First let me say everyone has different opinions there are no right and wrong answers. Please be respectful of others.

My partner and I both read the Manga a while back and were looking forward to Maki's fight. I personally thought it was pretty good. There were a couple of questionable animated scenes (like Naoya running in the water) and some questionable insert song choices but overall I didn't think it was that bad.

My partner however was disappointed and felt like it could of been better. Especially with it being one of the better fights in the culling game arc. And with how well they animated other battle scenes my partner felt like it wasn't bad but still disappointed.

Of course I want the animators to go home and see their families lol. I am just curious what others opinions are? If you felt it was done well or underwhelming as well?

Once again everyone has different opinions please no hate in this forum and please be respectful of others opinions.

The animation quality is objectively great. Whether one likes the style or not is subjective. I personally really liked it, it was super cinematic and cool.

I know you asked manga readers, but as an anime only, I really enjoyed it. One of my favorite episodes of the series. I also *really* enjoyed the soundtrack choices. I loved the dissonant feelings it gave when played over all that bloodshed. Maki is also probably my favorite character, so I might be a little biased.

@ArthurBedlam Hey anime only fans are welcomed! I just said manga because I figured those who read the Manga had a certain view of how it would go in their mind. The osts were nice I just thought the one insert song that was kind of country sounding didn't quite fit in, but I liked the insert song they did when she was just slaughtering everyone! And yeah Maki is bad ass!

The only complaints I have are a couple of iconic panels not being as powerful in the adaptation, mostly the Toji parallel and "She took it with her". But they're super minor, overall it was absolutely amazing.

I do understand those who didn't like the music, but I think it's a legitimate interpretation. The massacre is meant to be cathartic for Maki, and they're getting what they deserve. It works.

Hmmm the way they did the fight in anime was not in my head while reading the manga...

i imagined it'd be a serious grim tone direction...

animation in itself is great.. and ost choice were alright

The only complaint I have is about some iconic panels that I thought they didn't really nailed but except that, everything was great.

I'm not entirely sure, but wasn't this the fight that in the manga was mostly low quality sketches as Gege had health problems and had to take a few months off? Why would people expect it to have better animation?

Contrary to appearances, the anime didn't change these fights significantly. The episode stuck closely to the manga, but was more "artistic." It's clear that Maki is well-liked there, and she got good animation and overall everything. The only thing I would nitpick is the music in some scene. The rest was basically like in manga

As an anime-only, this episode was a mixed bag for me and that's coming from someone who likes JJK and Maki being a favourite JJK character.

OST choices were out of place, the animation styles felt like they were constantly switching, thus making it kinda hard to follow, the whole Kill Bill reference thing was there for no reason (at least it would have been fine if it was for like a move or like a scene or two, but not almost half of the episode), Mai's death and sacrifice kinda came out of nowhere I guess, the last punch Maki did against Naoya with the random frame and sound freeze from multiple angles was just whack and felt a bit stupid (at first I thought my internet went off or the browser started lagging), overall the pacing felt pretty rushed and I would say it would have been better if it had two episodes instead of one.

The episode wasn't bad at all but I also can't say it was amazing or peak, or whatever. I did enjoy seeing the shitty clan get absolutely annihilated and Maki getting more screentime.

(Not a manga reader but it seems that the majority of them have mostly very positive feedback).

It’s been a while since I’ve read the manga but otherwise I still loved the episode. In my opinion it did everything it needed to do fight choreography amazing, voice acting great, animation quality always top tier. The only thing that bugged me was the overlap of maki and toji but still a top tier episode. I feel like anyone who says this was a underwhelming or mid episode don’t understand how much time and effort go into animation.

In general it’s a great animation, however there’re scenes that could be better animated, like the scene of maki surfing the bath of blood. There are some details like maki full cleaned and dry after being splashed by two giant hands and being fighting around a lake of blood.

dude this ep might be one of the top best ep of the whole show like one of the top ofcourse it was good
but in the end Maki killing her mother was a low blow she was like finding her like a phycopath does this mean she killed dthe kids in the clan aswell since kids can also grow and become heads or start zein again I don't think she did d but she can do that plus won't be too far fetched of a thought if she killed all the women of the clan aswell man she is a monster now she is the new toji in all ways

It's amazing how nobody notices this is 1 to 1 homage to Kill Bill vol. 1, where she fights the crazy 88 gang.

The reflection of the katana to show enemies behind her, moving to black and white, the camera following the guy getting a star to his face (in the movie it was an axe), the plucking of the eye. It was literally the kill bill scene.

Great execution. hope they had copyrights.

I really like certain parts and wasn’t crazy on others, I’m generally not a major fan of the style they used but I think generally it was well animated.

I loved how they animated Naoya’s cursed technique though

I’m personally not a big fan of the more rough and simplistic style of animation they used but It’s not a bad style it’s well animated just not to my tastes.

But it didn’t take away from my enjoyment though I generally liked the episode.

Its not about the animation. Its about the poor storyboarding and directing decisions. The music choice was poor in the middle part. The scene transitions was jarring. Noaya doing all these 0 damage punches, which wasnt in the manga, was just silly. He looked pathetic.

This episode was nothing more than just some spectacleslop

I'm anime only, the episode was definitely great, and the animation was superb. There's no way I will ever complain about the animation in this episode. I wish I had this same animation in Ragna Crimson, which is currently my favorite manga of all time, and what I got in the anime adaptation was a piece of shit IMHO.

So animation-wise, JJK episode 4 was pretty damn great. I do have a criticism, though, the pacing was fast. That whole family massacre business needed to happen in 2 episodes, not 1.

I still rated the episode a 5/5 despite my criticism.

I have a lot of respect for the ambition of this adaptation. That being said, it maybe felt a bit awkwardly paced and scored. But I’ll take that any day in exchange for seeing something so unique and full of life. It was fun!

No particular note tbh, they did it as good as it can be, i love they use kill bill as the cinematography reference along with a more western ost which especially that harmonica song when the hei arrives

Maybe the choice of not having a full frame toji in the flashback and add extra scene to make makis mom redemption make more sense but then again having naoya get clapped on 4 different angles is very nice touch

I loved it. I've been taking a break from anime and came back for JK, and MAPPA has not disappointed. It just seems that people who are disagreeing with the quality of this or that were either readers reconciling with the manga's first impressions or people with too high expectations.

I love how different the opinions here are. I am one of those who didn't like ep 4. the animation was superb of course, but everything else fell flat to me, especially the direction and music.

I know it might sound stupid, but the episode felt over-directed and everything was overdone to the point that the mood felt completely different from my interpretation of the manga. I noticed the same thing in the previous episodes too. I think they should've just stuck with season 2's style, which was excellent.

Regarding this season so far, I'm also disappointed that they seem to be cutting out some minor parts. I was hoping they'd flesh things out more by adding stuff like they did in season 2.

I personally loved it. The studio took a very artistic route that honestly made the fight way better than in the manga. I've also heard many say that her vs the ninjas was a straight up Kill Bill reference which is badass. I also love all the little details like Maki skating on the blood, her catching a kunai with one finger while in the middle of a flip. Lastly, the colors and lighting was great as well and it was cool to see it all change back to normal as soon as she finished off the last ninja. Lasty, I think this episode showcased how powerful the Zenin clan was while still making Maki look broken by no diffing them. Like the one dude straight up was aura farming and pulled a Deku 100% punch 😂.

Overall, I thought it was amazing and while I could see someone not enjoying it, I honestly don't think anyone could objectively say it was poorly animated or directed.

This! Even the ost felt like a direct omage to it!

I agree with both of you a lot I lean a bit more to your partner’s side but I still think the episode was good. However, I didn’t like the music choices. (And I kind of liked Jinichi aura farming as Ranta was struggling for his life)

I liked how they directed the fight with a different approach. But felt some scenes wasn't as impactful....

Well a part of me wish this fight sequences were animated like the old fight scenes of jjk.

I have an issue more so with the speed of the fights. I believe it's more of a directing problem. The whole episode felt rushed and had weird scene hoping moments. The animation was still good, but there was less detail overall like Maki bleed from her head and all of the sudden the next scene there was nothing. Honestly this whole season feels weirdly sped up and or rushed.

Thats what im saying i think its a direction issue more so than anything else. The details were lacking and some scenes just didn't feel right. especially with some of the transitions.
