I was wondering why some people (including me) prefer yuri stories over hetero ones.
Since it's quite hard for me to answer this question, I was hoping to get some answers from you guys.

Do you really prefer yuri over hetero stuff and why is the genre Shoujo Ai/Yuri so appealing to you?

Hard to say. Maybe because good "normal" romances is quite a rare thing. They often turn to be generic harems or just boring. While shoujo-ai/yuri titles mostly good in terms of romance and heroines in such a series mostly have more likable personalities. But maybe it's just a desire to see more exotic but not irritating romance

I can't really put it to words... But i think it's beautifull how the love in yuri can overcome the genderline (or whatever it's called) ^.^ now, yes, yaoi also crosses the genderline, but it's very different.
In yuri you can often ''feel'' the love, because it is so intense, with most couples, the girl is all vulnerable and the guy tough. But with yuri, there are 2 girls, so the love is (often) very... delicate ( BUT, what i love the most is when there's this girly girl and a real tomboy, so it's not really because guys are too tough, or something like that, it's justthat... idk...).
Then there's also the fact that boys and girls have different characteristics. And girls are often cuter than boys, girls show their feelings (more often and faster), (most) girls are more emotional etc.
Oh, and with girls, there's a thin line between friendship and love. I like it when the relationship between 2 girls is wobbeling on that line :D but ofcourse this is all my opinion. It could be something completly different with you... Anyways, that's how i kinda think about it :)

I think part of it is because of all the emotional substance. I'm not saying that het or yaoi isn't emotional, but I tend to think yuri is slightly more emotional because there are two girls. I also love that border between friendship and love, and compared to many yaoi I've seen there's more cuteness.

I don't know if I prefer it, but it's definitely the (niche) genre I'm most fond of. There seems to be more variance of the type of romance when it comes to yuri.
For example, Candy boy is ultra-fucking cute. Even though there isn't a lot as far as story goes, the characters (besides Saku) are just so adorable.
Strawberry Panic! is one of the most dramatic/emotionally-tense series I've seen, and although it's more-or-less character-centric, it was very well done.
Simoun...well, is kind of unique even in the genre, hah. Good story, characters, and romance(s).

Even if the series doesn't have the best plot, the characters in all of the yuri series I've seen have made up for it, and just make the show besides. Yuri feels more intimate, in my opinion. Yeah, there are cliches and archetypes, but they don't seem as over-used as they are in hetero-centered romance anime. It's, for me, much easy to become (overly) attached to characters and empathize with them (which, considering I do so substantially anyway, is kind of lol).

Also, I guess I just like seeing non-"majority" type romances (which also why I've liked the few yaoi/shounen-ai series I've seen/read).

Plus, I've always liked girl x girl, so when there is fanservice, it's awesome for me, haha.

Well I'm a girl who's into girls and yuri helped me figure myself out in my early teens + it's always nice to have some representation in media

Well for one thing it's way too rare.

Secondly, girl on girl is hot.

I think it's pretty.
Not hot, as in erotic, actually I dislike yuri when it's just for the erotism or to "look hot".
Cute stories is the appeal to me.

It's because I am into girls irl and I am a girl so I can totally relate and enjoy anime/manga of this genre. I get more excited when I watch Shoujo-Ai than normal ones. I find myself imagining things like being the main character in the Anime and experiencing those things for myself. It's really pretty cute and GAAAAH I just love it ;A; is that bad? is that baaaad?

Well, to some extent I do that myself (and I am not a woman). Then again, to be able to immerse yourself into the experience should be a good thing. I mean, my favorite characters, my favorite shows, at best they give me an "experience". Lesser things are just "entertaining".

Now as to why shoujo ai? Well, I am mostly not very satisfied with the logic and emotions most of the male type characters follow in more romantic works. I won't state it is an attribute of "realism", but more as "recognition" and "admiration". It isn't really even the "romance" (as in relationship) that I wan't, but the attributes that make it romantic. In shoujo ai, I find that romantic attribute calming.

The romance between girls is incomparable. It's so fine, so smooth. That's it. Hard to explain more in English......

Well it's not like i hate hetero stuff, it's just there are more yuri stories which are sweet, romantic and even dramatic. There are also straight romance mangas which i also read and I find them really good, but I just hate those Harem and Reverse Harem. I'm like a fan of pure love, even if its forbidden. I also read sometimes shounen ai or gender bender as long they have some good plot and are comfortable to read. I read some yaoi, but what i can say is that 90% of them are really mostly just sex-scenes or something. You have that in Yuri too, but not that often. As long the characters are cute/good and the story is interesting i will read/watch it. But still I would prefer Girls love in first place. Maybe it's my hate for men irl though i am a man myself lol

I'm a male, actuall y i like both but, i would say i prefer yuri way more.
Maybe, probably cause i love females so much that i wanna see em being happy together ?
Can't really explain anyway, that's just a tought or that's just a fantasy of mine... being a girl loving a girl, can't explain... or maybe more like someone other have said being a man i won't like much stories involving other men ?

A bit of this for me as well truth be told. I could take the overly simplistic route and say I like reading/ watching yuri media because I love women and don't particularly mind if the women also love women, but there's probably more to it than that, heh

On the one hand, it's heart-warming to see the really cute and intimate relationships that can form in yuri titles, but on the other hand, it's also really cool seeing more strong female characters portrayed as well. I guess escapism is a part of it as well; seeing a heterosexual relationship would be all too easy to draw parallels from/ with. Add in the fact that lesbian relationships often include different dynamics to hetero relationships, it makes for engaging reading/ watching :)
