I've never seen a 9 episode season before. Looked through my list, and I've literally never listed an entry with 9 episodes in any format, not just TV.

10 episode seasons on the other hand are rather common, but honestly pushing the limit of what you could call a "season".

9 episodes to me has got more of an OVA vibe than a full season (although I do know it's actually aired on TV).

It does make sense with how they seem to have split the upcoming arc into setup (9eps) and climax (movie) though, so I'm sure they're cooking regardless.

Either way I'm looking forward to more Medalist, this series is amazing.

if u count the season plus movie as two cours with a mid season break, it's the same 13 episode thing.

Never heard of a one year long mid season break though, not even during the covid days.

I guess the closest thing that comes to mind is kimisen s2, which lost all of its rep in what can only be described as the worst fuck up in anime production history.

I hope that this is a planned, calculated money milking endeavor and not that they realized late that they couldn't finish the whole show in tv format, so they decided last minute to turn the last part into a movie. A distinct possibility given that absolutely nobody saw that movie announcement coming, and they made it even before the season started as if to prepare the audience for the short episode count.

@IhnalakoKaina I'd assume it's more about the necessary amount of episodes to cover the whole arc would be awkwardly large, so instead of making it 1,5 cours or something, they split it up to give themselves some time to work on the arc climax, while also being the financially more lucrative option as well

kind of like WataNare did

Not exactly your point but Zom 100 and Uncle Isekai both had season delays along with Chitose Is in the Ramune Bottle recently. I’d much rather get an up front notice of a delay between release than expect the season to finish this season to find out it’ll be half a year later.

The actual counter point would be as follows

demon slayer had a couple seasons with less than 10 episodes (they had long first episodes so maybe it’s actually 10 in screen time based on 23 minute episodes though)

Our love has always been 10 centimeters apart. This is the only one that’s undoubtedly less than 10 with 6 23 minute episodes.

Psycho Pass season 3 was 8 but these were all 45 minute episodes so technically 16 episodes worth of normal screentime

Here are some for you:

Galaxy Angel Z (2002)
Love Love? (2004)
REC (2006)
Sora o Miageru Shoujo no Hitomi ni Utsuru Sekai (2009)
Mukashi no Yoshida-kun: Himitsukessha Taka no Tsume Gaiden (2012)
Hi Score Girl II (2019)

I personally recommend REC:

It's crazier when nobody even bother to think it's budget and staff issues and Studio ENGI's history?

@IhnalakoKaina Blue Lock S2 would like to have a word with Kimisen S2 please.
I like to watch some anime, I like to talk about some anime, I dislike wars over some anime, but more than anything I love to live my life, anime is an enjoyable and entertaining addition onto my life but it's not my whole life.

@AnonZXM This is NOT a budget or staff issue, it's very clearly an intentional decision made to put the next arc in a movie. Not that hard to realize, what else would they do, make 3 filler episodes to bring the number to 12?

Even though I'd prefer if it had a standard cour length just so we got more stuff to watch, it'd've been pretty poetic if it had just one less episode for a "Figure 8" count

It's not like it never happened before though. Other users have given examples so you can look them up yourself.
