That was interesting - my first time watching something from this era of Japanese animation. It's amazing to me that animation has been around for so long...and then to see how far we have come.

The poor dog didn't deserve that. Hanasaka was a jerk.

The version shared here is the 1928 version, not the 1917 one.

If anyone knows where to find the 1917 version call the national film centre in Tokio, there hasn't been a know copy since 1923.

That neighbor was a real nuisance, kinda glad he got what he deserved.

If this was done today, that man's cherry blossom trick would've been very beautiful as it would be in color. But since it was in black and white I had to tone my rating down because it wasn't spectacular as it should.

So, In the end it look like the film has been lost (only a single frame remains of this work) and the shared video above is from an alternative version of the movie from 1928.

The dog didn't deserve to be treated so horrid by the neighbor or to die just for tricking the mean neighbor :( the neighbor got why he deserved though. He was so jealous of the kind elderly couple that his greed ruined him.

a new adaptation with vibrant colours would be really good, idk if this is a fable but i take it like that.
