"Leave Soots in charge," Alexi says. "He's reliable enough." Cyn nods and stands. "Should I bring anything?" "Just the usual. We'll find 'em." "Brink coming?" "Nah. He doesn't need to find out. But if he does, Bring him along anyway." ----- As soon as Alan is on its back and secure, it takes off. Zaine sits cross-legged, holding his ankles, and mumbles to himself. "Freakin' bird. I would've just walked up, but no. Gotta throw Zaine." He looks to Alan. "Hey. What do suppose it wants from us anyway?"

"Good," Alexi says. "Then we don't need to explain anything." She walks out of the room to grab her supplies and ready for the search. "Suit up," Cyn says. "We're heading out now. Don't wanna be left behind." He taps Brink's shoulder with his hand as he walks by him. "Be ready for anything!" He calls back as he vanishes into his room. ----- Zaine cautiously stands up. All around them is wasteland. The remains of what once could have been lively rivers, half-dead trees, and scrub brush and rocks are the only features that stand out on the ground. "There's nothing here. Where are we going?" Zaine says, mostly to himself. He reaches up and grabs his pendant, absently stroking it.

(Oh my god LOL!) - Cyn chuckles to himself at Brink's comment. (Don't worry Brink; you're not my type.) -Time Lapse- Alexi, Cyn, and Brink stand in a small grove just on the edge of the forest. She moves the scanner in her hand in front of her so the screen shows the desert in front of them. "Anything?" Cyn asks, hopeful. Alexi shakes her head. "Nothing. Their trail ends here. If they went out into the desert, they'll be pretty hard to track. The sand has been blown around, so there won't be visible tracks, and the scanner can't pick up anything." "Too bad they don't weigh a lot." Cyn says. "Then that thing would have no problem finding their tracts in the sand." ----- Zaine looks straight ahead. "Wherever we're going, I hope we can get back to the others. I don't think it was a good idea to separate us; especially since we don't know the planet."

Alexi nods. "True." After a pause: "Well, shall we go look for them?" Cyn shrugs. "We have enough supplies to last a while; might as well." ----- The flight on the creature only lasts a couple minutes. The lion bird lands heavily on the sand, jostling its passengers. It then stands straight up, dumping Zaine and Alan off its back, and takes back to the skies. Zaine stands up and brushes himself off. "Well that was uncalled for..." He helps up Alan, then looks around. The creature let them off in front of an old stone building, the stone worn from years of sand and wind. Inside the building are stairs that lead down into the earth. (This looks like a crypt. The entrance of a tomb...) Zaine thinks to himself as he inspects the entrance.

Alexi nods. "Alright then, let's go." The party of three sets out in the desert, unknowingly going in the same direction as Zaine and Alan had only a few hours before. ----- Zaine stands there a moment, thinking. (I don't have a torch or something to light the way...If it's dangerous or the floor has fallen away, that'd be the end of us...) Zaine shrugs. "It'll be a hell of a lot cooler down there. Let's go." Zaine and Alan descend using the stairs, careful as the light starts to fade.

(LOL. Zaine. Seems dangerous, let's go!) Brink walks over to a large rock. On one of the sharp edges a blue piece of cloth is caught. "Hey, I think they were here." Brink examines the cloth. "It is from a very thin material, like Alan's priestess garb."" -- Alan holds Zaine's hand tightly. "It is cooler. I feel a small breeze. Maybe there is water."

Cyn looks at the rock. "That rocks was moved recently too. And by something huge." "Maybe they were attacked by something?" Alexi says, the scanner in her hand. "Whatever it was, it's prints are still here. Looks like it was some kind of bird by the feet." She takes a minute to scan the area. "But it flew away a while ago; there's only some by the rock and then nothing." "Alright," Cyn says. "That means, they either were taken or were eaten..." ----- Zaine and Alan keep descending until they reach flat ground again. In front of them is a longer corridor, scarcely light by torches that rest along its walls. Zaine runs his hand along the wall, picking up a bit of moss and moisture as he does so. "It's cooler down here. Completely different from the desert above." Continuing along the corridor, they find that there are several branching tunnels off to each side; some lead farther down, others lead off in all directions, but only a few are lit.

"Well," Cyn says. "What do we do now?" ----- Zaine shakes his head. "No. It'll be better if we stick together." After a few more minutes of walking, the corridor ends and opens into a huge room. Pillars line the walls to the right and left and a huge statue of a sits in the middle, nearly touching the high ceiling. The room ringed with torches and bowls of fire rest on the floor along a walkway. Zaine follows the path until he reaches the statue. "This looks just like that creature we flew in on..."

"Right," Alexi says. "And where do you expect us to go? We don't know which way they've gone." ----- "Maybe," Zaine says. "The creature did seem intelligent and it didn't appear to want to cause us any harm..." He looks around as he speaks, noticing the pathways that lead off to the right and left, and a grand archway that continues forward under the earth behind the statue. "We should look around."

"She's only saying that it could be miles away by now and that we'd never catch up of that were the case," Cyn says, as if explaining to a small child. "Besides, I doubt that it went very far." "How can you be so sure?" Alexi asks, clearly doubtful. He shrugs. "Call it a hunch." ----- "Don't wander off too far. This place may be trapped so be careful." Zaine warns her as he starts to wander off towards the big archway. It's pillars are far more elaborate than the others, decorated with what must have been the peoples' faith and legends. The carvings are done with extreme accuracy and detailed; great care was taken while making them. He traces a few drawings with his fingers. "Amazing," he whispers.

Alexi shrugs. "Alright then. Let's go." ----- "Some carvings," Zaine calls back. "They're pretty elaborate. Probably tells about their culture and heritage..." He looks at the other pillar, which has also had pictures and writings carved onto it. "It's too bad I can't read this. I'd like to know what it says," he says mostly to himself.

The three walk aimlessly forward for a long while. The sun beams down on them from above, raising the temperature a couple degrees. "Man," Cyn says. "I wonder just how far they went..." "Hopefully," Alexi says. "Not too much farther. This heat is pretty unbearable." She looks up at the sky. "How about we get just one little cloud to cover that thing up? What do ya think sky, can you manage?" Cyn chuckles to himself. "If only it would listen to your pleas." "I know! How inconsiderate." ------ "Let's keep going," Zaine says. "I wanna see what's beyond this arch. It's probably something important since it was built like this." He and Alan walk through the archway, coming into a another long corridor. The high ceiling continues through the passage. As they walk, Zaine looks at the walls. They are just as meticulously carved as the pillars, the attention to detail even finer here than before. "I bet these tell the story of the people who lived here. Their whole history is probably written down on these walls..." Zaine says thoughtfully.

"AH! It's too damn hot!" Alexi says. "Cyn make it cooler..." Cyn chuckles again. "If only it were that simple, I'd have done it already." ----- Zaine takes the device Alexi gave him out of his pocket. "This stupid hunk of scrap isn't gonna help us here." The two step into the next room. This one looks like a huge dining hall. Three long stone tables run from on end of the room to the other, each lined by chairs on both sides. Zaine gasps at the sight before him. Dishes and trays of food remain on the table, their contents frozen in time. But it is the people, who sit frozen in their chairs, that caused Zaine to gasp. The people are all still and the same color as the stone table at which they sit. Each has a different expression on his or her face; some were frozen in mid-sentence, others mid-bite of their meals. "Do you think...?" Zaine starts unable to finish. He reaches out and touches one, cautiously, but it crumbles to sand at his touch. "What happened here?"

Her arms around his neck, she looks up at Brink with a sweet expression on her face and says, "Now make it stop doing that...please?" Cyn facepalms. (She's been in the heat too long...) ----- The man on the other end of the room laughs. It's a cold and mirthless laugh. "Where'd you find this one Zaine? The fleurin saag?" He laughs again. "Come out where we can see you." Zaine says. A man dressed in red and black steps out from behind a pillar on the far end of the room. His hair is also red and long, tied back in a loose ponytail by a golden band. He stops walking towards them, leaving about ten chairs' distance between them. From this distance Zaine can make out the tattoo that rings his neck, making it seem like his head was sewn back on and can see no visible weaponry. "Who are you? Why do you know my name?" "I know many things. But, first, allow me to introduce myself. I am known as Croisant Crux." The man bows to them both in turn. "Please refer to me as Crux." |

Alexi takes his jacket with a confused expression on her face. "What am I supposed to do with this?" she asks, squinting her eyes at it. "I...can't..." She starts to fall, but Cyn catches her. "Alright there Captain," he says. "Let's get you some water, and see if we can cool you down a bit..." He hands her his canteen (hers is empty) and she drinks from it, thanks him, then passes out. He just sighs. "What am I gonna do with you?" he says to himself. Cyn hands Brink back his jacket, then puts Alexi on his back so the three may continue walking. ----- "My!" Crux says happily. "How polite this one is. She could be a keeper Zaine." Zaine says nothing. "Of course, she won't be living much longer anyway, so make the most of it while you can!" "Shut up." Zaine says irritably. "Explain yourself. What are you doing here? These people--" "These people are dead Zaine." As if to emphasize this, he punches a statue and it shatters into dust. "It's a shame really; they did not see it coming. It would have been much more entertaining if they had looks of horror on their faces instead of...those expressions."

Cyn chuckles again, almost guiltily. "Yeah. She was never in hot environments while we were traveling growing up so she's never gotten used to it." ----- Zaine shakes his head. "No. But he isn't someone we can trust Alan. He's evil." Crux acts hurt. "Zaine. You mean you don't remember the fun times we had together? You wound me!" He pretend to take a dagger to the chest and staggers backward. "Stop messing around." Crux straightens up. "Yes, yes. You're right. No point wasting time. Have to get this show on the road before she shows up and ruins things for us. There'd have been no point in having Anzu bring you here otherwise." He runs a hand through his hair before continuing. "Alrighty then. Zaine, give me your amulet." Zaine stares at him and his outstretched hand. "No." "Think this through Zaine. I don't want to hurt you." Zaine reaches up and grabs a hold of the amulet around his neck. "There's no way you're getting this." Crux shakes his head. "A true Keeper indeed. Your parents would be proud."

Cyn nods. "Her old man took me in when I was little. Gave me a home. Since he's been gone, I've been looking out for her. Of course, that's a hell of a lot easier said than done." ----- "You would do well to keep your mouth shut little girl before you get hurt." Crux says maliciously. Zaine steps in between Alan and Crux, sword in hand. "You're not getting my amulet and that's that." Crux sighs. "I had hoped it wouldn't come to this, but it seems I have no choice. You will not listen to reason." "You're not very reasonable." "Very well then." Faster than Zaine could follow, Crux produced a blade from his sleeve and hurled it at Zaine. He just barely managed to avoid having the blade sink into his shoulder, though it cut a gash in his left arm as it whizzed past. Withing that time, Crux had lunged forward, armed with a set of long knives, ready to slice Zaine's throat. Had Zaine not brought his sword up on instinct, he would be dead. "Good!" Crux says. This close, Zaine can see the blood lust in his eyes. "Kavardan blood still flows within you." Crux pushes against Zaine's sword, knocking him backwards a few steps. "You may yet turn out to be the warrior your father was."

"You have no idea..." Cyn says. ----- "Ah, I'm sorry miss." Crux says sweetly. "You seem to be lost, yes? Shall I explain it to you then?" He lunges at Zaine again, this time going for a blow to the stomach. Zaine dodges and retaliates with a slash of his own to Crux's shoulder but it never connects. "You see, Zaine here is a part of an ancient race that has been a pivotal part of this galaxy's history for a long time now." Crux throws a knife at Zaine to distract him then punches him in the gut causing him to stagger. "His parents were higher-ups in the Kavardan government before the planet got destroyed nearly two centuries ago." Zaine attempts to cut Crux once more, but he easily dodges it. Zaine continues to slash at him while he speaks, all the while Crux gracefully moves out of the way of Zaine's blade. "You see poppet," -slash- "Kavardans were and still are" -slash- "a rather war-like race. They seek to take -slashand gain as much as possible before" -slash- "their miserably little lives end. They spent decades bending other races and planets to their will" -slash- "with their superior technology and weaponry." -slash- "This gave them many enemies." -slash- And when you have many enemies, over time," -slash- "you tend to become paranoid." He catches Zaine's sword in between his two knives and looks at Alan, a feral joy in his eyes. "Are you following this poppet?"

"Hmm." Brink nods. -- "So, what does this have to do with Zaine's amulet? And how could he be Kavardan if he is from Phanphos?" Alan questions more worried about Zaine than hearing the answer. She fingers the tips of one of her Sai. Tempted to distract Crux.

Cyn points to a building off in the distance. "Assuming I'm not seeing things, there's a building over there we can rest in for a bit." he quickens his pace at the thought of being out of the sun. "And who knows? Maybe those two are in there right now, staying out of the sun." ----- Crux smiles fiendishly at her, paying no attention to Zaine, whom he kicks aside like he would a stone. "You want to play with me poppet?" He points to her sai with his knife. Zaine tries to come at him again, but Crux slash at his arm and connects, creating a long red gash up Zaine's right arm. He turns back towards Alan. "Remember that the Kavardans are paranoid. If they should be wiped out in a war or through disease, who should carry on their legacy? How would they be remembered as the valiant race they are? No. They took precautions to ensure they would not be forgotten." He laughs, cold and heartless. "Pitiful. They knew their end was coming. So they did what any would do: ensure their survival. They gave certain 'pure' members of the Kavardan race bits and pieces of the Kavardan legacy. They total five in all." He reaches into his pocket and pulls out two rings and a large diamond shaped pendant. "These are three of those pieces." Zaine stares at Crux in disbelief.

"I wouldn't doubt it. Let's get out of this heat." Brink walks into the building. -- "I never "play". I don't have much time as it is butI would gladly waste it doing the right thing and protecting my friend. So yeah, let's "play"." Alan draws both her Sai out from their sheath. A determined expression smears her face.

Cyn and Brink arrive at the mouth of the entrance to the temple. Cyn whistles. "This place is something. Wonder how far it goes down?" ----- "Alan! Don't!" Zaine says. Crux chuckles and slides the rings onto his fingers and the pendant finds its place on his neck. "How honorable. But, you misunderstand me. Zaine is not the only 'pure' Kavardan left alive. I have every right to the legacy just as he does; just a she." He says 'she' with a fair amount of disgust. "I am only doing what must be done. The pieces must come together again. If Zaine does not wish to fulfill his role as Keeper then I shall do it for him!" Crux throws three knives with deadly accuracy at Alan, then quickly lunges at Zaine. Zaine blocks, then brings up his sword for another slash, but Crux is too quick. He sinks one of the knife blades into Zaine's right shoulder, then kicks him away leaving the blade.

"Alrighty then! Let's go." Cyn says happily, still carrying the unconscious Alexi on his back. Brink and Cyn head down into the stairwell, trying to be careful in the dark. "This brings me back... Hey, how far do you think these stairs go?" ----- Zaine sits against the wall, his right arm hanging limp by his side. (Damn it!) He stands up using the wall for support. Crux laughs madly now, not noticing the cut or pain. "Sorry poppet, but I don't have time for you." He watches her for a moment, then steps back towards Zaine. Zaine switches his sword to his left hand, preparing to fight again. Crux chuckles when he sees Zaine. "A true Kavardan warrior. Resolved to fight until his last. Perhaps I underestimated your character." Zaine laughs a little too, though there is no humor in it. "Maybe you're right." He takes up his stance. "But you're still not getting my amulet."

Brink and Cyn reach the entrance hall Zaine and Alan had entered some time ago. Again Cyn whistles at the sight. "That's some statue. Would hate to meet that beastie in real life." ----- Zaine winces as she helps him but he decides to let her. Crux watches them for a moment. "Must be nice..." He takes out a full set of knives - four for each hand - and stands there a second longer. "But I can't let you leave here with the amulet!" He flings the knives at Alan and Zaine in quick succession. Zaine raises his sword in time to block four of the incoming knives. Two knives miss their mark completely and sheathe themselves into the wall beside of Alan's face. Another bounces off the wall and falls to the ground. Crux smiles in satisfaction. "A true warrior indeed."

Cyn stays quiet and listens. "Fighting." He sets Alexi down carefully then pulls out his gun and a knife. He motions for Brink to go right. ----- Crux pulls out a gun and points it at Alan. Keeping the gun trained on Alan, he walks towards them. Zaine shakes his head, dropping his sword. "No, it's alright Alan. I should have--" "You should have just given me the amulet while you had the chance." Crux says. He's standing right in front of them now. "I'll be taking my knives back now." He pulls the knife out of Zaine's shoulder with his free hand and then the one from his abdomen. "Let's not forget about this shall we?" He rips the amulet from Zaine's neck and quickly backs away. "Been a pleasure doing business with you." Crux gives a quick bow, then runs off deeper into the temple.

"Keep pressure on it." --- Cyn perks up a bit. He looks to Brink. "That's Zaine's voice." Cyn and Brink reach the end of the corridor, check to see if each other are ready, then head out. Cyn spots Zaine and Alan and runs over. "What happened?" Zaine shrugs, then winces from the pain in his right shoulder. "Had a bit of fun is all..." he says weakly. "Lay him flat Alan. We'll have to dress these wounds. If Alexi were--" "I'm right here." Alexi says as she comes around the corner. "Thanks for leaving me by myself in a strange place." When Zaine said Crux, both Alexi and Cyn visibly tensed. Cyn looked mad as hell and had a weird look in his eyes; Alexi looked a bit frightened. "Are you sure?" Cyn asks vehemently. "You're sure he said his name was Crux? Describe him to me." ----- -Deep within the temple- Crux stands, looking up at the sand falling in through the roof of the temple like a waterfall. "How nice!" He spins around once, holding Zaine's amulet before him and laughing. "That was too easy! Pathetic really!" The lion bird creature that brought Zaine and Alan to the temple rests behind the sandfall watching him. Crux walks over to it, talking. "Look Anzu! I've got four of them now. Just one more to go! I'm so close!" He laughs again, then stops abruptly. "I just need to get the last one..." He pets Anzu and he purrs in response. "Now is not the time. I'll come back for it." Crux hops up onto Anzu's back in one leap, then nudges its sides. Anzu lifts his wings and jumps out through the opening in the roof, flying off into the sky with Crux on his back. |

Dirty thief. I'm just glad he didn't kill you." Alan smiles as she holds Zaines hand tightly. "Who is he anyway? You both seem to know him, or at least his misleading name. I thought crossaints were sweet." She remarks, still fuming a bit. |
