Been loving this series so far, normally fantasy worlds aren't my favorite types of anime but I love the world that this show takes place in. Magic isn't over the top and the story is driven more by political means than anything overly fantastical. Are there any other series that have a similar, not too over the top level of fantasy? I'd prefer pre 2010s but if there's any recommendations I'd love to hear it.

Despite being a Shounen series, One Piece has probably the best world building and political system I've seen in any anime.

Since you already tried SnK, my recommendations are Mushoku Tensei, Ascendance of a Bookworm, To your eternity and (even if its currently airing) Ousama Ranking.

yup, all of them new.

When it comes to old anime, only Berserk 97 comes to my mind

Yeah, sorry brother. As the other comments have stated, probably none. The 12 kingdoms is imo easily the best built world, not even in a fantasy type setting but in general. There are a few that get close, Berserk, mushoku tensei, maybe Yona of the dawn? Vinland saga has good world building (or obvious reasons), kingdom does a good job at it too, Katanagatari is good. But unfortunately you've just watched the peak of what anime has to offer, there isnt much to compare to it.
This is an official MAL signature. Monogatari is the best anime. Thank you for your time.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes has a similar focus on running nations and campaign strategy. The OVA series has great aesthetics and music.

Seirei no Moribito has a similiar, grounded East Asian fantasy setting. Is good. Great music.

I'm surprised no one remembered Escaflowne. It has different pacing, but essentially the girl gets to another world (without being hit to death by a truck), which is quite close to her own, but is very different and intense.

@burbels Took the words right out of my mouth! Literally started watching this because it reminded me of Escaflowne which I loved as a kid, honestly need to rewatch it.
