Yeah that was about what I expected, it'll be interesting to see how he rediscovers himself from this.

Devastating chapter, and a realization that I'm willing to bet many many creatives have and will continue to face - the reality that art is inherently lonely. Yatora is faced with a depressing realization, that no one can have your determination, no one can stand beside you and the very thing that makes creating so personal and so special is what also causes it to move you in a way only you know. You can admire, you can share, you can even push others forward yet in the end your art is yours alone. Seeing others around you drop one by one, people who seemed insurmountable now falling to what in your eyes looks simple and easy, it's an easy festering ground for all sorts of survivor's guild or imposter syndrome or whatever you want to call it. Ultimately there is only one way to call it - painful.

Focusing on what you alone consider skill is easy, it's much harder to recognize that ultimately ability is as able as the amount of time it can develop and grow. That burden and the willingness to carry it is an ability in and of itself, and few possess it, even fewer are allowed to take advantage of it in our social structures. Mori becomes a "full-fledged adult" and a respectable member of society by relinquishing her creativity, by potentially submitting to hours of unfulfillment and wasted potential. Yet again, potential only exists as long as the willingness to continue does as well. Yet it seems she as well feels partially unaware as to why she has to abandon her love, outside of superficial senseless reasons.

Lastly and perhaps most importantly, Saeki-sensei's positing shows how narrow-minded the last two paragraphs can end up becoming. Love for creating and for art can be shown in many ways, there is no right and wrong way to go about loving. In teaching a determined high-schooler, Yatora both sees the kind of impact sensei's work can express, while understanding why she can do it and he likely never will. He can never stay outside the battlefield, his heart belongs there even if he started drawing after everyone else. He can cry and be hurt by people leaving and hurt himself over how undeserving he feels to stay in his positing, yet he will not run away, it's simply not possible for someone who feels such a strong need to fight despite all that pain to keep that passion as a hobby. For me, the most important line in the whole chapter is this: "It takes talent to turn your passion into a job, but it takes just as much talent to keep it as a hobby".

For those of us who can't stay away from the path of constant deadlines and budget limitations, we have no choice but to keep creating, even if there is no one waiting at the end.
For those who have the skill and drive to continue loving and fighting even outside the fear and praise of the public eye, continue loving your talent and godspeed.
