I'm really glad I picked this up. It's been really good so far.

Who else started watching this on a whim and was pleasantly surprised? I know I'm not the only one. :3

It's a show that could of had been good but horrible execution wasted its potential.

Who am I to kid? If you ever thought a show with the name of "BODACIOUS Space Pirates" could be good, then you're delusional.

I agree the execution is not the best so far (my criticisms in Episode 6 are mainly concerned with execution), although I am still enjoying the anime and expect it to become better with time. But what does the word 'bodacious' (a mildly ok interpretation of the word mouretsu, still better than the word 'extreme' that ANN uses) have to do with anything?

I'm finding this to be a no-nonsense show told entirely in the 3rd person. The way it's done is quite unusual but I'm finding that the gaps in the storyline are being filled in as the series progresses. In a way, it's like reading one long novel. The lack of fanservice makes the show feels natural. Obviously, Chiaki's tsundere needs to be there to appeal to the crowds but even that feels totally in place and not "forced" or done for the sake of it.

On the one hand, I can understand how "boring" this show is but for some reason, I am really liking it so far.

I wouldn't call it unexpectedly good
after all made by guy who also made Stellvia or Shingu so if you seen and liked those two... you know what to expect here - more focus on characters and interaction, less on some useless battles with lights everywhere and whole universe going BOOOOM!
and yes I like it's pacing :)

The reason I picked this series up was because there was "pirates" in the title.

I was expecting some stupid show with fanservice and whatnot, since there were so many girls. But I was pretty surprised when that isn't the show at all. I'm impressed and probably why I'm still watching. It's like reading a novel... haha.

Yeah same, its like WTF, I was hoping Marika would at least see that her decision would have consequences but no (not yet hopefully). The pirating isnt "pirating" its just putting on a show for customers. It bothers me that its like that. I hope they introduce real pirates sooner or later. Ones that actually go pirating. I also find it funny that the need a letter of marque from the government to "pirate". Its apparent that they are entertainers. Why do they need a letter of Marque?

Another thing that gripes me is the crew. They accept Marika like it was nothing. There is no one that is even slightly against it (not even Mr. Cyborg, which just by looking at him you would guess he would be opposed. Little miss "captain" as turned your ship into estrogen haven and yet you do nothing?). Which is unfathomable. What would of made the story more interesting would be if they made Marika gather her own crew and have them take over. Kinda like Luffy did. Luffy built his own crew instead of taking over another.

But I like how they explain all the little things, like the electronic warfare/mechanics of it all and all that stuff from previous eps. That's entertaining. The girls are cute I'll give the anime that. Even tho I still don't like most of the characters including Marika LOL

But why am I even bothering trying to expect stuff out of a moe space pirates show. I can't even answer that myself XD

Marika is new to the whole pirating thing, considering this it makes sense they would start off with simple jobs with minimal to no risk instead of rushing into the "hardcore" stuff. This fits perfectly in with the style of the show and was to be expected after watching the first few episodes.

As for the need of the Letter of Marque, well it basically gives them the right to perform actions which would otherwise be illegal for them. For instance in real life the letters were given to people allowing them to raid other vessels from foreign nations, they would then split their profits with their government.

Why wouldn't they accept her? In order to keep their license their new captain must be a direct descendent of their former captain, and Marika is his only known descendent. So they need her to be captain to keep their license. Marika is also shown to be a hard worker, willing to learn, quite clever, a talented pilot and simply her excitement about being a pirate would make it easier for her to be accepted.

As for her creating her own crew instead of taking over one, while this would have been interesting it would have made zero sense as she lacked any experience in pirating and didn't even know of their continued existence until approached about being captain, it would go against the style of the story. There is also the stipulation of the pirating license that they must regularly perform jobs or they will lose it, this would require an actual experienced crew to pull off.

Tatsuo Sato directs the series and you find it unexpected that it's so good ? Haven't you watched Stellvia, Nadesico, Shigofumi, Cat Soup etc... ? It was my most wanted new series of the season (along with Nisemono - black hole of boringness - gatari strangely) and it delivers just as expected.

Wow great stats man, you're a genius ! Not. Sorry to break this to you but it happens to each and every series on MAL, sometimes in much larger proportions. It's even a wonder how episode 7 had half as many comments as episode 1, generally we're down to a third or a quarter of comments by episode 7/8. It's a very comforting stat on the contrary, it means that people had average expectations for this series (due to them not knowing Sato's past directions I guess) and quite a lot of them still watch it now despite it not being about miniskirts (and barely even pirates or at least what people imagine space pirates to be).

In every age, in every place, the deeds of men remain the same.

Well, it's quite nice to watch I have to say ... average - yes, brainless - probably and bit boring - certainly. But it's not bad to watch a show like that once in a while, so you can appreciate the good ones even more. And it's not that horrible, just average.

For me this show is a let down. I was expecting something more from "pirates" and what i i get is some performance with people going " Omg it's the pirates, I am so excited". No Space battles or anything so far not counting that electronic warfare . Stellvia looked more childish but was more interesting for some reason it got some kind of plot. Here they just go from one "job" to another. I must agree with saying that this show is just average. I'm surprised to see that Rinne no Lagrange have worse score than this and that after 9 episodes I'm still expecting something worth seeing in Bodacious Space Pirates.

Anyone saying this show is boring or stupid has probably not watched Star Trek or Battlestar Galactica in their lifetimes. Or read up about naval history and warfare, including the Aubrey-Maturin novels.

Those expecting exciting action "on pronto" or full-on service from this series will have to find their adrenaline fix elsewhere; the miniskirts are just window dressing.
I play, the haters lose.

How exactly does Marika make it an "estrogen haven"? Even before she joined as captain, three of the primary crew were women. Not to mention, the entire crew seems to respect and get along well with her mother, Blaster Ririka.

I kinda feel you're being a tad sexist here. Just because they're pirates [or as you may say, "pirates"] doesn't mean they have to be all manly and stuff.

Im quite dissapointed the "Pirating" turned out to all be a sham! But it looks like it's getting more serious as we progress, so I'll stick to it. I actually quite like the pace to! Im a huge fan of Slice of Life animes so slow pacing doesn't really annoy me UNLESS the show is boring. This show is doing things that keep me interested, but I think it had alot more potential. Im hoping "Illegal" pirating/pirates becomes an introduced concept and that we see some REALLL fighting! It's starting to crop up with the rouge ships from the princess's country, lets see how this turns out!

So far though, the show has WAY exceeded my expectations! I was just expecting moe, fanservice but I got a surprise! It's actually quite thought out and interesting ^_^

If I get more hardcore astronomy and science references in here (as in not just mentioning fancy things like proto-stars, black holes, and supernova, but utilizing the physics behind such phenomena as plot devices), then this series will instantly achieve 9 status from me, and becomes a rare contender for the elusive 10.

I think the pacing is perfect; such well thought out and clever space battles could not be executed with a fast-paced mindless action show (not that those can't be good.) I mean the directors, in that one episode where the club's training flight got attacked; they could have just said that their cruiser had some sort of secret laser and thus they could return fire. But no, they went through the all this trouble: maximizing the reflective of a solar sail, changing it's shape (probably making it parabolic) so that the star's rays are focused and blind the attacking craft. Not only was that smart and completely within plausibility, but just as entertaining as watching huge beams being fired from cannons.

Top Tier Anime.

Mouretsu Pirates is shaping up to be one of the best anime series this season at this point. The amount of detail put into this show is incredible and it is not afraid to dive deeper into the issues.

The setting is interesting and the political intrigue is a nice addition as well.

I can see why some people would dislike this, though, as this is probably not the action trip they expected and it's helpful to have a longer attention span when watching this show compared to others.

Average - No, Brainless - NO, and Boring - Probably. Anyone who attempts to ridicule an anime as being boring, however, clearly cannot appreciate the finer points of anime. Maybe I'd let it slide if we were talking about Shukufuku no Campanella, where nothing important ever happens, but I guess most intellectual anime will be called boring by some. I can't find an anime like this that has aired within the last 3-5 years, so average would be a bad thing to call it if you don't like it. The only disappointing thing for me is that it's scored so low.

Its pacing deserves a medal.

I am considering picking up this title. I was instantly drawn to it when the season began back in january and began watching the first episode then too but it was around 1 am and i began yawning so i fell asleep instead. However, I recently dled the first episode so I atleast am going to watch that. :3 I like seeing the praise you all have given it here. And Cat Soup was dkjhkhaksGOLDENkfdk!! So hearing that gives me much hope.

Unexpectedly good is a little too much. There isn't anything there to say that this show is very good. Not bad but nothing much ether.
Just because a show isn't about fanservice it doesn't mean it's automatically awesome and just because a show has fanservice doesn't mean it can't be awesome. It feels like some people feel the need to praise a show simply because it has no fanservice.

The problems this show has are many. It's such a strange one though since the makers threw elements in it from all over the place that am little bored to start talking about all of them since it needs a lot of analyzing.
Generally the idea of having schoolgirls and funny looking people on one hand while trying to play the more mature when you get into technical details and stuff and also trying to build characters but never managing to make you really feel for them is quite a strange one and makes the show feel not very thought threw.
The idea of throwing a lot of crazy elements but then not make a crazy show but a slow adventure show is not making the best viewing experience. It' like someone bought materials that make for a good fast-food experience but tries to cook them like luxury food and possibly making them taste worse than if they had been cooked like fast-food.

You could say that this show went slowly trying to build characters and yet if Marika died in the next episode i don't feel like it would make me feel much. And she's the one supposed to be more human and close to the viewer than almost any other character. They kind of failed there because we see characters but not really see them. Hell if any from her crew died i wouldn't even raise an eyebrow.

Still the show has a certain potential that makes people like me who don't expect crazy action all the time watch it even though i know that more likely nothing really exciting will happen(and i don't mean that just about action but ether about drama or plot) but the hope is still there because the stage is set but the screenwriters seem like they are reluctant to play.

Is it awful and unwatchable? No it isn't. I never screamed that i want my 25 minutes back, it can be a nice pass time but it needs to raise it game if it wants to be anything significantly good.

Well,I got some time.....
When I 1st heard about this anime,I was F-ing happy to see a new space adventure anime was gonna air (mainly because it's the closes I can get to having my long held dream of seeing a Star Wars anime).I didn't give a single fuck if it was gonna be infested with pantyshots or actually have a god damn story,as long as it be entertaining to me.........................oh god.
So far, there's 13 episode out,but I just fell out of it after episode 9 (I didn't drop it...yet..possibly).I thought at 1st the studio was gonna take their time with this & choose to wait for the entertainment. As you can tell,I have yet to find it.I'll probably get back into it later, but for now One Piece is the only pirate anime for me.
I'm not gonna fully state all my problems or likes with this anime,I'm just gonna say,it's not "Unexpectedly good" for me.
My Devianart

Oh & Space Brothers is still the best anime ever,in my opinion.Even when competing with Attack on Titan.

From reading comments, it seems to me:

- If you were expecting ships to be boarded, crap to be blown up, and people killed for their valuables, you don't like it.

- If you were interested by the plethora of girls, you probably like it, unless there's not enough fanservice for you.

- If you didn't really have any expectations, you probably like it. Especially if you liked the director's previous works.

I admit, I fall into the third group. I only started watching it because it had both space and pirates in the name, and I thought the idea of a young girl as captain was kind of cute. I didn't really have any of the preconceptions about pirates that a lot of people seem to (One Piece and PotC are not the be all end all of pirates), so I readily accepted the idea of them being, basically, privateers. They should have named it Bodacious Space Privateers, and maybe people wouldn't have been so annoyed by it not meeting their preconceptions... but then it would have had to deal with people going, "WTH is a privateer?" *lol*

It has a slower, character driven pace, and characters that aren't paper cutouts. The piracy as a business was well explained, at least imo, and I think it's an interesting take on a rather tired idea. I love all the little details they put into the show, to give the world depth and weight, rather than just being about who they are going to fight next. :3

They need to rename it to Schoolgirl with Spaceships.

Not that I think the show is bad, but it's not pirating.
