i watched Tengen Toppa Gurenn Lagann way back, and i just watched Kill La kill a few days ago, it gives off the same vibes, but i somehow enjoyed this more than TTGL.

is anybody feeling the same thing, maybe we can discuss why if that's the case.

I love both but having just been mildly disappointed with Gurren Lagann on a recent rewatch I'd put Kill la Kill above it rn

I'll keep wishing for a world where you can be happy.

I've only seen Kill la kill once but on my first viewing of TTGL I enjoyed it more than my first viewing of Kill la kill. As of rn, I enjoyed TTGL more, but Kill la kill was also excellent.

Yes, and by orders of magnitude! KlK is 9.5-10 for me. I'd put GL at about ~6 for all but the last half of the last ep. Where it drops to about ~1 with it's shitty nonsensical full edgelord ending.

I like both shows but Kill la Kill is fucking amazing, and Gurren Lagann is very good overall.

I feel like Gurren Lagann has higher peaks in terms of hype with its action, direction and animation, and the underdog story and characterization was very good overall, but the plot in the 2nd half was really tiresome for me at one point. I got what they were going for, but it lost a lot of steam for me, and only was saved by the action at the end. I know a lot of people really loved the more deeper, political showcase for Gurren Lagann to show the contrast of people before having the privileges of a well constructed society vs after, but man it just never failed to grab me in that way. Generally the action and visuals saved this show from being an average or fine show at best. I only really cared for Simon and Viral in the show and sort of for Kamina too. Also the music kicked ass as well so I have to give credit there.

But with Kill la Kill, while it had a much tighter budget (since brand new studio), it managed to captivate me a lot more than Gurren Lagann did. Gurren has a larger scope, its more of an epic per say from a mecha to a political bonanza, but Kill la Kill took concepts that I never expected (or expected to be good) and turn it into a fiasco of pure awesomeness. Imaishi and staff were on something when they wanted to animate a show where clothing was dominating the stature of the world, with a high school being ruled under a dictatorship with clothing dominating all too, with the absurdity of using fanservice as a proper plot point and making a genuinely entertaining and fascinating story behind such ludicrous concepts while managing to mix in the fun cliches to create a chaotic ass experience that's always got my blood pumping. Some twists were genuinely terrific too, which I don't say too often when it comes to twists since its so easy to mess up.

Plus, with having Ryuko and Satsuki (2 of my top 10 favorite female characters), a great side cast in Mako and the Elite 4, the absolute godtier hype of the Sawano soundtracks for everyone and all situations, the absurd yet insane directing for a very strict budget and much more, Kill la Kill just left more impact on me, was more creative, more entertaining, had a better dub (which I saw both in), more bloodpumping soundtracks, and ultimately is more rewatchable and more memorable for me. A ton of people prefer Gurren Lagann which is really cool with me, but for me, Kill la Kill is truly one of my favorite anime out there.

My ratings:

Story/Writing: KLK - 10, GL - 6.5
Characters: KLK - 10, GL - 7
Visuals: KLK - 9, GL - 10
Sound: KLK - 10, GL - 9
Times Seen: KLK - 5, GL - 2

Final Scores: KLK - 10, GL - 7

I thought I did until I re-evaluated my own impressions and realize that KLK is 9/10 at best, while TTGL sits at 9.5/10.

I just felt like TTGL had the slight edge in terms of overall payoff from the story.

From around ep 10, TTGL had me bored to tears honestly... not even its god tier visuals and fight scenes could save it imo...
Kill la Kill was pure awesomeness that never got boring and overstayed its welcome. Much more clever dialogue and outlandish characters elevated the show for me. Gurren Lagann's dialogue felt too basic...

I watched EVA, then TTGL, and now I just finished Kill la Kill. Seeing as all three are made by some if the same people, and are all well regarded or hated in measure, I can say this. I liked Gurren more but only slightly. EVA is in a league of its own but Gurren and Kill la Kill are more recent and similar.

Gurren Lagann ( 9 / 10 )

Kill La Kill ( 4 / 10 )

Gurren Lagann ran so that Kill La Kill could attempt to walk but then fall flat on its face.

I started watching anime at the beginning of 2017 pretty much, so nearly 5 years. Most of those 5 years during my end of high school phase and few years at uni, I'm not the kind of guy to study intensively then so most of the time I watched anime intensively, particularly around my high school phase and during the early COVID-19 phase during lockdown. Some times I do take semi-lengthy periods off due to burnout (currently in that phase now). While I watch anime intensively, I do make time when I don't, to either play some games, hang out with friends or watch sports. Basically anything but sleep, which I don't do too much per day.

I do enjoy media outside anime, like sports or pro wrestling, and games to a degree (did play more though before anime).

Edit: Just realized you asked about the Kill la Kill part. Yeah, it's in my top 5-10 at least. Somehow that show has maintained that hype level for me from when I first started it on my way to school to now. Gurren Lagann though aged a bit poorly for me, that's probably a 6/10 for me at best now.

Tbh, I did enjoy KLK more, but I'd still put TTGL in front of it because the latter has a more compelling and thorough story and cast of characters imho.

TTGL became dogshit after Kamina died. Kill La Kill's only dogshit part is because Nui and Ragyo won't fucking die sooner.

Yeah I guess I do, TTGL has a stupidly huge cast I couldn't get invested in and it's all a little too "fart jokes + boobies" for me. Until it starts taking itself way too seriously, at which point it sucks for other reasons.

Of course KLK falls apart in the second half because nobody at Trigger can write (hey let's spend 2 episodes on the cast fighting random schools in other parts of Japan for no reason! let's make the protagonist have a big depressive episode and start rejecting Senketsu even though we already did that a few episodes ago! let's reveal that Ryoko's dad was actually just wearing an old man disguise 24/7 to explain why he looked old at first when he was actually in his 30s! etc)

First half's very strong though.

It's nice to know that ALL our discussions about the second half never stick whatsoever and you retain zero information :-!

Life can be cruel and unfair. At worst it can traumatize and cripple you. The desire for wanting things to return to the way they were can cost everything and changes nothing. The best way is to keep moving forward, struggle on.
Anger can be powerful but can only get you so far. Let people into your life even if some of them leave you in time.

Fight. Like. Hell. For everything and everyone you love. Always.
