Another solid episode, hope by now people have understood this series is not about the fighting scenes, but the deep ideology clashes of the late Bakumatsu period. Mc is starting to be less of a cringy kid, he's maturing fast, Saito Hajime is also a great character, like the dynamics between the two. Hijikata is always the goat, of course

I love a lightheart episode like this. To be specific, I love seeing them training shirtlessly, getting sweaty, sumo with each other, and end the day with sleeping together in the same room with futons placed next to each other.

Nio and Hajime save the day! A great episode with a nice heartfelt resolution at the end. Less brutal than last week where they had to dispose of a dead body. Yet still intense as stopping that crazed man from harming his daughter or anyone else. Hajime not really liking Nio at the start of this episode. Hajime of course being the final member of our youngster trio. All of the Miburo are young, probably teens and twenties with maybe the oldest are in their thirties. But Nio, Hajime and Taro are definitely the youngest as early teens and thus will bond together. Hajime and Nio accompanying Hijikata into town. Of course just standing around waiting is interrupted by that man losing his mind since his wife died. Japan was in a big shift in this time period with them opening back up to the rest of the world after centuries of isolation. So I'm sure many people at that time thought like this man that all the change was causing problems. However he clearly took things too far swinging A sword around. Hajime with his pompous attitude toward Nio all episode really showed his sword prowess by stopping the man without killing him as Nio suggested. They both did well resolving this incident. The Miburo getting an audience with some people who could hire them and solve their money problem. Which would open the door to the idea of the Miburo being bought for the highest bidder. That's a very slippery slope that we'll see next episode!

I still don't know what this show is trying to do,there are way too many characters Being introduced at once without proper buildup and while the vibe between nioh and hajime is okay this episode was quite wierd with that Crazy father and his Daughter.
Hope that this improves narrative and Animation wise.

Ah, I could have told him the name of the Enemy: Despair. But they weren't old or sophisticated enough to know that, yet.

You know what, that guy deserved to go to prison. I hope he doesn't hurt his daughter again.

So far I'm not seeing a real plot. Soft sidestories are one thing, but is there a main story?

The Miburo's ways are relentless, that's for sure, but Nio is still at the point where he can only handle the hard training partially.

Nio wanting to spar with Hajime Saito, he's clearly out of his element with the latter hitting him clean slate on the head, because he's the 2nd wolf picked up by Kondo. As a newcomer, Nio may not have any talent when it comes to swordsmanship, but he shows his conviction for the cause. The usual patrol to evade going with Serizawa to meet the representatives of Aizu, Hijikata's content with protecting Kyoto with his life, be fed and sleep well. Hajime being a bona fide samurai, only to attract attention to Nio waning to learn Iai, the latter's a strange one indeed.

A samurai with a child hostage in broad daylight, it's a family affair of Funazo losing his own wife Ofune to sickness, and then dragging his daughter of Misaki being belligerent towards the public, he's making himself look pathetic, which both Hajime and Saito then give chase to free Misaki from his hands and not cause any harm. Funazo being desperate to end his life from the challenges of the state affairs within Kyoto. At least this salvation is salvageable, and Hajime slowly warms up to Nio, alongside Taro.

The power of friendship on display, it's good to see.

Nio progressing from 300 practice swings a day to 1000 a day, on the road to becoming one of the Shinsengumi.
The tag team of Nio and Saitō Hajime take down a disgraced man from harming his daughter and himself.
Perhaps Saitō is only 2 ish years younger than Okita but is just short stack? Lol

Hajime is not someone who gets along with anyone, yet by the end of the episode it seems that he has started to accept Nio. Will they become fast friends or the tension will remain between them would be interesting to find out.

Nio on the other hand continues to show kindness be it someone he just met or someone who's in need of help. The way he instinctively asked that man to let that girl go, just proves that he has a strong sense of justice.
