Not in theaters. They have probably shown it at a film festival. It should be released to the public in november.

Saw it last night, easily his worst movie. Not terrible, but definitely not good. 5/10

So funny to watch the dance scene in ChaO yesterday and then compare it to the dance scene in this today 🤮

"Another visually impressive but narratively forgettable baroque fantasy"
Yeah... Looked like it from the trailers.

I've been feeling like Hosoda has lost the plot, he has so many artists and fancy tech that he forgot how to tell a story. Mirai felt kinda confused, and Belle was an absolute mess.

"Wolf Children" and "The Boy and the Beast" were both great, story wise and visually. How come everything they did after that turned out mediocre?
From the trailer it looks like this is mostly CGI?

Japanese twitter has been absolutely savage about this movie. I wasn't interested in seeing it because I find modern Hosoda to be mediocre (especially compared to his earlier great works like his One Piece movie and Summer Wars), but now I'm curious from just how violently negative the reaction has been.

Japan hates it. I haven't liked his movies after Wolf Children. He's done.

I'll be completely honest, I still really don't get what people find so bad about Belle. I watched it a while ago and thought it was just forgettable at worst.

I would say the biggest reason is that all of Hosoda's most praised movies were written by Satoko Okodera, but after Wolf Children, Hosoda started writing all of his movies himself.

Came here to post this. Kinda funny, because I still remember the time when I considered Hosoda as a créme de la créme of this medium and not that self-proclaimed herald of mediocrity who he has become.

damn, it looked good, visuals and designs wise, more consistent than belle (given the more grounded setting). If its really bad like Belle then that sucks cus the animators and artists clearly know what they are doing

@Oongbuh

Its just a nonsensical movie all together, the plots and themes it explores are kinda rushed and genuinely stupid bad in its execution, like legit, its a bundle of random shit like Ready Player One (which is a worse movie than Belle, Belle isn't that bad)

Belle was more of an excuse to make a musical movie to flex animation and vocal talent in several languages, but the plot of it its all over the place and doesn't understand what it wants to do with it's setting, somehow a serial doxxer is hailed as a honorable cyber police guy? with sponsors and all?

Yeah not just bad reviews but it's also a complete flop in terms of ticket sales.

@Chipp12 well, Mamoru HOSODA doesn’t deserve an Oscar nomination then.

HACKs! 🤢🤮

I watched the film, and I have to admit: if the reviews are bad, they’re absolutely deserved.

There’s no real plot to speak of. Everything feels naïve, often downright ugly, drowned in uneven CGI. Sometimes the visuals are fine, but just as often they’re jarringly poor. It’s obvious the screenwriter thought in terms of isolated “scenes” rather than an actual story. He seems to create random situations just to force in a moment he had in mind, with zero regard for overall coherence.

And the clichés… The clichés... At least it had the decency to make me laugh out loud during the main character’s final speech : the classic “good is good and evil is evil!” delivered with absolute sincerity.

I honestly don’t know how Mamoru-san can get away with releasing something like this in 2025. It took him 4 years to make...

EDIT : Forgot to say that the voice acting was horrible. Except for the grave diggers that showed up for 40 seconds. They had WONDERFUL Voices.

This just released at my country's local theatres today and after reading reviews from people here... I'm now torn whether should I still go or not.

I had a gut feeling when I saw the trailer that this might gonna get messy but I thought that "At least the visuals and sounds will make up for it like Belle" but after reading one of the reviews that the visuals also poor... Damn.

But I THINK I might still go, I watched Uchiage Hanabi at the theater back then and I'm one of the 0,0001% that thinks it wasn't that bad (Because I overthink the plot and make my own speculations/interpretations on that movie)

Soo yeah, I probably still gonna go.

But I had to agree the last 2 movies of Mamoru Hosoda was mediocre, Mirai is one hell of a mixed bag I couldn't even come with my own interpretations but visuals is still great, Belle literally has no meaningful plot but the OST and visuals made it quite worthwhile.

Now this... I'm really torn after I read that the visuals on this is poor.

@EgatammaN I just watched this on IMAX and thought the visuals were pretty good on IMAX. The fights and scenery were very big. Due to the CG style of animation it's not very detailed I guess?

Overall I'm in agreement though, the story and premise didn't make sense to me and distracted me from the enjoying the movie. The sound effects were pretty sweet, and I thought the storyboarding/directing was good as well. It executed things well but the story and characters themselves are lacking.

Feels like most people shitting on this movie are just CGI-haters in general. I watched the trailer again yesterday and I think the movie looks great. Character-designs are fantastic. Music is superb. I'm not expecting a masterful story, but let's not pretend like other anime-movies have told great stories in recent times.
If you haven't watched "Fantastic Children", don't talk about "best anime". Thank you.

@tr25a3 it’s because he’s lost his fastball. It happens to the best. Notice how directors like Ridley Scott or writers like Neal Stephenson just can’t seem to produce great things anymore? Everyone has a time limit, and Hosuda simply hit his.

@SoloNecromancer
Just saw it today in Seattle.
It sucked. But it's watchable to appreciate the nice action scenes and battle scenes if you're a fan of that.

It's a background movie where you watch the pretty dang good action and zone back out. Not enough action though. Maybe only 10 minutes of action added together in the 5 or 6 chapters with it?

Oh man the writing was terrible. Lots and lots of fill in the blanks where they just make a huge leap out of nowhere.

I put out a review on the movie here.
