Despite being one Astro Boys' best episodes, this also shows him completely out of character. For one thing, it's not like him to completely break Robot Law and travel somewhere without permission. Also, I had no idea that robots could sleep in this show. In the 1963 show, they definitely couldn't. There was even an episode where he was given an opportunity to dream for once. Thinking back on it, I guess there are episodes where it hints that they're asleep in this show, but I guess I glossed over those parts. Seeing him so sleepy felt... off. Not only that, but it felt out of character to see him leave that Sea Serpent base with all those captive people still inside. Normally, he'd go back and finish the job, but in this one he just leaves with only two of them. Finally, it was out of character to feel such strong feelings for a girl. A HUMAN girl, no less. I guess all these liberties had to be taken for the episode to even work, but it still felt strange the whole time. Nonetheless, I still liked this episode, just like I did when it aired, albeit differently, in the 1963 show.

This was really good episode, the pacing was suitable, characters were interesting, and the overall setting definitely made for a change in pace. I especially enjoyed the sense of restraint felt.

Honestly a really sweet episode. I actually felt the connection between Atom and Rumy in this one and the semi-romantic theming of Atom leaving her behind for her own good was quite interesting. Only confusing element was why Atom basically just abandoned the slave labour base after rescuing the two of them, when you would normally expect that he would personally take out all of the villains. I suppose it was to keep the focus on the main characters of the episode, but personally I would have taken a final fight in the evil base as opposed to the meaningless islander/blonde lady part.
