This anime has such the authentic feeling to it. It's almost as if this is a story written 200 years ago, in the Edo period itself, but in fact it's just 20, which is still old but not as old as its impression gives me.

I feel like we got the bad ending... There must have been a better way...
Maybe Ichitarō could have continued talking with it after it knew there is no Han-gon left in the world...
Maybe he could have convinced it to go back to it's original form to repair it and help it start a new life...
Him basically killing it is just... sad...

It was infuriating to see Nikichi and Sasuke STILL tell Ichitarou to go back to bed and leave the fire alone, even at the cost of many people's lives. And this is after the previous episode when they collectively decided to take responsibility and kill this thing. At least Ichitarou made good arguments and forced them to do as he says.

Anyway, decent climactic showdown. Unfortunately Nikichi and Sasuke were practically useless.

We got to hear what Ichitarou's been thinking all this time, and I liked the line, "I want the strength to accept things, even if they're uncomfortable." But I don't think that talk was ever going to work on a failed spirit that has been going to insane lengths to stay alive. Like literally setting the entire town on fire.

From the slow burn to the fast one... the regret and pain of existing foretold.

@leonardobarba True, but it doesn't make it less sad...

Poor Nikichi and Sasuke. Hopefully this isn't the end for them, but if they did die at least they died protecting Ichitaro. I don't know the lore for when a youkai dies, but if they cross over to the other side, maybe Nikichi could at least reconnect with Ichitaro's grandmother? That whole Cooper family ended up being trouble. The daughter and mother wanted to ultimately set up and betray Matsunosake a few episodes back. The head clerk was serial killing cats. And now Yokichi presumably just killed Matsunosake. Although, not ultimately his fault since he was possessed by the failed tsukumogami. But everyone in that family ended up causing Matsunosake nothing but trouble. Hopefully we find out that he survived somehow, and can maybe connect with Ichitaro.

With the fire starting near Matsunomake's workplace, and the amulets at least working their money's worth, it's still a mystery as to how the failed tsukumogami would device reaching close to Ichitaro in the first place. At the same time, the fire reaching Azuma-ya that the owners still want to retrieve their belongings, it's worsening at a rate where people are already dead from the blazing inferno. And the failed tsukumogami is not the only one at hand who caused this, with the mure itachi also lending their assistance to destroy alongside its main proprietor vessel through Yokichi, both the inugami and hakutaku tried their best, but it ultimately proved futile.

Both the tailsman and the small dagger ended up worth its use after all, as the failed tsukumogami went around possessing people and talking others down for trying to settle itself, and Ichitaro believing it would be best to talk to it and reconcile with his beliefs, it ended up working as the young master intended, to seal the spirit with both the tailsman and the dagger.

The trouble of finding the culprit this long, is finally over...

Damn, this episode was actually GOATed. The animation, the writing, the confrontation… I enjoyed every minute of it!
