Am I the only one who noticed that in C³ there were some... artsy(?) moments that looked like something only Shaft would do? This also seems to be the case here... or is it just me?

Not this shit again.
Long story short, The Director Oonuma Shin, once worked for SHAFT. He directed a few animes under SHAFT.

Just click his name in the staffs..

So, he's not "trying" to "copy" shaft, his style originated when he was in Shaft.

Exactly. He's not trying to "copy" Shaft, he essentially IS Shaft under a different name.

Can't wait for Studio Trigger to produce something, then we can see the cries of people complaining that they're trying to copy Gainax.

Tonight... we are young... so let's set the world on fire, we can burn brighter, than the sun...

Even if the director had nothing to do with SHAFT, they've come up with some very good ideas, genuine innovations in how the visual medium can be used to tell a story. If someone's worked out a better way of doing something, other people using such techniques is just common sense, that's how progress is made, people seeing further by standing on the shoulders of giants.

If directors can use each other's ideas, without being accused of "copying", then everyone gets more ideas to deploy, and we get better anime as a result.

Yes, because only SHAFT can do "artsy" stuff. Everybody else is a blatant ripoff and cheap imitation.

Is Shinbo trying to copy Ikuhara? Was Ikuhara copying Anno? Was Anno copying David Lynch? Was David Lynch copying Maya Deren? Was Maya Deren copying Dali? etc etc

Leaving aside any kind of rip-off accusations, Silver Link has showed more than enought that, like Shaft, are not very good in producing animation of good and constant quality compared to most studios out there (say, KyoAni or Sunrise), so the "artsy" style is used as an attempt to disguise it, eventually becoming an unique trademark.

People don't think about doing research first, and I'm one of them. :P

That's quite the biased opinion disguised as fact.

Leaving Director Oonuma Shin aside. Is it wrong for any other anime studio to become artsy??Just because shaft is innovative when it comes to anime you can't say that any other studio has no right to do the same & if they do this then they will become a "copycat".

Please correct me, then. I do like their style, but from the shows I have seen, I think there are times where they cannot make animation constant, and when they do, it shows QUALITY (specially in Silver Link´s case). I have noticed some in Tasogare, too.

I would actually welcome it if more studios experimented with the visuals, there are so many possibilities to stitch together a scene, you don't necessarily have to stick to showing what is happening at the given moment.

So just because an anime uses some unusual camera angles, its automatically copying SHAFT?
