Shinzawa serialized the original 3-nen Kimengumi (Third Year Funny-face Club) manga in Weekly Shounen Jump from October 1980 to April 1982, followed by the High School! Kimengumi sequel manga in the same magazine from April 1982 to July 1987. Shueisha published the 20th and final volume in February 1988.

The original television anime produced by Gallop and Studio Comet aired in 86 episodes from Fall 1985 to Fall 1987. The side story movie opened in Japan in July 1986.

REMOW streamed the original High School! Kimengumi anime on its Anime YouTube channel with English subtitles in the U.S and Canada.

Synopsis
Rei Ichidou, Gou Reietsu, Kiyoshi Shusse, Jin Daima, and Dai Monohoshi are five mischievous boys attending Ichiou Junior High. Each with an eccentric personality and a knack for chaos, they've earned a reputation as the infamous "Kimen-gumi."

One day, new transfer student Yui Kawa and her friend Chie Uru encounter the group and soon find themselves drawn into their antics. Around them are other colorful cliques—from the handsome "Iro Otoko-gumi" led by Shou Kireide, to the delinquent "Ban-gumi" led by You Nihiruda, the athletic "Ude-gumi" led by Kai Undou, and the tough girl squad "Onna-gumi" led by Jako Amano.

As time passes and a new spring begins, the everyday lives of these eccentric students unfold in a lively and comedic school story.

@EcchiGodMamster yessir, they'll just adapt some manga chapters, it's the usual comedic episodic show but I can't understand what was the incentive to make an anime outta kimengumi in 2026

Oh wow, had to drop this series because there weren't many subbed episodes, but great to see a remake.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

@Catalano I'm wondering if this will be a remake in the style of the new Rumiko anime, or if we'll get a reboot set in modern times?

@RobertBobert I remember there was the same thought in regards to urusei but we saw what happened afterwards so I guess this adaptation will be the same, nothing modern but they will definitely remove some obscure 80s references like when they constantly made fun of actors and tv shows. I wouldn't mind anyways because Flash Kimengumi (2001-2005) manga exists.
Let's just wait for another pv, this video was just a presentation if I can put it like that

@Catalano I have nothing against the '80s, quite the contrary. But I have mixed feelings about titles that were never anthems of their era now trying to make a big deal out of it. It's like we got a DMC adaptation with constant references to the Iraq War and nu-metal as the soundtrack.... oh yeah...

Not a fan of the artstyle but it's nice to see Seki Tomokazu get a main (or a least an important) role. He's hardly in anything these days.

@RobertBobert I know I know, I got it, I was just explaining. I wouldn't say kimengumi was the biggest thing in its era but it certainly was damn popular, mangaka even explains at the end of a volume that the readers complained about the fact that the volumes were bought too quickly off the shelves, it did fairly well in it time and it got 86 episodes in prime time. It may not be known in the west except france but it was big in japan.

maybe the bigshots wanna make some money outta gag anime considering they compete against no one LOL, they saw urusei and ranma were decent in reception so why not

@Catalano So, do you think a strong focus on nostalgia would make sense given that this work was so trend-setting in its time?

@RobertBobert of course, that's their best card, you can see that by the song played in the video, it's the famous first OP of the original, they even attracted me and I hate remakes LOL

@Catalano Well, I'll give it a try, even though my knowledge of 80s anime is limited to mecha and cowboy cop action shows.

They're currently releasing a subbed version of the original anime on nyaa, if anybody is interested. I got interested in the original because I saw Onyanko Club performing the OP of the show as guests in Sukeban Deka II, but I never checked it out. I would also suggest to avoid episodes 73-80 as they seem to be written by Naruhisa Arakawa, whose Space Sheriff movies are absolute shit like it's shit Kamen Rider Kuuga and it was shit Blue Seed. Watch Abaranger once of the guy and then move on when you see his credits as the playwriter because it's the only good thing he ever wrote in his whole life, like Denny O' Neil with the 70's Batman.

Oh yeah I also have zero interest to speak of in this remake like I had no interest whatsoever in the Ranma 1/2 Remake or the Akage No Anne continuation/remake, or the HNK remake. Couldn't the japanese simply state "sorry guys, we have zero original ideas to speak of in this moment, get back in ten/twenty years and maybe, just maybe we will have something new to show you, something worth of your time"? people constantly shit on Hollywood and the likes, but anime studios are the same exact level of Hollywood productions as they are now. Between this and barf like Tron: Ares I don't see any difference conceptually speaking, minus the live-action medium and Jared Leto inbetween. The lack of ideas behind is the same one.
