So how do you prefer to watch your anime? With sub titles or the english version? I personally like the subs way better. The voices sound better...don't know why, maybe because I can't actually understand them. I also think that most of the time the subbed version is closer to the original dialogue, it isn't as censored. My thoughts, now I wanna hear yours.

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!!!!!
By bringing this topic to Anime-Chat you have brought war to our(somewhat) peaceful land lol. Well i lean both ways some animes i like to watch dubbed and others subbed. I totally agree that crappy dubbed voice acting can ruin an anime but to me some sound better in english.

I can hardly handle dubbed anime anymore, I just find the voices so annoying most of the time. Tried watching Bakuretsu Tenshi dubbed... so not happening. Meg's, Amy's, Kyohei' voices just didn't work.

I must admit to keep all of you on the *shudder* dubbed side happy that I love watching Claymore in english way better, more emotion and excitement. I think I also watched Soul Eater in english, that was pretty good.

subbing is normally better as the original voice actors chosen portray the character better than any American they pull off the street while occasionally they strike gold they generally find duds. For example the chrono crusade series dubbed butchered the main character chrono by giving him the most in apropriate voice actor, there are many examples were it looks as if the western companies didnt really care who they got.

i watch most of my anime through netflix so i watch whatever is given to me sometimes dub sometimes sub but i don't believe it matters all that much unless theres a huge difference with voice actors
but i guess i usually prefer dub because it's the language i speak but i can still enjoy sub

When I first started watching anime I would have said dub because it was in a language I knew well but after I gained some experiance with both sub and dub I realized that sub is better because it's the original. Also it's not really censored as much and now I know some parts of another language. So I would definitely say I prefer sub. Some anime that I think have good dubs are bleach and code geass.

Subtitles. Definitely. I used to prefer dubbed, but some of the English versions are just so terrible(like Vampire Knight...)!!
And I don't really think the English voice actors can really portray the emotions like they can in the original. I mean, some characters who seem really cool or whatever in the original can come across completely different when their voices change(one example is Misa from Death Note).
And in some anime, you actually have to know the language to understand some jokes or things that charaters do to understand whats going on. For example, I really don't know how they could dub a scene where the characters are playing Shiritori (Japanese syllable game) or something like that.
Okayyyy well I think I made my point ^^ bye!!

Sub all the way here, I personally hate dub because it sounds funky and weird. Anime is Japanese so i think it sound stay that way. Plus it totally sounds better that way anyway.

Imo , it depends on the level of the plot.

If the plot is fairly complicated and I want to use most of my concentration understanding it, I'll usually watch it dubbed (Death Note, Code Geass,Durarara)The dub also has to be decent awesome, of course.
But if i want a quick easy to understand plot, something with less twists and whatnot I'll prefer subs.

Also, if I started an anime in subs and learn that there are dubs, I'll keep watching it in subs. And if i start an anime in dubs I won't simply switch to sub.I get used to the voices on the first episode.

In short...I'm Neutral.

I started watching anime in dubbed since I was a kid but when I was in highschool and started watching anime I switched to subbed because I believe that it would be the smarter chioce, and I still believe that. So the reasons I prefer subbed is

  • Because there is a limit to dubbed anime, only a small portion of anime that come out are even dubbed. And for airing anime you have to be up to 100 episodes behind. That also includes talking to people who watch subbed(which is the majority) you would be really far behind, unable to talk about the same things.
  • I can understand Japanese through watching a lot of subbed anime, and it helps you understand everything better especially jokes. Learning Japanese actually helped me in school with my memory, I went from Cs and Ds to As.
  • It is the original, and I like to watch all foreign movies and shows in their original launguage, and most of the time the English voices don't sound right to me.
  • There is a long list of things that are impossible to translate into english because of their need to provide background info(including, songs, puns, sayings, celebrities and other famous people, dialects, old stories etc).
There could be more, but this is off the top of my head.

My overall opinion is I watch subs, but I don't care what anybody else watches. I believe that if you know the facts and the pros and cons of both then it's your choice.
