The objective to raise money for the Miburo's coats, 250 ryo to be exact, it's not a small amount by any means, and forget going back to Chirinuya to earn that money since it's a family business. Of course, everyone earns money in their own ways, like selling their own samurai swords for Sanosuke, only to blow their sell by gambling, and Soji trying to sell smut material.

For Hijikata, trying to sell the sword that Naozumi bent out of shape, only for a woman to approach him having a better offer to bring him to a swordsmith at the back streets, who got told off by her master, he has to entertain their comedy shtick about a rookie smith and an old man still fervent on his swordsmith. Of course, the swords being forged by Sakura, and barring that no one wanted to buy swords forged by women, Hijikata is the first man to judge her skills by merit and not reputation.

Hajime having deep connections of his own, what exactly is he up to to earn money?

Didn't expect this anime to embrace the fact that gender discrimination exist instead of pretending it's not.

It's fun to see Miburo's trying to make money, obviously they're very bad at it, that's why it's very important when they find a master to serve, a master to pay their salary.

I just want to whisper to them that in search for quick money, besides selling a sword, selling a body is always an option, their body, that is... I'm pretty sure many people (including me) are willing to pay high price for them.

The Miburo are all trying to raise money for their coats in their own special way. I liked Sakura and her determination to become a swordsmith.

Good ep, definitely shows how hard being a women could be in these time if you don't embrace the culture surrounding them but like Hijikata says results speak and nothing else, she seems good at her job and that guy risking his business to teach her is a pretty badass move,

overall good episode, one of the best episodic ones i'd even say.

These guys are hopeless, except for Niho & one or two others. Those 2 getting cheated at dice were a good example!

Everyone going out their own ways trying to raise some money. Having appropriate funds is important for any organization to run properly. The episode was very wholesome overall, seeing how each different Miburo member goes about getting money. What each of their principles are and what they view as their marketable skill. The boys trio trying to go to granny's restaurant to work for money made me laugh, she wasn't having any of their nonsense. Hajime going off on his own was interesting, especially given what we see to end the episode. Him going to some power broker or mob boss type woman who hands out dangerous jobs it seems like. I have a feeling that Hajime might get in over his head and Nio will have to bail him out. The portion of this episode with Hijikata looking for a new sword was amazing. I loved seeing him meet that female sword smith and learning her story. Being kicked out by her family simply because she wanted to fall a career path that society deemed not fit for women. Her overcoming that adversity, keeping pursuing her dream, to now seeing someone recognize her skills and take one of her swords. Hijikata might have a gruff exterior but he's a good guy underneath it all..

This episode kicked off with each of the Miburo members finding their own ways to make money. Some were helping out the public, others were gambling, and a few even tried selling the stuff they cooked up (Soji is a real character, lol).

The Miburo split to raise funds for their new uniforms. Nio's grandma will employ Taro if he works for free (that's just slavery but she tries to pass it off as her avoiding nepotism).
Sanosuke pawned his sword for 10 Ryo. How will he strike it rich to buy it back?
Ah, of course gambling, which Shinpachi joins in on.

wtf Okita Sōji was trying to make it rich off drawing tentacle hentai 🤣(The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife by Hokusai came out 49 years before this anime is set btw).

Kondo scared away 2 ryo.

Hijikata bent his katana in his fight with Naozumi. He's in a predicament as he needs both money and a new sword. The shop doesn't have one he can afford. That's when a woman who recognizes him and his group comes offering swords by her teacher "the best swordsmith in Japan".
Yep, I recognize that voice, it's Rie Takahashi! Except this time, she's not kenjutsu instructor Kaoru, but the apprentice swordsmith Sakura.
The swordsmith used to have more customers before they realized a woman was working at his forge, and he's been keeping her around so she forges sword when he's not. Taking one of Sakura's pieces, Hijikata judges the sword by its quality, not by its maker's reputation. Sakura can't help but be grateful as she tears up recalling how she was enchanted by the swordsmith's blade as a young girl and demanded he make her his apprentice. Her teacher said all those years ago that sooner or later they'll realize craft is all about results.

With a customer, Hijikata, choosing a sword that Sakura forged for the first time, the teacher feels proud she has graduated from being an apprentice.

"A bad name? I'm used to it."- Hijikata. He better come back to Sakura for repairs and such, this is a good ship.

Saitō Hajime having conversations with signs and countersigns, that's a future cop in the making. What's this seedy location? Who is she Japanese Polpo? So his real name is Jiro and he used to kill for hire? A young assassin, ironic. If he's Saitō Hajime II (二代目斎藤一), who's Saitō Hajime I and is he still alive? Maybe we should call him Saitō Ni (斎藤二) wwwww

I wanted the money thing to be done in this episode but it looks like it's a whole arc. Well I'm alright with that as, this episode was interesting enough and other who're to come will be as well.

Toshizou just rized that smith girl without even trying. That girl and that smit master are like father and daughter in a sense, he was so happy that someone finally acknowledged her hard work and her fine swords.

It looks like there's a whole history for our little Hajime, and it's not a white one for his age.
