Anime vs VN differences?

I am currently reading the Amnesia: Memories visual novel (which is available in English on Steam) and enjoy it so far. It seems general agreement is that anime is not really good though, and I am not currently going to watch it. So, people who happened to both read VN and watch anime, I want to hear your opinion on what makes perception of them different - from differences in the plot to the features of anime/VN formats.

I played the VN years ago and really liked it. Watched the anime a while after and dropped it after like 6 episodes. The anime is just bad.
