Yokohama Station SF
| A very enjoyable collection of short stories featuring the inhabitants of the Yokohama Station, the JR North and JR Kyushu that take place prior to Hiroto's adventure. I actually enjoyed this volume way more than the last volume. I feel like the world of Yokohama Station lends itself more to anthology collections exploring the world, more than a single over-arching story-line. There's definitely more potential stories to be told, especially the events that take place after Program 42 (A reference to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy ?) was launched. We also never do learn anything in depth about Yukie... The afterword to this volume was just bizarre LOL. |
| This wasn't bad but felt like a waste of time. My first gripe is that the first novel as an interesting idea that it abandoned before it can be fully explored (Yokohama Station is "shut down" and we never see what's exactly the aftermath). Now this book instead of following up on that is an anthology of stories set before the previous book and you do get some interesting ideas, like how the Dodger Alliance was singled out by Yokohama Station's AI, but that never gets explored. Then you have some other interesting set ups like the android who developed free will and bailed or the case of the Statation apparently managing to duplicate a dead child (Something that as far as we know is impossible), but that also never gets explored. For me the most interesting one was probably the murder mystery, though that almost has no sci-fi factor. So all in all I really don't get what the author was going for here, except for a quick cash-in. |
