Except for the case of our protagonist, the others have known each other for a long time now (Especially Hiiragi and Umemiya)but they still call eachother by their last names and not their first names?? Why?

(Please correct if I got their first and last names backwards..)

@baymaxemon Not the Japanese order, I'm talking about their actual names like Hajime for Umemiya

Out of respect, I think.

The student body is basically an organization, like military. I know it's a ridiculous concept, but it sure functions like one. They're all there to do a job, often dangerous, and they're talking to squadmates and commanding officers. Might be weird to use first names in that kind of environment. They'd sooner use nicknames.

maybe its a respect thing. we know they all respect umemiya alot so it would he weird for even his closest pal to call him just that in front of people hes supposed to be the leader of. that's a very Asian thing. respect for anyone in a leading position comes first

Calling people in Japan by their given name is considered very rude, even among school mates.
The only exception are family members and very, very close friends.

In anime and probably in real life in Japan, often people didn't call each other by their first name. Here, students also focus on hierarchy, they have their own groups and leaders, so they will address each other more politely even if they are close. It's just a normal thing in their culture and it doesn't surprise anyone there. Often in anime when someone calls someone by their first name it's a surprise for that person and often even react with embarrassment

That’s not uncommon in Japanese culture. And as someone mentioned already, at the end of the day it would be out of respect. You don’t casually just call someone by their first name unless you started as a young child potentially (or with family of course). Using a first name is a sign of affection, and often times you are given permission to do so before even starting. It makes total sense why their first names are not being used, and that goes back to the Senpai-Kouhai (Senior-Junior) relationship. As a younger, you would never refer to someone who is older than you by a first name, as that is a sign of disrespect. It can also be personal preference as well, as some people might be firm in their want to use either-or.

The Japanese are very respectful and private people at the end of the day.

For example, there is a very personal way to say “I love you”, and it is not used very much even amongst married couples.

Just remember, Japan has its own culture, and like any other times we immerse ourselves in a culture that is not our own, we often will not understand or judge because it is not something done in our own culture.

But I digress. It’s good to ask questions rather than to judge. Just because something doesn’t make sense to us, doesn’t mean it doesn’t make sense at all. I’m not sure how long you’ve been watching anime for, but this is something you’ll just get used to overtime! Doing your own research also helps a lot (that’s something I do), to better understand things you’re not used to. I’m still learning plenty myself!

Sorry for the rant, hope this helped out in any way.
