Damn right that when they are living outside, they have to earn their lives to survive.

I'm still very proud of these kids for coming so far though since the beginning.

Great chapter.

Mama was a nice person after all. :(
Wish that she could've brought up these kids in the right environment. :(

Wait, is Ray Mama's son? :O

That final panel was glorious.
Earn your survival kids, it's a cruel but beautiful freedom.

Allow me if you will to try point towards something else that was done by Emma and the other children escaping. They've shattered the illusion of impossibility.

Isabella gave up because she didn't think there was any other way for her to survive. She chose to live for the shake of her friend, for the sake of giving the children as happy and long a life as she could. However, with Emma and the others successful escape there now remains another option, at for now. Yes, there is a chance the demons will figure how the children escaped, but there's also a chance they'll think the kids just fell into the gorge. If the demons think the ladder, then the route Emma and the others opened remains untouched. Allowing for other children, such as a older Phil to also escape. Additionally, if the Mamas can find some way of deactivating/removing the trackers on their hearts then they too could get away.

Emma and the others did more than just escape, they gave Phil, Isabella and perhaps many others hope, and when humans have hope that they can get out of a shitty situation with enough determination and will, God have mercy on any creature that gets in their way.

Ay A New Hope, and the Outside World Hype is real.
Curious on how the atmosphere and plot will be like now that we went from an escape to a survival scenario..

I hope the next arc is even better than this last arc was. I think it will be even better best written new manga out period not even close.

I really love the way the author handles the characters. It gives us more insight in how Isabella thinks of this world and the people around her. In a way I feel both disgusted and bad for her. When I saw Ray humming a tone, I immediately knew he was her child and it made me feel sad, because if the world was different she would probably raise Ray in a loving way.

I'm excited for next arc. And I don't want Isabella to die now :-(

Seeing Isabella's past and learning that she was the mother of Ray (Man the fanbase called that) was heartbreaking. I feel like her final few acts and seeing how she felt about her children escaping really redeemed her in a lot ways in my eyes. This series is so fucking good and I can't wait to learn more about the world our main characters escaped to in the next arc. Hopefully in a year or two we'll get an anime adaptation, I really want to see all these moments animated!

I jsut started reading this Manga and read all 37 chapters in one go. What a coincidence that the arc concluded today when I started! So far I pretty much enjoyed it, let's see what's next.
Trying to watch all available anime series so you won't have to anymore, the list of anime I can recommend is still in progress, tho

"My name is Yoshikage Kira. I'm 33 years old. My house is in the northeast section of Morioh, where the villas are, and i am not married. I work as an employee for the Kame Yu department stores, and i get home every day by 8 PM at the latest. I don't smoke, but i occasionally drink. I'm in bed by 11 PM, and make sure I get 8 hours of sleep, no matter what. After having a glass of warm milk and doing about twenty minutes of stretches before going to bed, I usually have no problems sleeping until morning. Just like a baby, I wake up without any fatigue or stress in the morning. I was told there were no issues at my last checkup."

And they made it, they are outside. That was a beautiful way to end this arc, Isabella did what she could and now she can only wish for them to find the light in this world.

Now crossing fingers that what is to come keeps the level, It's a 10/10 for me so far and I hope that the author has everything planned already, because I'm a bit worried that now that they are outside the story might lose it's charm depending on what happens.

Doesn't Isabella's "Mama" in the flashback look like a younger version of the Grandma???? We can't see neither faces but the outlines and hairstyles look really similar. Plus we know Grandma prefers Isabella and that might be because she was her "Mama". Is it just me or did anyone else notice that to?

I never expected that Ray would be Mama's son 😢 so heartbreaking.

Mama lost her friend and hope at the same time. She wanted to love the children but also to live, thus being a "Mama" for the field.

Anyone knows where Norman is? when he was harvested it seems that he didn't die (I hope. I pray to the Otaku G.. that he is ok)

Usually the whole antagonist is actually a decent person schtick is usually done poorly but this was handled really well and I like Isabella more as a character. She was placed in an impossible position; either die a sacrifice, or become a Mama and try to give the children a good life. It must really be hard for them to not get too attached knowing what'll end up happening to the children.

Anyway, I really enjoyed this chapter, and I can't wait to see what the outside world will be like. Will there be human societies, do the demons rule over everything, or will it all be a barren wasteland?

Maaaan, I feel really bad for Isabella. She was a good person after all

As someone had already predicted, Ray is Mama's son

Beautiful first arc, 10/10.

I hope the next arc will be as great as this first arc was

I don't want to say this, but this first arc was probably better than Shingeki's first arc, which for me was the best one, absolutely.

Now, as much as I understand Mama POV and agree to a certain point with all of the comments here. The author have successfully created multidimensional characters such ad Isabella and Cronny.

However, having said that I cannot fully sympathize with Isabella.

This is mainly when I consider her story from Rays perspective and mental state.

To analyze the mental state pf Ray:
1. We got to know first when Norman interrogated Ray is that small bits of his memory from when he was a child remains.

2. Rays choice of sacrificing his other brothers to plan the escape.

3. Ray confirmed that his own mother is a killer and is awaiting for the time when she hunts him down.

4. Bearing those facts alone for long years.

All of those facts must have made Ray must suffer from an unstable mental state that no wonder that he was planning a suicide all along. Mama at least should have given her own son some mercy or empathy. She had him suffer from all of those traumas.

We know now thag Ray told half the truth to Notman. I wonder what Norman would do if he knew that Isabellas Ray mother. Would have reacted differently

I've been waiting for Mama's past. I always knew she wasn't all evil. So much pathos running through this chapter. It's sad to think that the kids will forever remember Isabella as deceitful, and never knowing her true thoughts.
Escape arc done. Now to fight the demons they can't see, it's gonna be a toughie.

Isabella was put in a place where she diden't had much of a choice it was do or die.
But she wanted more then surviving she wanted somthing meaningful, that's what led to where she was, a mama, she was not pure evil, in some way she cared about the kids, she wanted to give them a peaceful and happy life while it lasted. Yes she cared alot about her status of "mama" but perhaps it was so she could mantain what she was doing somehow she found joy in it.

However the kids escaping shed a new light, maybe she was wrong, maybe we can change this whole situation, and now she truely hopes for the best for those escaped kids.

Nice chapter and pretty good conclusion of the first arc.

What Ray is Isabellas son ? Whatever, great chapter, nice to see that Iseballa helped with the escape and she really loves "her" children.

This was a long arc (reading this since it came out) and I'm glad that everything turned out well in the end. The real fun is about to start, though.

I'm surprised to know that Ray is actually Isabella's son :O Tbh this chapter is kinda sad, knowing that Isabella actually had a terrible past. She's such a nice person, but she must act like an evil because of the job.

That ending tho.. I have a feeling that time skip will happen soon ^ ^

What kind of bothers me is that

1. There have been 2 shonen-typical "I want to become stronger" moments, indicating that this entire arc of them being in the farm was just the build-up for them to develop fighting prowess against the demons and that this might actually be going to - sadly - move away from the mind games and instead turn into a power creep.

2. Norman is most likely still alive, as the last word(s) heard from a man who fearlessly fully accepted to die at the hands of demons, and not in a position where he'd be easily surprised by anything, were "what", with a rather disturbed, almost scared expression on his face.
At first I thought it might be an indicator that he realized the hopelessness of their escape intents at that point from what he had seen there. But now it actually makes more sense to think that he wasn't killed. Either the next time we see him he'll be in a nastily disfigured state or perfectly fine and with a power upgrade.

3. This would be a good opportunity for a time-skip. Which could mean that the whole scenery of the outside world will still be an unknown mystery for another 40 chapters where they try to break out AGAIN, but this time with phil and all the kids from all plantations.

I'm half expecting Norman to reappear as a human willingly working for the aliens/demons - thus becoming Emma and Ray's ultimate opponent... leading to volumes worth of thinking, out-thinking, counter-out-thinking story arcs.

Isabella is not a good person. Just because you understand her as a character doesnt mean she's not evil. She is, however, a pretty good antagonist. But I felt it was pretty easy to guess her past before this chapter.

:-o woah, Mama is Ray's real Mama. The kids have accomplished so much! Holy crap, I'm proud of them.

Though damn, I have mixed feelings about Mama now. I can understand her actions there but it wasn't until she was thoroughly beaten that she decided it'd be ok and wished them luck. She'd have turned them all into chow otherwise.

Wow. The whole time reading to this point, I completely understood Mama/Isabella's motive. I always empathized with her situation and her choices. But still, I also always considered her bad, because she is the enemy and I obviously support all these kids' struggle more than her personal struggle. Basically I understood completely how hard her life probably was and why she ended up the way she did... but I never felt bad for her.

But this chapter really wrecked my feelings. I never thought I'd pity her but damn... when Ray was shown humming that tune and she asked where he learned it... damn. I never cried thus far reading this series... only coming close when Norman was being taken away. But something about that scene just killed me emotionally.

Of all things to cry about I never expected it to be over Mama's pain. Man, this series is so deep, in some ways. This manga has, by far one, of the most realistic portrayals of the human psyche in its characters that I've ever read.

The unfortunate circle of circumstance of them all being in a system of kill or be killed. Mama was at the end of her line and she did what she had to before she probably dies here. I really hate no ones action in this series because what else are they to do in a system of restriction and freedom.

Great arc, I dont think it is the best thing ever, far from it, it was a 9's arc for me.

Expected them to somehow kill mom, but that didnt happen, and actually was a bit sad the whole thing, but at least she gave up, but what will happen to her and the rest of the child now?

BTW, here I was reading, after this chapter, thinking Norman was alive since he does show up there, and wtf, doesnt see him appearing again, then gone back to read this, and fuck... that was just his illusion.

being Mama is suffering.

Ray being Isabella's son was a really nice surprise and it really changes how you feel when you see these characters interact with each other on the earlier chapters.

This chapter was extremely good, I'm really hyped to see what's next. This manga has been a ride, can't wait to see how all this will be handled in the anime.
Here I come, rougher than the rest of them
The best of them, tougher than leather
You can call me knuckles, unlike sonic I don't chuckle
I'd rather flex my muscles
I'm hard as nails, it ain't hard to tell
I break'em down whether they're solid or frail
Unlike the rest I'm independent
It's my first breath, first test
Feel the right then the worst's left
