THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
"Nihil" is Latin for "nothing"; a pretty grim name for a weapon.

I like the way the supernatural elements of this story conflate with non-supernatural explanations. Is Dororo possessed by the sword, or is he just drunk on the power of holding a weapon after spending virtually his entirely life being powerless? Is the samurai possessed or has he just gone mad from the stresses and brutality of fighting in war?

I suppose that specter rising from the sword and Hyakkimaru getting a body part back demands a supernatural angle, but the dichotomy still works I think.

Speaking of Hyakkimaru, he has been blind this whole time. I don't know if he always acted like it, but whatever.

That execution scene was messed up. No wonder the man went slightly mad; I'm assuming that it was only then that the sword become possessed.

The scenes of Hyakkimaru regaining a body part are surprisingly emotional.

This episode was better than the first part, but a double episode was too much for this tale.
Overall, I liked it. For some reasons like the one mentioned above. Too bad it was one of the 48.

4/5

It's less about TV consumers thinking less in the late 60s than internet peoples in the late 2010s (thanks for them by the way) than it is about the way they were able to accept certain elements because it was part of a fantasy story. Here, you will see people questioning about the most little wheel in a fantasy/magical setting, when the lack of comprehension is actually part of the definition of magic.

Noticed several times where him being blind contradicts whatever was happening. I really just sum it up to him being able to "sense" people and objects, haha.

Well, it did air 1969 and I'm pretty sure people around then didn't really think as deep about it as we do these days.

Overall, I enjoyed the episode. :)

Already? I thought they were going to have his eyes back the last. It would have made it the more climactic like the remake.

Didn't expect him to get his eye back so soon. oh well probably isn't going to change much since he already looked like he had normal eyes.

The way Hyakkimaru is rejected by people really breaks my heart! I'm at least comforted that he seems strong enough to cope with this.

Another very good episode. To be honest, I'd have never known Hyakkimaru was blind if the show hadn't told me. Ah well.
