Question as a first time watcher of RWBY, does this Anime truly represent how good the series is?

I started watching it because I've known RWBY was popular and people have always told me to watch it, but I could never get past the original CG to enjoy it. So when people told me this Anime was being done by Shaft and you could watch it without knowing anything from the original series, I was pretty excited.

After the initial episodes which I thought were good at times and had potential, I feel like the show has failed to build on that and has now become a bit of a disappointment for me. I don't know if it's because this isn't a great adaption of RWBY story wise or whether I just don't like RWBY.

So for those who have seen the original series, what is your opinion on it?

The anime skip a lot of the OG series and make original content which I think is pretty annoying and bad.
The anime don't represent the OG series, and it's not enjoyable even for the OG RWBY fans and thé anime only.

I'm an RWBY fan and this anime is a piece of crap.

No, this crappy anime doesn't represent the OG RWBY in any way, shape, or form and the action scenes in this anime are piss poor compared to the OG RWBY which has awesome animation and choreography in the action scenes.

After the first 3 episodes Hyousetsu Teikoku becomes something entirely different than RWBY OG.
For me it's an interesting experiment but doesn't tell anything about how good and bad is the show from 2013 which continues with the main story, introduces multiple different characters and locations, changes tone, pacing and direction, retcons established rules, ruins characters, redeems other characters ect.

@kriissyy12, it's simple: first three episodes (or 3-in-1) of the anime represent first two seasons of original RWBY, though, of course, not entirely due to time restraints. First two seasons of original RWBY built up characters, and in that sense are good. They got cool fights and good songs to boot. After that it went downhill like a giant lead ball from Fujiyama because Rooster Teeth, the company producing RWBY, banked on creator's death and thrown his original plans into garbage bin, which is painfully obvious in the ending of third season. So, if you thought that maybe you're missing something - you don't. If you know about Supernatural and know what it turned into after season 5, after the original creator left - you have the idea, though with RWBY the harsh reality is even worse. I admit, the middle episodes of the anime drag a bit - but episode 8 makes up for that, and with a damn bang. It's completely different story, even though with the same chars - plus anime-original ones. Overall, don't force yourself on either - if you didn't liked both original RWBY and anime version, just drop it, it's not like you can't return to it if you decide to give it another chance.

For shippers? Surely. Fans of Monty's work might have another opinion tho.

As someone who watched OG RWBY day 1 and has stuck throw to volume 8, This RWBY side story is really good. People need to realize that this isn’t a remake of OG RWBY, this is like an Untold Side story of OG RWBY, the first 3 episodes were just recaps of Volume 1-3 of OG RWBY to give context on the characters and the story of OG RWBY. Even though I’m nostalgic of OG RWBY, Watching this RWBY has been very fun and enjoyable, seeing it actually animated by a studio has been a blessing, the music is really good ( No surprise it being done by Saori), and the story being very interesting (way better than Vol 4-7 of OG RWBY). Finally people that are probably saying this RWBY is bad, are the same people who probably stopped watching after Vol 3 of OG RWBY, Vol 4-7 are boring and a whole mess, Vol 8 is good.

I don't know about the other RWBY fans but definitely not for me. I will admit the story is not RWBY's strongest point and it got somewhat worse in Vol. 4 and up but the animation got better and the fight choreography in the action scenes is equally as good or even better so it was a tradeoff, the OG RWBY shines in the action scenes and character development, not the story. I've watched everything in the OG RWBY and I'm waiting for Vol. 9.

I can't say the same for this anime though, the story so far is pretty shitty, the animation is getting worse with each episode and it has pretty bad action scenes too, apparently, all the budget went to the 1st episode which is the one with better animation, the rest of the episodes in this anime are crap.

This is just a downgrade in every aspect and I can't believe people are actually praising this garbage but whatever, you do you. The rating speaks for itself, I won't be surprised if this piece of crap ends up with a 5/10.

I would disagree with all of this, one RWBYs strong points was it’s story and people cared about the world building of RWBY; the fights was also another strong suit, same as the music. Vol 4-7 saw a massive drop in people actually watching RWBY even though the animation got better, and that’s because the story got worse, Vol 8 people started to enjoy it a lot more because the story got better.

Ice Queendom has been enjoyable and actually kind feels more in line with OG RWBY, but again it’s a Side Story. Also don’t base MAL ratings on this anime, because most of the people think that this is a remake.

I already rated this garbage a 2/10 and the rating will stay there, I don't think anything this piece of crap offers at this point will make me change my mind, I don't praise mediocrity but you do you.

I believe your comment was for me, yes? if so, then I wish you just quote me to know you are talking about me.

I've been watching animes for decades, I obviously have more than 100 animes completed, I have hundreds, I simply don't bother in updating my anime list because it doesn't even matter. I mean, I don't even bother uploading a freaking profile picture so that should give you a clue already.

In a matter of speaking, this series is a perfect representation of RWBY: The first three episodes/volumes were good with great fight sequences, and episodes/volumes 4-7 have had a noticeable dip in quality. I haven't seen episode 8 yet, but after the previous 4 episodes, I'm in no rush to do so.

man. I just wait until 8 episodes comes out. I thought that there will be a lot of stuff or something like that. but instead I can't believe it. 4 to 7 or maybe 8 still on and on and haven't solve the first problem started in the end of episode 3.

I’m waiting for the whole season to finish to fully pass judgement, but so far this is nowhere near OG RWBY in character development, storytelling, action, etc. The point of this seems to be to add depth to the characters via a dream-trapping nightmare grim, but the characters seem much more juvenile and Ruby seems like an airhead.

The OG RWBY is 10/10 in my book, rivaling Avatar and HxH for top battle/adventure shounen. This one is maybe 6/10, and probably only holds my interest because I like og rwby so much.

Personally I think, with the exception of one cut out fight scene, the anime is a superior retelling of volumne 1 of rwby, with a few missed gags. I think the characters are a lot better, and jaune is superior in this version. I wish the did another episode or two retelling the old stuff before their own story.
Rwby always felt like it needed a second draft, to me anyways.

oh god no,
the original works are infinitely better.
also ice queendom appears to be a sub story as nothing past episode one appeared in the main story.
but back to it, RWBY was a mixture of humour and action. ice queendom is just seriousness from start to finish

OG RWBY was already complete dogshit, especially past season 3. So if this is worse, dang...

That's like a new low for the RWBY franchise.

If you think the OG RWBY past season 3 was complete dogshit then that's fine, it's your opinion. In my opinion though, it was enjoyable. In season 4 and up the story lost quality, sure, but at least the animation got better and the fight choreography was as good as the previous seasons or even better so to me, it was some sort of tradeoff.

I'm still enjoying the OG RWBY for what it is which is a decent show with awesome animation in the action scenes. I can't say the same for this anime though, the story is even shittier and the animation in the action scenes are way worse so to me, this anime is just a downgrade in every aspect compared to the OG RWBY.

Personally, I only liked the fights in RWBY and that was only when Monty Oum was still around (rest in power). Never really liked the story in the early seasons tbh.

I'm not surprised Ice Queendom is bad. I mean a Shaft anime without Shinbou at the helm is bound to be a disaster.

Fair enough. This anime is simply not cutting it for me but to be completely fair to this anime, it's better if you watch it and form your own opinion about it, who knows, you may end up liking it, apparently, some people are liking it around here.

I simply don't like this anime because the first 3 episodes were just a recap from the OG RWBY so it was a rushed mess and episode 4 and up has new content which is fine, I'm actually ok with new content but the story is just too shitty for me to enjoy and if the story is shit and the action scenes is shit then there's not much to like about it. What else does this anime have, character development? nope, music? nope, this just feels like Boruto or Dragon Ball GT, just a crappy side material but even worse.

I would expect a 12 episode anime to have at least decent animation but this anime has shit animation, all the budget went to the 1st episode which has decent animation but episode 2 and up is meh and the animation keeps getting worse and worse in each episode.

I know you can't trust the ratings in MAL since the ratings are mostly BS anyways but at least there is something fairly accurate around here, an anime with a rating below 7 has serious issues and at this rate, I won't be surprised if this anime ends up with a 5/10 in a couple of months.

No, while this do offer some sprinkle of good animations, the flow of battle in the OG series just flows too well and the use of strategies surrounding their weapons and wombo combo netween them just doesnt exist in this one.

And the OG RWBY had so many small character tidbits even out of combat, just the small goofy moments where they talk was one of my highlights in the series, like when Ruby was given cookies and ate it during ep 1, I was waiting for the anime version of that but it just wasnt there.

Another thing is that I really dont like how theyre exploring Weiss' character, or rather the main center of the season, the OG had a time to introduce the characters well during the earlier seasons and had a lot of comedy in it, while for first time watchers watching Icequeendom they it just went straight in to drama, like tehy talking about friendship shenanigans when they havent even went on a mission yet or a even a week in class atleast.
Hhhmmmmmm.......
