With episodes like this, it's hard to not see the mushi as evil or wrong. But I think that's what makes this show so beautiful, these conflicting emotions that never have a definitive answer. I'm at least glad that despite what happened, that family in the valley wasn't torn apart by it and this ended on a happier note.

Wow, Ginko is having trouble and is almost frozen lol.

Damn, now that's one great meal you got there Ginko!

Winter my ass... what the hell is going on...

So something is affecting the son of the old guy huh.

Damn... poor Chiyo...

So he chose to keep that power after all...

I don't really know how, since this episode wasn't particularly sad, but I ended up crying at the end. Great episode 10/10.

Exceptional episode. Another excellent use of color when depicting the green valley, the contrast with the snow also.

And then there is the story, from the episodes this season this one had the most emotional impact on me. Beautiful and sad at the same time. One of my favorite Mushishi episodes.

What I saw the valley has been covered by snow, I thought it meant he continue to do that for several years until he pass away. Turns out to be him taking the purge at that time instead.

7.5/10 for this episode.
Isayama Hajime should be awarded The Manga with The Highest Inconsistencies of Characters' Appearances.
He keeps performing multiple plastic surgeries on those Shingeki No Kyojin characters in a SINGLE chapter.
Yes, I've read up to the latest chapter of Shingeki No Kyojin manga.
Forced myself to read through the kidsketching chapters after the anime's ended. At least from now on, I only have to go through the hell once a month.
Patiently awaiting SNK TV/movie/OVA anime-sequel.
The 2015 SNK live-action movie would probably suck.

So I guess the fact that it snowed in the valley means that he took the cure/purge as others have mentioned.

He eventually took the purge. If not, Ginko would never say that the valley came to face hardships in a few years' time. Still, it worked out in the longer run as the family was living happily and moderately.

One of the happier episodes tho the mother feeding her blood to her son in the form of milk was heartrending. Great stuff.

Probably one of the most bizarre Mushi phenomenons: milk becoming blood & tears. Really bizarre. Beautiful episode though.

This time, there is a further qualitative leap in the relationship between man and Mushi, the narrative shows a symbiosis between them, but the interesting thing is that there is also an important life lesson at the end. Also this time Ginko is almost a spectator. Drawings and backgrounds, excellent.

I thought Ginko was taking a nap in the cave, guess I was wrong haha.

feels all over again, poor mother died using her blood as nourishment, that last quote. "milk turns to blood, nourishes the earth, and then return to it, thus, the earth is imbued with a living, welling tide"

Well Ginko saved so many ppl so he deserves to be saved for once, in the end he didn't let go of the mushi after he learned the truth, great episode.

Nice episode, was a bit in awe that about the start though. wtf happened to Ginko?? Probably lost his footing somewhere in the thick snow but still, had me worried there for a minute.
Ahhhh one thing i will say is, i do actually wonder how old Ginko really is, there's quite a few time skips here and there, but 7 years? Wowzer.
Was happy the guy didn't hate the Mushi for his mothers death, being told something like that after finding out the truth was shrouded in lies is a tough to get through. But the dude took it like a champ.

His mother becomes pale and died, coz her son was able to get milk (which the baby can't before she drinks the mushi) from her which is it's her blood. That's awful.

The sacrifices parents make for their children. First, Chiyo for her son, and then the sacrifice the son makes for his children. It is not a 'choice', but a responsibility, something that has to be done.

I believe that Houichi did take the purge eventually, that explains how some years later the valley was engulfed in snow, and he was being helped by his whole family.
Over 11 years ago, I took this episode as one that speaks of sacrifice for family through generations. I just read my comment from back then after my second watch (I had actually lost all memory of watching this story) and found myself surprised by my observation.

I was thinking in terms of generational trauma and how we become obligated to family - it seems my time away from family and home has made me a bit too individualistic and self-absorbed.

It was indeed a bittersweet episode, and I loved Houichi's resolve and his sense of duty and responsibility towards his parents and his wife and children. What a man.

A Tier Mushishi episode - I'll add it to my list of happy episodes even though the background was traumatic :) All's well that ends well, I guess.
