We all know that the native isekai genre has gotten really popular in recent years, and Frieren seems to be the most popular example of a native isekai anime, so tell me, do you think that Frieren is the best native isekai we've gotten? Would it be possible to get a better native isekai than Frieren?

Imma assume that native isekai is just another word for fantasy. And going off that assumption, I’d say in my opinion that it is the best one we’ve gotten. It’s got a good story, characters, fight scenes and good animation. And I don’t see a difference fantasy anime topping that anytime soon.

Edit: After checking other anime that falls in that category I realized that one piece completely slipped my mind. One piece my goat.

I’m assuming you meant fantasy and I would say Frieren is one of the best out there but for the very best in my opinion would go to Violet evergarden.

Elves and magic =/= Isekai

Isekai is when a person ends up in another world, usually by dying in their home world.

B8 or no, Frieren is classical fantasy goodness. Tolkien would be proud of Himmel the elf chaser.

Isekai is not the same as reincarnation. it literally means "another world". reincarnation is just one of many ways to go there.

To be clear, the Japanese word ็•ฐไธ–็•Œ just means "another world", so all fantasy worlds falls into that realm.

BUT, when we talk about anime, isekai takes on a different connotation. Specifically referring to reincarnation or travel to another world.

IMO OP is trying to be edgy and came up with a weird way to say something that we already have a word for. Like stupid censoring words like "Unalive". We all know through context what they meant.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

As everyone else has said, this is NOT an isekai, the isekai genre literally just means going to another world, whether that be through death and reincarnation as is common, or various other methods like getting transported there via magic. Frieren has taken place on the same world throughout the entire show, so it's not an isekai. Even an anime like Dr Stone isn't an isekai, yeah, it's basically whole different world in terms of how it is to live on, but it's still the same world so it's not and isekai.

Isekai is such a generic genre in terms of what it can apply to, it's really not just those fantasy shows where the MC reincarnates and is OP. Those are just what's common, if an author wanted to, they could write an Isekai that's totally different from what we usually get because the only thing that makes something an Isekai is whether or not the show is about going to another world.
I like to watch some anime, I like to talk about some anime, I dislike wars over some anime, but more than anything I love to live my life, anime is an enjoyable and entertaining addition onto my life but it's not my whole life.

Like I said in now-deleted other thread, Mods will have to drop month-long (or perma) ban hammers on people, otherwise we'll have 1 clown after another with threads such as this, every single day. Especially since the show is currently #1 on MAL.

Kinda ironic that this OP mentions "native isekai" for frieren, and then there's this other reddit post from 1 year ago that also mentions native isekai for frieren: https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/1bmd7wd/native_isekai_anime_like_frieren/

This has got to be a troll thread

1) It's called fantasy
2) 90% of the highly rated shows on MAL and in general discourse are fantasy, so asking this question will never get you a straight answer.

Incredible bait, people should learn from this. Watching people get pedantic and losing their minds over the term "native isekai" is hella funny though. It literally means "feels like isekai, but isn't one", a long-winded way of saying "fantasy world".

Third best, right below Ishuzoku Reviewers and Dungeon Meshi.

But I'm not sure Frieren is a native isekai: I would have been 100% sure if it had videogame UIs with stats and levels (one magic map that looks "too digital" isn't enough) and something like a harem for the mc, without those things it's just a fantasy inspired by Dragon Quest and D&D.

To be fair, the concept of native isekai could make sense since it would be the same logic as space Western (set in the space but with themes and tropes taken from the Western genre). The problem is that it only exists for ragebaiting.

@SPCTRE Isekai just means "different world", nothing about the word itself denotes reincarnation.

It's just that reincarnation is the most common way authors use to move characters to that "different world".

People cry about "native isekai" as a concept but don't suggest a better word for the subgenre of fantasy that is clearly inspired much more by RPGs than mythology. I think it's because there isn't one and native isekai fits it well

@butahime
Because "Isekai" by definition of the term is a subgenre of fantasy where someone from our world is transported to another world in some shape or form.
It just does not fit for shows like Frieren.
Nothing wrong with just calling Frieren a fantasy series, that genre term served well for decades before "Isekai" was even a thing.

"Native Isekai" is a oxymoron.

@Ogami1978 As I said in my previous comment, it's not an oxymoron because a similar concept already exists (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Western).

The problems are that the concept of native isekai:
- isn't distinct enough from "fantasy inspired by Dragon Quest and D&D"
- it's being used only for ragebaiting

Isekai means another world. The Isekai genre is for shows where the main character is transported to a different world (stuff like the usual isekai slop, Tensura, Mushoku, Re Zero).

Frieren is no isekai. Danmachi is no isekai. Shows like that are just fantasy.

@Nirinbo One would almost think both "Western" and "isekai" refer to whole genres with respective suites of conventions and audience expectations and not to the hyperliteral application of a broad premise

Isekai is when people get sent to some alternate dimension via dying.
No one gets sent to an alternate dimension in Frieren.
