Fune wo Amu is somewhat alike I feel. It's 12 episodes and have a complete ending too so it's not a massive time suck either. Animation is good too.

Rainbow: Nisha Rokubō no Shichinin hits similar emotional highs while being more gritty and about a group of juvenile offenders compared to one main protagonist. It’s rather explicit at times but it tells a good story about a couple of relatively good dudes that had nothing go their way and are now trying to make it back into society. The soundtrack is also top tier.
