these semi related shorts. Action is mostly gritty & visceral, even the stoning felt "painful". Nice bg & osts. 5 & 4 are amazing. 1 was quite charming.

1: loved the dynamic animation, partly nostalgia to 4C's tekkon kinkreet style. Reinterpreted pov batman versions felt creative, like what-if batman was brutal.
2: Setup a much jumbled exposition but no payoff. Noir mood well done tho. Fire looked awkward.
3: Two gang boats had the most silly dialogue. "You broke him. u bought him." "You killed me" lol u still alive no? Batman outfit very detailed & slick. Cool EM bullet blocking.
4: dark action with lizard was very cool.
5: Bhusara/fakir Bhuddist enlightenment on pain had some amazingly thoughtful dialogue (more so than patlabor managed). Action also amazing.
6: Designs were nice. Silly rushing Deadshot but shootout still cool.

I only liked episodes 1 and 5 which were from Studio 4C. Episode 2 from Production IG had a great haunting atmosphere but still overall disappointing in the rest of the content. Rest I don't care about.
