So what's the difference between this and a certain scientific railgun. I ask because that one girl is in both, do I need to watch one before the other?

Index is about another story line than railgun, index is more about magic related, railgun is about science and abilities. I first watched index and then railgun

index is the main story. that girl from Railgun is first introduced in Index. after that, the two shows are worth watching back to back cus they take place around the same time.

Index and railgun take place at the same time basically just different perspectives of the same story. Railgun is way better though, but doesn’t make much sense without the context of index.

Railgun is largely its own story with a few times of overlap with index.

@HYPIXS i see a lot of anime onlys with this opinion, but it is mostly false index novel is way better then anything railgun produced. it's more accurate to say index as an anime is being miss managed rather then worse then railgun as a whole.

as far as anime alone goes

index mostly suffers from bad directors who want index to be ecchi and actively cut out important parts to make room for more ecchi rather then things that should have been left in from the novel. (season 1 literally cuts out a lot of important stuff such as a humoculius that was in the 2nd arc and a serial killer that was involved in the angel fall arc both of which helped explain the world more.) however season 3 was the most mishandled where they knew they had time constraints and rather then cut out the non important stuff actively sacrificed the plot to shove in a literal filler ecchi scene in the first episode. (they also shoved literally 2 seasons worth of content into one season. rather then saving it for a 4th season. because they wanted to do NT stuff sooner.)

railgun anime on the other hand produced one of the worst arcs in the series being the fillar arc they had in season 2. which has mostly been reduced to non canon. season 3 ignoring everything that happened in that arc because how bad it was received. So while Railgun outside really really awful filler arcs mostly stays faithful to the source materials with no cuts.

outside the Anime only

there are more memorable moments in index as a whole then railgun. if you don't like reading a lot of words then the Manga is a good subsititue while it does have some early changes (skipping the angel fall arc.) it mostly stays faithful to the source more then the anime has. that said the current manga arc of railgun is kind of bad it seems like the author ran into the issue of not knowing what to do now that railgun has basically reached an impasse. misaka has a much to active roll in index later arcs of OT (season 3 basicly.) and NT (not yet animated. hopefully we get a reboot first.) so they can't really give railgun any future stories unless they don't involve misaka and only focus on kuroko saten and uhiaru pov during the last arcs of OT and i have no idea how they would even fit any stories in durring NT.

the current arc had to go backwards in time and Kuroko saten and Uhiaru arn't even in the current arc it also has dragged on way to long. this arc has been on going since saeson 3 of railgun ended... bleh.

@rohan121 Good luck trying to figure out anything in the jailbreak arc without having vast amounts of knowledge from NT late arc stuff. if either ever gets animated XD

which considering the publisher we might never see because they are adicted to pumping out isekai and have been for almost 5 years now.

on the bright side Yen press did recently license NT so you can soon legally read them in english.

“Evil is created when someone gives up on someone else. It appears when everyone gives up on someone as a lost cause and removes their path to salvation. Once they are cut off from everyone else, they become evil.” -Othinus

TL;DR

Index was first released then Railgun.
Index is the Main Story, and Railgun is a Side Story (or spin-off depending on your person)
Index is after Railgun, and Railgun is before Index.

P.S. I simply watched the series by release order. (of course, some would say the opposite)
It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.
