I wanted to start off with something most people know, since this is the most popular anime on MyAnimeList. And the theory is What happens after the users of the Death Note die?. This actually interested me from the very start of the series since Ryuk said that when the users of the Death Note die they go to nor heaven, nor hell. And as we know that means heaven and hell exists because of this sentence. Now we know that in the anime there is a heaven and there is a hell. But since the users of the Death Note don't go to neither we can presume that in actuality the users of the Death Note go to the shinigami realm(translation - Death god realm), from which Ryuk came in the first place. I think so, because that is the only other place mentioned that somehow maybe connected to actual heaven and hell. I'll also agree to either a fanfic or my imagination most likely that after Light went to the shinigami realm he becomes a shinigami. But. How does he get an appearence let's say like Ryuk?

As I said what I'm about to say is most likely fan-fiction or my imagination that Light experiences all the pain and suffering, like all the deaths of the people he has killed, but since he is almost immortal, he just keeps on living with that suffering untill he has repented for his sins. And after he has done that he will most likely start looking like a shinigami. And that's what I think will happen to people in Death Note who die, as well as, how do shinigami get their appearance.

For those of you who think otherwise, please post right under and tell me your theory about this! I'm hoping to get interesting theories!

You're on! the debate begins XD

Well that may be true for Light but that wouldn't happen for the people he killed with the Death Note. You're saying that Light's appearance will gradualy turn into that of a shinigami by experiancing all the pain and suffering that he used to kill people with the Death Note, and that it's the same for the people who's names are written in the Death Note. But the people whose's names are written in the Death Note wouldn't have experienced near as much pain and suffering as Light would have. So if I had to think of an alternative for those said people I would say that they become attached to the Death Note and give it it's power, almost like the Note has become a vessal for all the people's whose's names have been written in it.

That's a good theory, but... People who get killed by the Death Note do go to Heaven or Hell. Ryuk did say that only the ones who have used the Death Note go to nor Heaven, nor Hell. But you theory about them being "absorbed into the Death Note was also very good. But a lot of them did suffer greatly not to mention Shinigami aren't immortal either, they have to kill people in order to increse their lifespan. So even If they haven't been turned into looking like shinigami, they will gradualy turn into them. Since Light did play around with the Death Note when testing It.

I forgot about that bit! There goes my theory about the people whose's names were written. I'll have to rematch it later…

But even if he did turn into a shinigami he would still have to get permission from the shinigami king before all the time he has left, experiencing the pain and suffering he has inflicted, runs out to remain in that plain or to even become one of them.

Whoa you guys like to think deep...Very deep *mindblown*

Anyway , i think Pretty-boy theory is the best one mentioning Light slowly turning into a Shinigami . I think i can picture that cuz i thought that on Death Note season two , there was this one episode about Ryuk explaining the events that happen to one of the Shinigami . I thought that was Light himself but i guess its just my imagination or my instinct tells me that Light cant be dead . He's badass . Well , bad guys gotta die in the end right ?

I know this may sound ridiculous, but since the users of the death note can neither go to heaven or hell, so i thought maybe that their souls are stuck on Earth or something? Like a ghost or somewhat....u'know

Well, I would think that they would instead be sent to the shinigami realm and become death gods... there's no real explanation for it, but it would be cool :p
I was here? Prove it.

No. The fact that they don't go there doesn't mean that it excists. For example: "I won't go to the Kingdom of the Flying Spaghetti Monsters." Does it mean that when I tell this it can only be true if there is indeed such a kingdom? No. Because the very reason I won't go there might exactly be the fact that it doesn't excist. So there is no way to say for sure whether there is or isn't hell and/or heaven based on this reasoning. Knowing Ryuk his character he might very well say this just because there isn't heaven or hell to begin with.

But since the users of the Death Note don't go to neither we can presume that in actuality the users of the Death Note go to the shinigami realm(translation - Death god realm), from which Ryuk came in the first place. The reason I doubt this is simple; Shinigami's can become immortal by killing people, which means that they most likely won't decrease in numbers except for the few if not only exception of the ones in the series. Therefore everytime a new Shinigami comes into excistence because someone used a Death Note the population would increase permanantly. This would cause them to see loosing a Death Note as a far more serious crime than they did now (or they would at least act more on it), since it potentially generates new Shinigami's which will have to kill people to stay alive. Since that is something all Shinigami's have to do they will increase the amount of competition for themselves if they let other humans become Shinigami's.

It still does bring forth a very interesting theory nevertheless, one that is indeed possible for as far as I remember Death Note (I watched it pretty long ago.)

What I would also see as another possible theory is that they simply vanish. They stop excisting entirely. Keeping in mind that heaven and hell don't have to excist and also the idea of reïncarnation, this may be considered the worst possible punishement. Still; I'll have to agree the turning into a shinigami one is a lot more interesting.

Yes, but the manga had an alternative ending(though It's a yes and no type of deal as no one has proved that It's created by the original author or not http://deathnotefanon.wikia.com/wiki/Alternative_ending ), where Light died and was sent to the Shinigami realm.
And Shinigami do die, you think all of them want to be immortals?

maybe he did became a shimgami and still killing criminals.

The Kira Lives on after light Dies.

I wonder if he got a new name. Because if he didn't then shimigami can't die if their name has been written on Death Note. if that is the case then it will register as an error in the system and he will come back to life. Possible isn't it ?

or maybe light is one of those asyptamatic from phyco-pass so his brain will be preserved for sibyl in the future. it is possible and that will explain why did they start killing latent criminals.

and then light became Sibyl system part, but that will be depend on all what are we soul or just information.

If we are information than this could work if we are soul than also it can work after all brain hooked up to a supercomputer can also be regard as nor going to hell or heaven

so the prophecy was true all along, and it didn't violate any rule. Does it?

@TheAnimeAdmiral well this isn't really Death Note but anyway in Death Parade there is a slight reference to Light Yagami having his soul judged by the arbiters and I was thinking maybe the concept of heaven and hell is the same in Death Note as it is in Death Parade that being that neither exist and it's a human idea but when you really die you either get your soul reincarnated or you get it banished to the void never to be seen again, and since the users of the Death Note would have committed murder and possibly other things they would have their souls sent to the void.

I always assumed that when a user of the Death Note dies, they go to some sort of a Purgatory, or place between Heaven and Hell. They would be eternally trapped in a state of nothingness.

But I also love the theory that they become Shinigamis, which I never thought of before.

I'm not sure if you all watched the english dub, maybe that one was changed somehow compared to the subbed version. But the answer of what happens to anyone who dies in the Death Note universe is given in a very clear cut way in the final episode.

Here's a link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KE5PfBoDyc(Final episode, see 9:50 in to look at the 2 important intermission statements about the Death Note)
First statement:"All humans, without exception, will eventually die"
Second:"When they die, the place they go is MU(Nothingness)"

The exact thing Ryuk says to Light early on is that "Don't expect anyone who's used the Death Note to go to Heaven or to Hell."He didn't say Heaven or Hell actually exist. And the last episode basically confirms with what it says the intermission that Ryuk was just messing around with Light and being deliberately misleading. So @Elvario you are half-right here, it's just that nothingness isn't a punishment for Death Note users at all, just the same general result for any character whether or not they use the death note.

The author of the series also says there isn't supposed to be a Heaven or Hell in Death Note. Basically, there are zero consequences to using it unless you get the shinigami eye deal and lose half lifespan.
