I rate this 8/10,

One doesn't need to be an edgy teenager to enjoy this anime, it's overall a fun-to-watch and simple battle fantasy anime :)

I mean, I watched this as an 15 year old edgy teenager and found it very mid.
Though I did find the first episode somewhat cathartic.

it's just "okay" like a solid 5/10 show. I can't remember the name of a single character other than akame and esdeath. most characters would get introduced and then die in their first or second fight but it tried making the deaths seem sad to the viewer. I don't think almost anyone even had a backstory or their motives for anything really explained, most characters were just kinda there. there were a loooot of unexplained things or plot threads they just went no where with. like the main boy has a random gay dream about a guy in his squad and it's never brought up or mentioned again and he's straight for the rest of the show haha. the powers are so lame, like one of the main villains just has a flamethrower.
some characters are hyped for so long and die in such boring ways. some characters genuinely serve no purpose other than more canon fodder to die on screen. I don't regret watching it overall it's one of those fun put on in the background shows but absolutely wouldn't watch it again over anything else I rank above it

Agreed. If I rated it now, I’d say it’s objectively a 6 or 7, but back in middle school it was one of the first anime I’d ever seen, and one of the first edgy and “mature”(in quotes because it’s not mature at all, but I sure thought it was then) shows I’d watched. Definitely a 10/10 if I had to rate it on nostalgia alone.

Even as not an edgy teenager it's still somewhat decent. The biggest problem is anime original ending. Best part about this anime was obviously Esdeath. Sadly, she couldn't be fixed.
If you want an actual, edgy anime, then you should check out Kingdom of Ruin, which is by the same author.

Kingdoms of Ruin is edgy in the worst meaning of the word. It’s like a 13 year-old wrote it during their emo phase. The writing is terrible and I hate the author for actually coming up with an interesting concept because that’s what kept my hopes up as I tried to slog through that dumpster fire.

This anime is objectively horrible because of its terrible writing but when you're a teenager you tend to ignore bad writing. Still you have no media literacy

I mean while i wouldn’t consider this anime a flawless masterpiece, it was detailed, exciting and fun. Definitely better than Frieren, so by that comparison it should be the top ranked anime on this site.
