This felt like a fated meeting between Hanako and that mysterious girl. Definitely not your typical meeting considering how Shiori just emerged out like that.

Loved the style of the visual quality so far. The OP song is a catcher too. Pretty much just the introductory episode for now but lot of potential here, especially for Shiori's character. They're definitely going to take time to develop their relationship.

“She might let me die.”
Uh... you do know you don’t actually need her permission for that, right? If you really wanted to die, you could just... well, you know. And yeah, I get that when you’re depressed it’s incredibly hard to look beyond yourself. But I still hope one day you’ll be able to look up and see that there’s someone who truly cares about you, someone who’d be devastated if you just gave up on living. And okay, I’m just going to assume by “want to eat her” she means ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Still, it’s hard to find reasons to live when you’ve lost your entire family so young and are left alone in this cruel world. I just hope her mindset changes as the story goes on. Honestly, I’m expecting a 180 plot twist at the end, I’ve got a bad feeling this might either dive into heavy drama or end with the monster abandoning her. Either way, if it wasn’t obvious already, yeah... this one definitely has yuri vibes. Starts off grim, with main girl here losing both parents and openly longing for death.

Seems like this might be a more depressing, emotionally heavy story and honestly I’m here for it. I’m really curious to see where it goes.

If you feel like you didn't have enough with last season's Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu a.k.a The Summer Hikaru Died in the supernatural BL space, mangaka Sai Naekawa's series will fill you with similar supernatural emotions and feelings, but of the Yuri kind.

Yoshino's OP is kinda OK...

The girl who lives alone by the sea after the passing of her parents and her big brother, Hinako Yaotose's life has been nothing but a monotonous tragedy, at least for the Summer seasons she's been dreading, to want to pass sooner. Even with her good friend of Miko Yashiro who tries to strike small talk and keep her entertained at times, Hinako's inner life feels like it's constantly within the deepest depths of the sea, thanks to a girl who stopped her from falling into the ocean on the way to school, who made her feel that way since then.

As if that's not strange enough, strands of hair from the sea belonging to an underwater Iso-onna yokai capturing Hinako out of nowhere and sinking into her own consciousness, it's thanks to the same girl who rescued her; her true self being a mermaid monster, claiming her ownership of Hinako and the respite to consume her after longing for her for the longest time. However, the mermaid-human hybrid herself determining the time of her death and to keep remaining fresh until her consumption, as fate would have it, Shiori Oumi being the new transfer student of her class, the smell of the sea will never ever be far from Hinako, that she can finally have a reason to die for.

Reina Ueda's ED is just as harmlessly lovely alright, a smooth song.

Swap out the BL, and in for the Yuri, keep the supernatural theme going strong, This IS a dark horse of the season.

One high quality yuri show just ended, and now we are getting another one. Great! :)

Interesting and mysterious start here.

Hinako and Shiori would make an adorable couple. Just don't eat Hinako, ok? :P

And Miko is very a cute and funny girl. I like her type of airhead characters.

Pretty interesting 1st episode,
Hinako motivation to live now is basically to stay alive until Shiori eats her. I wonder how Miko fits in all this.

Peak yuri back on the menu boys. We have been fed so well this year with yuri and we’re still going strong. Amazing start. Will be top 3 of the season easily. Love the girls, the atmosphere, the symbolism and set up. Very impressed with the premiere.

“I came here to eat you” lesbians are so extra lmao. The way Shiori, who represents the ocean, something Hinako feared, becomes her salvation is so poetic. Truly the yuri of all time. I love a bit of toxic romance with murderous inclinations.

Speaking of the ocean, it’s cool how they use water to depict Hinako’s depression and how she feels smothered in social settings. She just can’t find happiness or enjoyment out of casual small talk like girls her age normally would. She’s fine when Miko is there, but when Miko’s gone, she’s drowning, unable to breathe. This was a nice introduction episode to Hinako’s mental state, the unique relationship between she and Shiori and the supernatural stuff.

Great year for supernatural LGBTQ stories with TSHD just ending and getting s2, and a great week for girls named Hinako in supernatural stories with SHF lol.

The OP and ED are so gorgeous!!

I don't think it's gonna resonate with anyone outside yuri fans or yuri-bait fans. Such a shame because I think this might be the composer Keiji Inai's best soundtrack yet, but he alone cannot carry the whole anime. The soundtack alone cannot compensate for the lack and the mistake of other departments

Loving the eerie vibe of this show. The Animation looks beautiful and the music too.
Shiori must have saved Hinako when she lost her family but I guess she wants to eat her after Hinako regains her will to live. If that's the case, then Shiori is the absolute worst. Miko seems like a good friend but it's obvious she is hiding something from Hinako.
Three of my favorite voice actors voicing these girls was what made me watch this one.

The plot is weird but not bad!

Shiori and Hinako are good, but I liked Riko more......
I need somebody who can love me at my worst
No, I'm not perfect, but I hope you see my worth
'Cause it's only you, nobody new, I put you first
And for you, girl, I swear I'll do the worst

If you stay forever, let me hold your hand
I can fill those places in your heart no else can
Let me show you love, oh, I don't pretend, yeah
I'll be right here, baby, you know I'll sink or swim

This felt to be as an old anime' watcher, like it had some callbacks to an old Rumiko Takahashi series, Mermaid's Forest. But with a more modern tone. And a really melancholy atmosphere. I feel for this girl, I lived through some stuff like this. I know those feelings of just wanting to go away & having the pain stop.
Will Shiori make good on that promise to eat her? This is interesting. May be my number one dark fantasy for the Fall Season right now.

"She might let me die."

This was quite the striking premiere, showcasing Hinako's depressive state, and the characters around her. Reina Ueda voicing Hinako was an excellent casting choice, because her soft tone of voice acting can reflect sadness and pain very well. A yuri horror series is not something you see very often, so I'm very interested to see how this turns out.

From this first impression, I liked the visuals and directing, even if the animation itself was rather plain. The colours were vivid and from that, the emotions of Hinako were depicted as well as the horror, and the quiet atmosphere stood out even more. Not completely sold yet, but I'm pretty excited about this anime.

Pretty haunting OP. Losing her parents at such a young age is harsh. Still Hinako's lucky to have a friend like Miko thats always has her back. But man that sure was an ugly suitor that crept out of the shadows lol. Still quite the omnimous declaration of intent from her savior Shiori. Who also happens to transfer in as well lol.

@RobertBobert It probably depends a little on your definition of horror, but there is definitely more of the vibe of this episode coming up. The supernatural, somewhat unsettling and a touch psychological horror. From what I understand, that stands out markedly more than any of the romance does, but will have to see how the Anime goes.

Alright we got The Summer Shiori Ate for everyone who needed more horror romance after last season. I read the first 11 chapters of this ahead of today and it is every bit as good as "Hikaru". The focus here is more on the relationship between the three main characters than the supernatural storyline, but you still get a fair amount of both with an interesting twist that "Hikaru" did not have. Hinako is arguably more depressed than Yuushiki—and for good reason as she lost more than one loved-one.

Here comes the next instalment of the 6 million GL anime which got announced earlier this year this is probably my third most anticipated GL which had been announced for a adaptation

So I've been following this anime/manga for like a year and a half+ I was originally gonna read the manga and when I finally decided to give it a read the anime got announced the same week so I just decided to wait for the anime.

I pride myself in not being spoiled at all on this so literally all I came into this knowing is there's a monster, a depressed girl and its a GL.

So if im being honest after watching this I can confidently say this does not or at least the first episode did not feel like a GL at all or even a romance. If im being honest this felt like a horror anime more than anything. Idk if it is under that genre but I havent watched a horror in a while so I kinda hope it is. This anime feels like a mixture of Mieruko-chan and Another in a weird way. Like genuinely the only GL vibe I got from this anime was the ending song/visuals that screamed GL to me.

Other than that this whole episode, the vibe, the small cast, especially the opening just screams horror to me more than anything and holy hell the opening song is incredible like dam what a amazing song, reminded me a little of Another's opening sound wise.

The overall quality of this anime feels really good, I get the feeling its gonna have a very small cast so that's personally a plus for me. Hina, Shiori and Miko are all very compelling characters in their own way.

The plots a fairly simple one, Hina wants to die after she lost her family, more or likely she's afraid of dying herself since I mean if she wasn't surly she'd have just killed herself by now and Shiori wants to devour her, idk why she'd wait though but I mean hell we need a plot. Im curious what kind of role Miko will have in this beyond just a close friend or hell maybe that will be it.

I will genuinely be surprised and pretty disappointed if this just turns into a romance between Hina and Shiori. Not that that's bad but this has some extreme potential to be something incredible.

I'd also love to know once the anime ends from a manga reader if this was a faithful adaptation. I still got PTSD over whisper me a love songs adaptation

Amazing first episode

Horror❌ Yuri horror✅
Been waiting for this for sometime hopefully it will deliver peak yuri with more messed up style.

Suicidal girl and murderous girl what could go wrong..

I will be happiest to die in the hands of Shiori. It will great simping for her😭❤️

I can feel for Hinako wanting to die thinking it's worthless to live without loved ones. Can't blame her. And her heart in ocean sounds very intresting.

Brilliant start. Expecting it to be very good. Hopefully it doesn't let down.

I agree that the soundtrack is an absolute standout, carries a lot of the atmosphere.
We'll see about the rest - I feel like there a some people involved who really like and respect the source material and that can make a difference in the long run.
I'm concerned about how much of a budget the show has tho, that's the one thing I would criticize for a first episode, you could tell they were cutting costs on animation whenever possible - but tbh some of it works cause Hinako being so depressed is a plausible explanation for her not noticing her peers much /certain scenes looking pretty static.
I chased fame, fortune and CANDY during MALoween 23

@RobertBobert The Sea Hag wasn't horror enough for you? I don't know why there isn't a Horror tag on this on Crunchyroll considering we have yokai with ill intent & one FMC with questionable intentions of her own to the other MC. Quiet horror may not always be a thing these days, but was once quite common in novels & short stories.

@ShiroAlex Yep. Japanese Mermaids never met Walt Disney or those Western movies never would have been made. Then again, most old mermaid tales are like Grim's Fairy Tales, a lot darker than what we in the West have been fed in the last 5 or 6 decades.

@Sheol01 Horror is a genre and a format, not just some paranormal spooky setting or characters. That's why I ask, because paranormal drama isn't horror by default yet.
