Am I stupid or why are they all happy if their set goal was to get into the Nationals, but only got Gold (in episode 13)? Doesn't that mean that they didn't get into the Nationals, since they already got Gold in Kumikos previous orchestra (episode 1) and Reina got upset 'cause they "only" got Gold?

There's a second season. This sounds like you've only watched the first and left it at that.

Getting gold is different that getting into nationals. In middle school, Kumiko and Reina got gold but didn't get into nationals. In the last episode, they do get gold and nationals. I'm not sure but that's what I remember. Just watch season 2. It's so much better than s1 imo.

i don't see what there is to understand. They got the gold and are advancing in the competition. In episode one, they got a gold but didn't advance and that made Reina upset.

Okay so basically this is how it works:

Like USA is divided into multiple states like California, Texas, etc, similarly Japan is divided into Prefectures like Tokyo, Nagano, Toyama, etc, there are 47 prefectures.

Every prefecture has their own tournament and teams are selected from different prefectures to represent the said prefecture in the all Japan nationals tournament. The number of teams selected depend on the size and population of the prefectures. For example, Tokyo is big and has a lot of people there so 4 teams are chosen. Miyagi is a small prefecture so only 1 team is chosen from there.

The characters in Hibike live in the Kansai prefecture and 3 teams are chosen from there.

During the prefectures tournament, teams are awarded medals based on their performance(gold, silver or bronze). Any number of teams can be awarded gold. For example if 20 schools perform, 8 can get gold.

However out of those 8 schools that get gold, only 3 can go to nationals. So Kumiko and Reina did get gold when they were in middle school(episode 1) but were not selected for nationals.

However at the end of season 1, not only do they get gold, they are also selected as one of the three teams to represent Kansai in the All Japan Nationals.

They are happy because they are one step closer to their goal. Season 2 shows their journey upto the nationals.

I hope you understand it now. In short, there are two tournaments:

1. Prefecture tournament held in each state.
2. All Japan Nationals.

If you still don't understand something feel free to ask!

Thanks @DamonElix that really helps. I’m not OP but your explanation clears any confusion I had. Especially since I am just now picking up S2 after last watching S1 back in 2015 iirc.

There was some part at the start of S2 where they mention dud gold and real gold or something like that and I was quite confused haha. Now it makes sense tho so I can continue watching happily.
