Hi, Onani Master here. I would like to discuss the messages and symbolism in Onani Master Kurosawa in this thread. I won't go in to depth of the symbolism or specific parts of the doujin, like The World Behind the Eyelids (chapters 20-21) or the conversations between Kitahara and Kurosawa.
Okay, let's note one thing: Onani Master Kurosawa is NOT a romance manga. Anyone in this club should have already known that. Romance was used to develop the story and Kurosawa, but never be actually focused on. I will discuss it in minor detail later, but I always find that people criticize the romance on the forums. The romance with Sugawa was just to serve as its own little message and a nice way to wrap up the story.
The way I saw this manga was that it was satire on shut-ins. I'll break it down to how I saw everything:
Masturbating in the Girl's Washroom: This is basically alienation of self from society. A person would rather ignore everything around him instead of trying to make friends inside or outside of school, and go shut himself into a girl's washroom and do something as meaningless as masturbation. This is like a shut-in ignoring the real world, locking themselves up in their rooms and indulging themselves in manga, anime, video games, etc.
Tikahara: Stagnancy. Kitahara's behavior was childish and her actions were counterproductive. She never dealt with her problems head on and never actually solved them, but only delayed the frequency of the bullying that she was victim of. Much like shut-ins whom don't face the problem they need to deal with and delay their confrontation with their problems.
Masturbation Terrorism: This one is self-explanatory. A false sense of righteousness. "They're wrong and I'm right." They may be wrong, but it doesn't necessarily mean that what you're doing is right either. You have no right to look down on other people, because you're not doing anything that makes you all that much better than them. Note that both Kitahara and Kurosawa are shut-ins, and this one is more centered around Kitahara.
Romance: There are far more important things in life than what you've been doing with it so far, namely romance. You won't find the things that you're doing to be all that important once you find something that you like better, so go out there and find it. So far, you've only convinced yourself that you're happy with what you have.
Takigawa x Nagaoka: Serves as the ultimate "fuck you." Anybody who is outgoing and cares about life will outdo someone apathetic in almost every aspect of it. All the while that someone imagines the possibilities, there are people trying to achieve them and the odds are that they'll have accomplished it before the former attempts to.
Confession: Breaking out of the shell. Alienated for along time and the desire to change. It won't be easy to change for the better, because it always comes with price. It will be uncomfortable, but don't be afraid of leaving the little box that you've placed around you. There will always be hardships, but in the end, there will be rewards. As long as you get out and try to improve, it'll be worth it.
The side characters in Onani Master Kurosawa were designed to portray some kind message. This is why they were not as developed as Kurosawa. It would have been dumb for the mangaka to leave characters with very little development in a character driven story.
Nagaoka: No matter how much you're hated by the world or how much shame you've brought upon yourself, a real friend will stick by you and help you out. They'll be willing to help you once you decide to start anew.
Takigawa: As long as you try to better yourself, the people who you've hurt along the way will forgive you, e.g. your friends and family. If they truly care about you, they'll acknowledge the fact that you're trying to change and support you.
Sugawa: The ultimate form of redemption -- someone with prejudice against you may change their opinion of you. You may even befriend someone who you hated or vice versa. Hell, who knows, you might even fall in love them. You never know, because you can't expect everything that happens in life. Take things one step at a time and don't be afraid of being assertive when you need to be. Life is too short to be hung up on one thing, so when the time comes, you're going to have to move on. |
